Okay, but this should also apply to the military and police. (Redundant, I know.) We don’t want someone stealing rifles and selling them to cartels, right?

Name a more iconic duo than American politicians and taking protest songs out of context.

I guess if our populace has become this damn stupid, then democracy can’t work here anymore.

Majority rule don’t work in mental institutions

Corporate real estate is on a 'cliff edge' as firms race to rethink communal spaces (www.bbc.com)

As more employees work from home in the hybrid-work era, many companies are finding they need smaller offices. Compared to pre-pandemic floorplans designed to house as many workers as possible, more businesses are looking towards more compact but higher-quality spaces for the future....

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,

I would love to see some hard data on this, but I wonder how much of the increase in corporate purchases of homes is driven by the need to prop up their flagging real estate investments.

The last time this happened it was Japanese cars, and the US auto industry failed and got bailed out. I expect that to happen again with Chinese EVs.

The ability to make cars involves a lot of skills that can have military applications. There’s a reason car factories were converted to build basically everything in WWII, and the US won’t give up that ability for national security reasons. So our auto industry can’t fail, and will be propped up by the government.

If the stakes really as high as they claim, then it would be horrible for Biden to accept the results of the election if he lost.

The reason they are so fucking old is for the exact reason you’d expect: voter participation of those 65+ is about 3x of those 18-29.

That’s not entirely true. Committee membership and chairmanship is determined by seniority, so the longer someone stays in office the more political power they have.

Therefore it behooves both sides to keep people in office as long as possible, even if that person has one foot in the grave.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Of course. I’m just pointing out that there’s reasons they keep the same people in office for a long time outside of old people voting more frequently.

The most depressing thing I’ve seen related to this topic. A small team that worked incredibly hard were lucky enough to achieve the impossible, and now they watch without any control as it is taken from them, for no other reason than greed.

KSP’s original team must feel the same way

I don’t think Harris would be any better. And unless Bernie is made president pro tempore I don’t see anyone in the entire line of succession that would be any better on this issue. The fact that they released a game with wobbly rockets and then charged $50 for it shows they didn’t know what the hell they were doing. It should have been free for early access with a simple way to report bugs. I’m not gonna pay that much to do QA work for them.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Our voting method is just one of the many myriad problems with how we elect government officials. Even if that was fixed we’d still be ruled by low-population states, and the president can be elected with 20% of the vote.

This article, for once, actually listens to real people and understands the problem:

Therein lies a disconnect between most economic indicators that economists consider — things like GDP, the unemployment rate, job growth and inflation — which are all looking up, and how voters feel. When voters measure economic well-being, they’re much more likely to use more personal metrics, such as how easily their family can meet their basic needs.

Now imagine if cannabis seeds were floating through the air all the time, and also used to produce a staple food, and you’ll see how alcohol is even harder to regulate.
