In high school the class that graduated before me took a class picture, and all the jocks lined up in the front with their uniforms on. Then, when they took the “crazy” picture they pulled off their uniforms and had “DEEZ NUTZ” written on their shirts. They lied and said it was an inside joke, and when the faculty got all the pictures they realized what they did. So they had the entire yearbook committee draw Zorro capes and masks on them, and attempt to change the shirts to say “ZORRO” for some reason.

This was in 1999.

Democratic strategists, liberal pundits are making a living off doubting President Joe Biden’s viability in the 2024 presidential election. Why?

Because they need it to be a horse race to get keep people’s attention. They write those things because they get clicks and views and comments.

Notice how they’re not writing about how our system is failing everyone by being this way. That’s because they like the system this way because it keeps them on top.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

There are a lot of reasons things are the way they are - the fucked up way we elect a president, the fucked up way we count the votes, the fucked up way we apportion representatives - but the bottom line is that our government is broken and we’re not going to get actual representation out of it.

So unless progressives are going to move the red states en masse to actually change things, we need to get used to being an unrepresented minority, ruled by a different minority that has more land.

There is literally only one sane choice on the ballot this year.

Which is the real problem, has been a problem since before I could vote, and is a problem that cannot be fixed.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

tl;dr - The system is broken but we still have to pretend it isn’t because otherwise its brokenness will allow terrible things to happen and the people who do those things will face no repercussions.

The neat part is that, for me, voting is also a vote for the candidate I don’t like.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

The fact that this is even on the table is why I’m upset. A sane government would not let that sort of thing happen. But we have a majority of the Supreme Court nominated by two presidents who lost the popular vote because a bunch of slave owners over 200 years ago were butthurt at the idea that the popular vote for president wouldn’t go their way.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Do you want to keep the Republic, or not?

I don’t want the republic but I don’t want fascism either

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Exactly. Our government is like we took an 18th century sailing ship, bolted on a steam engine, piled it full of people, and then strapped on some wings so it could fly to the moon.

The structure of our government is so anachronistic I don’t know why people are upset it’s working so horribly.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

There are instructions, but those instructions were also modified at the behest of slave owners who wanted an outsized influence. So we can’t update it without risking something even worse.

What should have been added was the requirement that it be updated every 20 years.

Yes.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

The Patriot Act* didn’t exist before 9/11. Your argument is invalid.

Also, the NSA can get the FBI to get a warrant for the person in the US. We already have mechanisms for monitoring communications in the US.

  • It’s actually called the USA PATRIOT Act, which is an acronym for “Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism.” I prefer the acronym U SAP AT RIOT/

The idea that someone should just “learn to code” shows a huge lack of understanding of what “learning to code” entails. It also doesn’t help that they’ll need to earn a living while they’re learning to code, and that they’ll have to move from a dying town to find a job where they can code.

They weren’t offended by the idea of learning to code. They were offended by the dismissive nature of the major life change that switching careers and moving to a different state entails.

And, as someone who learned how to code, I’m offended by the dismissive nature of the technology industry as just “learn to code.”

Trump allies launch secretive scheme to divide Biden support: report (www.msn.com)

Anybody who thinks the US will abandon Israel is ignorant of history, too. As is anybody who thinks they can vote for a president and not get blood on their hands.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

basically drag Biden to a better policy position.

I keep hearing words like “fight” and “drag” and “push” as to what we do to stop this, but they don’t mean actually fighting or dragging or pushing, just being annoying in ways that are easily dismissed.

I’ve gotten enough “fuck you I do what I want” letters from my reps and senators about things that I’ve given up “pushing” them in that way.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

The other part is that online lefties like us are a minority. If Biden does move left he risks losing the election to the majority of Americans who support Israel unconditionally. So nobody’s going to end up happy and he loses the election anyway.

He’s from a generation that believes “the system works”, because its worked well for him/ them.

This is a great insight that people who keep saying “we just need to push him after the election” don’t seem to get. Yes, I’m sure that in the past writing letters to Congress might have done something more than waste paper. But the system is so broken now that people don’t believe them and see the only way to get a message across that this is unacceptable is to not vote.

There’s too many moving parts in the government for me to think they’ll actually get something done. Maybe one district in some state flips red and suddenly there’s a Republican majority and nothing happens no matter how hard I press the button in my district.

Low expectations are key to not being disappointed.
