MysticKetchup,

Boy this legally distinct gothic horror themed game that shares nothing in common with a popular Sony franchise sure looks like a fun time

What are some eras of gaming that you've stopped feeling nostalgic for? (kbin.social)

As I've gotten older as a player, I have found myself dropping some eras of gaming that I used to be nostalgic for. One of them is the 8-bit era, the NES days. I have played some of the best that system had to offer and I will never say that system didn't have any good games....

MysticKetchup,

Not so much as stopped feeling nostalgic for, but realizing that there weren’t as many great games available as I thought that haven’t had better successors or remakes. And for Nintendo consoles, non-Nintendo games that stand the test of time are difficult to find outside of a few franchises that usually have more modern versions on Switch.

We are just spoiled for choice these days when it comes to games, especially with indie games. And indies these days often have better UX than most mainstream games back then.

MysticKetchup,

Aside from the fact that this is IGN, this amount of consolidation is really bad for the industry

MysticKetchup,

I mean, StarCraft was mentioned in the article. He just doesn’t think RTS is big enough for AAA dev companies when they’re all trying to sell tens of millions of games

That’s not to say RTSes can never be any kind of hit: StarCraft 2 sold many millions of copies, Bruno noted, and Crate Entertainment only needs to sell a million to make “an OK return,” he said. The series has also been an esports phenomenon. But for a company like Blizzard, he doesn’t think that’s enough anymore, which is why the developer stopped making new RTSes, or at least seems to have for now.

MysticKetchup,

It’s not pixel art, but does Muramasa: The Demon Blade count?

Not sure if it’s RPG-y enough, but Katana Zero does sort of match that kind of style

MysticKetchup,

Oh I see, so more horizontal movement style games? Maybe Moon Hunters?

I feel like a lot of stuff like that is probably going to fall into the roguelike category. But as a fan of RPGs roguelikes always bug me because I need progression. Soulslikes such as Hunt the Night or Duel Corp might be better, but based on your description that’s probably too much on the action side and not enough on the rpg side

MysticKetchup,

Want to feel older? Since the N64, we’ve had the GameCube, Wii, Wii U and Switch. The latter of which has been out for 7 years already and is probably going to be replaced soon.

MysticKetchup,

Worse, since if you tip through the game you’re almost certainly just giving that money to the execs

MysticKetchup,

Yeah sorry, I went with the auto generated title but probably should have done some editing on it for clarity. I think the game looks neat but it does feel like the site was trying to hit as many SEO words as possible

MysticKetchup,

Dang those are pretty. It’s kinda sad how little we get big, expansive pixel art environments these days

MysticKetchup,

Shame they never released VII, VIII and IX for the DS. At the very least, the 3DS would have been able to handle all the way up to the PS2 games but SE just didn’t seem interested in remakes on Nintendo consoles anymore for whatever reason.

MysticKetchup,

Sounds really cool, though still very light on details. I also hope it’s playable solo since it feels so hard to get a group of 4 people together as a working adult

MysticKetchup,

Haha yeah, I’m just getting to a point where I’m old and don’t want to make new accounts for things

MysticKetchup,

You think a corporation would do that? Just go in front of the FTC and lie?

MysticKetchup,

It’s disappointing how often we hear very little of the designers and programmers behind classic games. You’d think more would have even a small cult following online, it’s nice to see what the people who created some of your favorites things are up to years later

MysticKetchup,

That’s fair, I can see game devs being the kind of people who don’t like attention

MysticKetchup,

What was the last new RTS? I wouldn’t be surprised that a fanbase that trends very hardcore is extremely hungry for a new game in the genre from experienced devs

MysticKetchup,

BOTW ruined Zelda for people like me who enjoyed the dungeons, unique items and narrative progression of older games even if it was a great game for open world fans. Pokemon is even further removed from that action-survival gameplay so it’s not hard to see why people would want new games to be similar even if the current formula is stale.

MysticKetchup,

I think Shin Megami Tensei actually solves this with their capturing system, which is really more of a negotiating system. At any time during a battle, you can talk to an enemy demon and ask them to join you. They may request money, items, health/MP or require you to answer questions correctly in order to join you. It’s neat since it has some risk/reward since you can keep plying them with more resources or you can say they’ve gotten enough and push them to join.

MysticKetchup,

Never underestimate how much people want to see a trainwreck up close. Of course, pirating is free, I doubt many people want to pay money for a trainwreck, so not sure if Denuvo is really going to save them from losing actual sales

Stardew Valley: 1.6 ended up being a little larger in scope than originally planned. I'm done adding major new content to it now, though, and it's in a bug-fixing and polishing phase until it's ready. (twitter.com)

Nitter link: twiiit.com/ConcernedApe/…/1750962107682857258 (Now fixed!) Might have to use this link multiple times to find a instance that isn’t rate limited or check the wiki and change the url manually.

MysticKetchup,

This is one of those games I have in my backlog but I’m scared to start it without being prepared to lose endless hours in it

MysticKetchup,

It’s very much not just “same animals” but parts of Pals looking like they were traced or at least copied visually from existing Pokemon, as well many Pals directly copying color schemes from similar Pokemon.

