Thank you, this is great. I will keep it in mind next time I post something about NOYB.

Privacy focused Podcast recommendations?

After the podcast show https://inteltechniques.com/podcast.html stopped putting out episodes, I’ve been on the lookout for other ones. Just stumbled upon The Lockdown (Practical Privacy & Security) and it seems rather good based on the first episode I listened to so thought i’d share it. But am still looking for more as I am...

Tips on distro for gaming Swedish

Hi! I’m getting a new laptop any day now and I plan on going back to Linux after maybe a decade on Windows. What works best for gaming nowadays? Is manjaro good for that? I prefer a distro with a nice name but of course that’s not the central thing. I’ll also do some book keeping, writing et cetera but I don’t think...

The usual suspects are Bazzite, Garuda, Nobara. But you can game on every distro. To give proper advice, some info on your hardware would be needed.

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

One important part for gaming is the graphics card - I cannot comment on that particular one, but I would recommend searching it like “nvidia rtx 4070 + linux” so you can find advice and recommendations. You could also hop over to www.protondb.com, select that card and see what most people are running. Or there is this linux-hardware.org page, where you find lots of info about whats being recommended.

Nvidia used to be problematic with Linux, but I also have an older Nvidia card and haven’t run into any problems (yet). Also there’s lots of new development in that area, I’m sure it’s gonna be ok. Also some distros offer preinstalled Nvidia drivers that you simply select in a driver manager - that for example is the case for Linux Mint.

Keep at it, you got this and there’s so many people and resources online to help. Best of luck!

Just for choosing: distrochooser.de - or put some distros with a tool like Ventoy on a USB stick and do a live install to test it on the actual system. The many options are a great thing, but of course not easy to get into at first. So I’d try not to overthink it, distrohopping is a hobby for some of us :D

Distributions intended for hardware diagnosis and other related utilities

Within the GNU/Linux ecosystem there are all kinds of tools to diagnose the system, or rather, to check the state of the hardware, but there are few distributions specifically designed to perform this task, or at least that I know of, because the only distribution I know that is intended to diagnose the computer, (Or at...

Have a good transition and if you stick with Mint, I’d recommend the official forums for any questions: forums.linuxmint.com/index.php

I just finished setting up Linux Mint for an old buddy of mine on his old dog of a laptop, rendering it useful once again! (i.imgur.com)

Edit 2: to everyone suggesting an SDD: i know. Look, if this guy had enough $$$ for an SSD, he could buy a used lappy less than half the age of this one that has an ssd and 2-3x the memory....

I’m sure it’s fun, really, but having a rootkit in a PVE game and that PSN requirement on top, that all seems fishy. I know Sony backed off for now, but like you said, it’s a live service and they might change it again. I still hope players can enjoy it and have a great time.

This really caught my eye, but does it make sense for an older PC?

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

I had issues with Onlyoffice taking ages to load documents with lots of pages while Libreoffice did it instantly as expected. So back to Libreoffice for me.

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

OpenOffice and OnlyOffice are two different things. We were talking about the latter.

If you want an elaborated answer you will have to share the hardware you want to install it on.

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

Sorry for not answering your question, just wanted to say, I have a similar HP Laptop bought under similar circumstances and it IS Linux unfriendly (you cannot even update the BIOS without Windows). But Linux Mint handles it very well. It was the first distro that got the WiFi working without headaches and it also handles the AMD card well.

I hope someone can answer your actual question and you get something you’re happy with.

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh my, you are really patient for putting up with all this for such a long time. Yes, I have slightly different components, not the exact same ones, but it was also a mess to get it to work properly.

Sounds promising, please keep us posted and good luck!

Please recommend me some blogs about Linux or FOSS or similar that you follow through RSS.

Hi. I have a category Little Tech Blogs in my rss reader where I put those cool niche blogs mostly about Linux, FOSS, programming, etc… Many of them I found by articles linked in this community, so I was wondering if you guys know about more blogs like that. By little I mean it’s run by one person or a small group of people,...

Image viewer that remembers last visited image (Linux)

I’m looking for a FOSS image viewer on Linux that remembers the last visited image or lets me set a bookmark of some sort. Pix for example has the preference “Go to last visited location” - but that is just the folder, not the image itself. But I have folders with lots and lots of images that I work through day by day and...

Great and very informative read, also good advice for people who want to contribute but aren’t able to write code.

The blog post is about KDE of course, but I think the idea isn’t limited to that project. There was this post on Lemmy not so long ago where people were discussing other ways of contributing or how people help with open source projects. And there were quite a few who said they can’t code but would like to help with other things (apart from donating money).

Any news on Cinnamon DE?

With all the news surrounding KDE Plasma 6, I’m wondering if there has been any interesting news about the Cinnamon DE. This is my preferred DE and what I’m currently using on Arch. Last we heard, Cinnamon moved to Version 6 on Linux Mint, and that version comes with an experimental Wayland setup. Since then, I haven’t...

