Whenever AI is mentioned lots of people in the Linux space immediately react negatively. Creators like TheLinuxExperiment on YouTube always feel the need to add a disclaimer that “some people think AI is problematic” or something along those lines if an AI topic is discussed. I get that AI has many problems but at the same...
I work in a medical startup and we provide an AI powered service for semi automatic target detection for neurosurgery specifically for Parkinson’s and essential tremor. Many patients have benefitted from it so far with excellent results and the fact that it allows surgeons to perform the entire surgery under general anesthesia makes it much less traumatic and available to many more patients.
It’s okay to reconcile that AI is both an amazing tool with a lot of great benefits in some areas AND a lot of assholish data theft and overhyped, unhelpful bloat shoved down our throats in others.
Hey, I wanna know your preferred laptops, used is better and to run Linux on it. Something with at least 16gb and 512 SSD is good. Budget range. Thank you!
I did have a couple of issues with a model with an nvidia video card, but the tuxedo tech I got in contact with took great care to troubleshoot the issue with me and report the issue up to the Dev team that works with nvidia. So compatibility may not be 100% but the service is great. Now I got no more issues with it.
Mint is solid. I hope you have a great time on it!
I’ll also add that sometimes people project a lot and have a hard time understanding that recommending advanced stuff to beginners is counterproductive more often than not, no matter how much they like said stuff. It’s frustrating. It’s important to meet people where they are and take their needs and goals into account.
I think things got lost in translation here. We’re not talking about explicit/pornographic content here. There are other tags that cover that. This, however, indicates sexual orientation in general which covers any display of affection that characterizes same gender couples, including kissing, holding hands or be explicitly in a relationship, which is no less appropriate for kids than straight smooching.
I’m a long time Windows user who has experience with WSL. Last year, I needed a laptop for university, and out of laziness, opted for a Macbook since, although they’re expensive as hell, are reasonably reliable....
The website linuxjourney.com is often recommended to new Linux users, for good reasons. Since you’re already experienced in CS and WSL you’ll find a lot of things you already know, but there’s always things to learn for everyone in there. Cheers! ^^
I bought a laptop yesterday, it came pre-installed with Windows 11. I hate win 11 so I switched it down to Windows 10, but then started considering using Linux for total control over the laptop, but here’s the thing: I keep seeing memes about how complicated or fucky wucky Linux is to install and run. I’ve had growing pains for KDE on Wayland in the past but it’s been chill in recent times too, I can’t remember having any issue related to that for a long time
Thanks for the detailed reply! Now that I think about it I do vaguely remember a desktop with GNOME shell featured and a bar at the bottom.
Man, the early days of GNOME 3 were awkward. I remember desperately trying stuff out now that GNOME 2 was phased out and ending up making my own de over openbox in the end. What a frustrating era.

Im on EndeavourOS like a lot of other folks here, which is basically Arch with an awesome installer, a handful of convenient extra tools, a sensible default confuguration and a fancy theme. It’s been awesome so far, hell I’ve just been able to install and run an EA game from steam with minimal fuss yesterday, just the help of lutris to install EA Origin to authenticate. Shit just works.
That being said, Arch can occasionally blow up at your face for no fault of your own and it’s a very different environment from fedora (love fedora btw), so there’s a bit of a learning curve that you’re gonna have to accept to climb if you want to maintain your system.
Wow, thank you so much for the very thorough answer! I’ve been interested in both and having the point of view of someone who has experienced both is extremely useful. I appreciate it a lot.
So I’ve tried them both, since you re-inspired me to do so the other day, and I have to say I’m very impressed with Zellij so far. I understand it’s still an ongoing project that will need a lot of polish, but so far feels like it has a philosophy that I can actually meaningfully integrate in my workflow, especially custom layouts. I still have a lot to learn about it to have areally good idea fo how that would work out though, but I can already see myself usign it in projects I have in mind and the documentation is really thorough. ^^
Byobu, on the other hand, oof. That was not a welcoming experience. I had to read the man pages to get a decent idea about how it works in general, because the pretentious video tutorial on their website was a disaster. None of the shortcuts I tried from what they were showing did what they were supposed to do. Configuration issue, most likely, but I’m not going to dive head first into config files so I can try it out properly. That was very, very weird.
Thanks again for your insight and motivating me to give them a go!
That tracks, I also happen to be on Konsole and Plasma 6! That explains things!
About the video, it’s a wordless demonstration with minimal in-terminal narration and … Mozart as the soundtrack for some reason? The whole thing along with the manpages-only doc did give me newbie-hostile, elitist vibes which were a stark contrast with zellij’s “look at all the cool things I can do!”, friendly approach.
Don’t get me wrong, I do appreciate well written manpages, goodness knows they’re often written as an afterthought, but zellij’s documentation is just amazing at getting you started and understand the philosophy with a super hands-on approach. Honestly, kudos to them.

Foxit still provides a free version that’s linux compatible. Its been a lifesaver at work to do document signing without messing everything up. It may take a little tweaking to run, but it’s worth a try for forms.
Any and all help would be so greatly appreciated. I’ve been battling with my laptop to be able to dual-boot Ubuntu Cinnamon and Windows 10 for about four days now. You might not want to trust chatgpt with anything where accuracy and specificity are both essential to not brick a machine or lose data though. Especially since you can’t check the sources it used. It did a decent job at getting the general workflow right, but even that’s not a given. :/
