'LLM-free' is the new '100% organic' - Creators Are Fighting AI Anxiety With an ‘LLM-Free’ Movement (www.theatlantic.com)

As soon as Apple announced its plans to inject generative AI into the iPhone, it was as good as official: The technology is now all but unavoidable. Large language models will soon lurk on most of the world’s smartphones, generating images and text in messaging and email apps. AI has already colonized web search, appearing in...

Luddites were not idiots, they were people who understood the only use of tech at their time was to fuck them. Like this complete garbage shit is going to be used to fuck people. Nobody is opposed to having tools, we just don’t like Musk fanboys blowing spit bubbles while trying to get peepee hard

I got Photoprism, it works much better than immich in that it works and doesn’t break. Satisfied my needs, although you need a bunch of android apps. Still, it works and doesn’t give me any lip

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

That’s true, I’m not a fan of the way they handle the paid parts of the app, the user creation and administration is as basic as it gets - and doing it through docker shell or whatever is a huge pain in the ass. But most of the other stuff is sort of ok, I pay for the thing but I rarely if ever use the map. Main thing is it just doesn’t crash (knock on wood)

They were doing ok. But the github thing and the 11 thing and the edging and now this - I can’t wait to buy a machine that can run windows virtualised. I need it for my work apps, but this virt thing has been a dream of mine for a long time. Compartmentalization

Software as ASSSS

MayonnaiseArch,

Bought github, doing shitty ai crap with it etc, forcing logins

What non-FOSS software have you been unable to quit?

For me, Google video search, Google books (Internet Archive is good, but doesn’t always have the same stuff), Adobe InDesign (but in the process of learning LaTeX), and Typewise. As for the Google stuff, I liked Whoogle a lot, but almost all their instances seem to have been blocked or shut down. Also, apologies if this is...

There is also ondsel, which is basically freecad with some polish maybe. It looks the same to me. But one day when they solve the topology renaming thing and when they have an interface that’s not openly hostile I’d love to try it

MayonnaiseArch,

Hey I can pay you in turnips, it’s better than having a normal money operation. Like, it doesn’t matter that gumroad is turning to crap, we have turnips. People mock my turnips

I think in my part of europe cable is the only realistic solution, every home cellular thing has a download limit. All of the cable offerings here are flat

MayonnaiseArch,

A serious question - when will nvidia stop selling their products and start asking for rent? Like 50 bucks a month is a 4070, your hardware can be a 4090 but thats a 100 a month. I give it a year

Why are keyboards getting smaller?

I’m not a true mechanical keyboard enthusiast. I mean I like a good keyboard for typing code, so I rolled with model-Ms in the 80s and 90s, then some expensive Cherry keyboard I only recently retired because it was utterly spent (and it was PS/2), and now I happily use a Wooting Two HE....

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

A mystery for me, the numpad is essential and at least 60 percent of the nav cluster is in constant use. And I prefer the full keyboard look

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, that seems to be the case

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

I wanted to try this but all keyboards I use have a numpad. The only thing that worried me was getting used to something you can’t have on every pc

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

The layer thing is really impressive, I’d actually love to have it on my normal huge keyboard. But I need the numpad available on the first layer, using a mouse is a must in my work

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

Well damn that actually sounds good. How much time did it take you to get used to it?

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

That’s always my trigger, fucking ‘sideloading’. Jesus christ it’s installing shit. Installing. There was never a need for such a pissy horrible concept in the firstplace, a bootlicking special if there ever was one

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

Dude you don’t get to decide what I’m angry about. The term is extremely inaccurate, you don’t sideload shit on your computer, right? It’s yours. I don’t sideload shelves, I put them on my wall. So I’d say the offensive part is that somebody who gets my money gets to decide if I own something.