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

In January I read this post on the Linux Mint forums saying: “Wayland isn’t expected to replace Xorg as default any time soon, not in 21.3, not in 22.x, but we want to be ready all the same.”

A blog post in January stated that Linux Mint 22’s “Cinnamon edition will include a new Nemo Actions Organizer”. But that’s all I know sadly.

[Rant] A few days ago, I asked if Mint would run okay on a Lenovo T460 (I appreciate all the advice). I got it working, but the installation was a big pain and I totally blame Lenovo.

I got the T460 refurbished and I really didn’t want to run Windows 10 on it. I last used Linux for any real length of time a good 20 years ago, so I’m pretty inexperienced with it at this point and I had to figure out how to install it myself....

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

Wow what a ride. Congrats on making it work, I’m not sure if I wouldn’t have given up at some point. Great job!

About kissing M$'s ass, don’t get me started on updating the BIOS on a HP Laptop, they require you to do that in Windows cause it’s the only way to get their downloader to run. So it’s not only Lenovo’s Laptops that don’t play nice with Linux.

Terraria. It has RPG elements and is simply fantastic. Often available at a discount on Steam which I only recommend due to the extensive content available via the Workshop.

Not familiar with that device, but terraria.wiki.gg/wiki/Terraria_Wiki has all the available versions listed.

Linux for desktop market share surpasses 4% for the first time, says Statcounter (www.neowin.net)

Statcounter, a website that tracks the market share of web browsers, operating systems, and search engines, is reporting that Linux on the desktop has over 4% market share for the very first time (Statcounter records ChromeOS as a separate operating system despite being based on Linux). Statcounter doesn’t provide any...

People often forget that they also often have to tinker with making games work in Windows, because they are more familiar with the OS and get it done faster. Also I think you’d be surprised how many games just run without any tinkering at all nowadays. But then there are some that don’t run at all, mostly due to invasive rootkit ‘anti-cheats’. That’s no real loss for me, I wouldn’t install something like that on a Windows machine either.

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

Cool question! Just dropping !emulation here in case some aren’t aware of that community.

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

I’m surprised about the cast. I like most of them in other films, but in this trailer, I can’t really explain, but it feels off.

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

Interesting. In the trailer, I don’t mind Jack Black (not sure if he is a good pick though), but I sure miss the complete insanity from Tina. That’s what made her character so crazy and fun for me (yes, that sounds weird, even for myself).

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

Well, Tannis too. But they apparently don’t follow the games timeline, otherwise Mordecai and Brick would be there instead of Tiny Tina and Krieg.

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

Well said, agree about Kevin Hart, I pictured Roland differently. I had this short flash where I pictured Roland as Arnold Schwarzenegger how he looked in Predator and that made me laugh. Predator was no comical film of course, but I could easily see Arnold do the Roland thing and I would find that amusing.

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes, that whiny child part bugged me a lot. It doesn’t fit Tina at all.

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

No I loved it, interesting read.

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh I completely forgot about RedHat! Yes, that was my first one too. Then Ubuntu was kinda the thing to go to and it worked for a good while until it just didn’t work for me anymore.

Today I’m on Mint because it was the first distro I tried that was able to get the Wifi working on my super old/bad HP Laptop. I started to like it and then also moved to Mint on my desktop. Running it for a year now and since my PC isn’t the youngest anymore, I doubt I will switch distro again anytime soon.

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

I can’t code either but I’m supporting new users in selected forums on a daily basis and I volunteer at our local linux event once a year.

@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

Great write-up, thank you OP!

I’d like to suggest an addition: I often get the question: but will distro XY run on my device? Then I suggest to boot from an USB stick and try everything in a live session without installing anything. (And if people are just curious how it will look and feel, I recommend distrosea.com)

Also, I miss the mention of Cinnamon. Mint is very popular as you have already said and the “flagship” version comes with Cinnamon.

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

Sure, I just meant to avoid confusion if someone follows the suggestion to simply try Mint and then goes to “choose your DE” but then there is no Gnome or KDE for Mint to download.

Interesting to hear the difference to Fedora’s Cinnamon though, since I’ve never tried that.

I really loved Subnautica, didn’t like Below Zero but am still playing Subnautica from time to time. I can’t even imagine how a game with such a great setting and story can become a gaas. I can get behind co-op, but isn’t the ultimate goal in that game to get back home?

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

Oh thank you for clarifying that!

Yes I agree. Even the soundtrack wasn’t good anymore and don’t get me started about the ending :)

Kory,
@Kory@lemmy.ml avatar

Thanks for the link, I just came here to post it haha. I’m glad they are not intending to make it a GaaS, might give it a try after all.

Absolutely agree, also with the spoiler comment :D