MysticKetchup,

To be fair, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with using Pokemon as inspiration, and even when not the fact that Pokemon is so ubiquitous means that comparisons will be drawn regardless. But there’s definitely more than a few Pals that seem to cross from inspiration to a suspicious amount of copying, and it’s more about wanting to support artistic integrity than it is about Pokemon specifically.

MysticKetchup,

The important bit:

At 4pm PDT on April 8, 2024, online play and other functionality that uses online communication will end for Nintendo 3DS* and Wii U software. This also includes online co-operative play, internet rankings, and data distribution.

MysticKetchup,

I doubt they can unless Palworld literally stole models from Pokemon. While some of the designs are pretty blatantly copied, if they can’t prove the devs copied directly from them there’s not much of a case

Palworld Becomes the 7th Game Ever to Reach 1 Million Concurrent Players on Steam (www.githyp.com)

“Palworld is now one of only seven games that have seen over 1 million concurrent players on Steam – the others include: PUBG (3.2 mil), Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (1.8 mil), Counter-Strike 2 (1.4 mil), Lost Ark (1.3 mil), Dota 2 (1.2 mil), and Cyberpunk 2077 (1 mil).”

MysticKetchup,

Off the top of my head we’ve had Digimon, Monster Hunter: Stories, Yo-Kai Watch, Dragon Quest Monsters, Cassette Beasts, TemTem, Ooblets and Monster Crown. The only one that really hit it pretty big was TemTem and it was nowhere near the success of this.

MysticKetchup,

Are we looking at the same picture? It’s not that it’s a grin on the cat, it’s that it looks nearly 1-1 traced from Pokemon

MysticKetchup,

Most survival games have tired me out at this point but the vibes of this and the dedication to the car mechanics might pull me back in. Probably better to wait and see if they improve the UI though

MysticKetchup,

Data is surprisingly cheap. It’s more than likely just reinvesting any profits into growth to boost stock price/investment. A lot of companies are hitting the point where growth is leveling off, so they’ve switched to cutting costs

MysticKetchup,

First and foremost, This is kind of a rant. I do not like horror games. I have never played any ‘strictly horror’ ones before. And yes I get scared easily.

Lethal Company is a horror game. Sure people find a lot of funny moments in it, but it’s still mainly just a horror game. If you don’t like the horror bits, the rest is just going to be boring for you. Don’t feel like you have to force yourself to like it just because everyone else does

MysticKetchup,

Oh neat, had no idea they were remaking Trace Memory, and that it had a sequel that never released outside of Japan.

MysticKetchup,

Ah, so the US is just the outlier here. Shame that the sequel didn’t live up to the first game. There were so many fun puzzles that made you feel clever when you figured them out

MysticKetchup,

As someone who loves Jurassic Park and really, really wants a game like this, really hoping that the devs can pull this off but licensed games are very hit or miss

MysticKetchup,

How do you feel about JRPGs? The “Tales of…” series is on Steam and combat in them is real-time (though it doesn’t take place on the world map).

MysticKetchup,

Sayonara Wild Hearts, not surprising since the entire game is full of beautiful music

youtu.be/PULwDISWun8

MysticKetchup,

Ah, I recognize the style but didn’t realize that it was specific to one computer. It’s cool to see various niche traced back to where they came from, over 20 years later and one PC is still having ripple effects on art today

MysticKetchup,

I wonder if that counts merchandising or spinoff game revenue, which is probably more than Minecraft itself at this point

MysticKetchup,

Well they offer subscriptions for Realms, which is essentially just private server hosting (likely for confused parents) and the Bedrock edition has microtransactions. But Java edition is probably the best $20 I’ve ever spent in gaming

MysticKetchup,

Lol sorry, I did not mean it in a judgy way. I just figure most parents don’t know or care enough about Minecraft to host a server themselves but I’d probably do the same thing in their shoes

MysticKetchup,

It’s survivorship bias. You’re looking at the success of Tarkov but you don’t hear about all the games that failed because they weren’t on Steam.

MysticKetchup,

People aren’t being replaced by AI because the AI is as good or better than them, people are being replaced by AI because the AI is massively cheaper than them.

We’re going to end up with shittier products so more profit can end up in shareholders’ pockets

MysticKetchup,

My guess is they’re from a mobile gacha game where they realized they needed to sell waifus

MysticKetchup,

It used to be that if you wanted an open world game you had a handful of options, and for RPGs Fallout and Elder Scrolls were really the only options. Nowadays we have more open world games than you can shake a stick at. Bethesda doesn’t seem to realize that the rest of the industry has caught up with and passed them in a lot of ways

MysticKetchup,

It’s pretty hard to make a “small scope” 3D open world city game with driving and shooting elements. The sheer amount of work is more than the vast majority of indie devs can achieve. There’s a reason most of them go with procgen wilderness survival games. The closest I’ve seen is something like Cloudpunk but that has a fraction of the gameplay elements that makes GTA popular

MysticKetchup,

Pretty much, is anyone from their golden age still even at the studio? Makes sense why they need to rely on their past hits if they can’t make any new ones