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

It’s not possible. I need software that runs only on windows, so as much as I’d like to I can never switch. The only thing I can do is maybe do a vm passthrough thing - except I don’t want to spend a couple of grand on a new pc. People have jobs, real jobs, we have to work instead of fucking around distro hopping. A whole bunch of people could possibly switch to linux, but it’s still such a major pain in the ass that nobody will do it unless they are forced into it. Expect hacked win 11 installs

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

I have no idea what you’re about here

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

I’m called the vast majority. I can’t use my software on wine because it’s not supported by my vendors. It’s nice that you use things, but try working in architecture, civil engineering and construction and let me know how that works for you.

Let me be even more condescending - I use things I need to do my work. I don’t jerk off to linux or windows. If there was an option to move to mac I would do it. That’s using a thing like normal person, you use thing get money

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

Oh I don’t “need” it at all, like I don’t “need” my job, electricity or running water. Autodesk shit, some other things. Imagine - it doesn’t work on anything except windows. And it’s like that for 70 or 80 percent of my colleagues (there are things for apple). And let me tell you, Autodesk barely want to make thigs work on windows, they hate their customers for real

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

Ai has literally nothing to with that. We can do housing this second if we wanted to do it

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

This is complete and utter bullshit. We have enough of everything to start solving housing this second. Workers aren’t a problem, locations aren’t a problem. We lack the political will to do it, read: we don’t want to do it. Having “AI” tell you why you don’t want to do it is just wasteful

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

So what’s ai got to to with it? Nothing?

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

For some reason I always felt they were not trustworthy, like years and years. This doesn’t come as a surprise

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

Having an option to choose s3 inconveniences most humans? Wtf? And the clearly broken option is good? Are we on reddit?

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

Such a serious company and grownups. No wonder all the nft dudes are so into ‘ai’

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

I’m sure there are use cases, it’s just that there’s much too much hullabaloo about it all. Some people can get something out of it, they’ll fire their workers, that’s about it. But I can’t use it for shit because I want to control what’s being done, don’t do text processing at all. But I smell the crypto dudes that are clinging to the whole thing, a dripping mess of turds wanking off to fanciful stories about ai. It’s language models all the way down

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

The second that one gpu can do the thing where your system is linux but you sandbox a windows vm with work software… I will switch that exact second.

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

He warns? Does he now? I know that bashing journalists is a rightwing ting, but these dudes are really complicit in all of this shit. How the hell do you come up with that kind of headline? He warns

Dunkey became a bit much some time before his gaming company thing. I’m not sure what it is, but something changed and I just couldn’t watch his stuff again.

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

Same for me. I got some plugins too, people say they’re a must, but they have their own tutorials almost. But one day I’ll try it

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

But he’s a very stupid and very malicious man, how do we know?

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

Well the dlss 3.5 was a nice lie, you can’t run the ray reconstruction thing on older hardware. Otherwise it runs the same I guess, no time to check

Gaming often fetishises the new but many great things exist in the past, so let's strap into our time machines and talk about our favourite games released before say 2010?

Just as with books, movies, plays etc the past holds a treasure trove of amazing experiences. Unless you have a lot more free time than I do it’s unlikely you’ve played anywhere near the majority of the classics. Let’s get out those pink sunnies and compare notes on some of our favourite releases....

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

I have that edition and can’t for the life of me get my xbox controller to work with it. I swear I’ve tried ALL of the solutions people give and just gave up in the end.

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

I’ll try that, never heard about it! Steam input is an option in steam on windows, I guess it’s the same deal? Thanks for the xpadder thing, it will come in handy for sure.

Should I play Dark Souls original or Remaster?

I already own the original, but back when I got it I was unable to play due to the poor control schemes since I am disabled. Now I own an Xbox Adaptive Controller that I used to play through Elden Ring pretty well. I'd love to go back and play some of the earlier games....

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

I think the original has horrible controller support, but I haven't tried it in a long while. Just be aware of possible issues

MayonnaiseArch,
@MayonnaiseArch@beehaw.org avatar

On the other hand if it's 500 poor people fuck'em
