UprisingVoltage,

Electric cars do not address any of the main issues cars bring to our society, which are:

  • Pollution – Cars are responsible for a significant amount of global and local pollution (microplastic waste, brake dust, embodiment emissions, tailpipe emissions, and noise pollution). Electric cars eliminate tailpipe emissions, but the other pollution-related problems largely remain.
  • Infrastructure (Costs. An Unsustainable Pattern of Development) – Cars create an unwanted economic burden on their communities. The infrastructure for cars is expensive to maintain and the maintenance burden for local communities is expected to increase with the adoption of more electric and (someday) fully self-driving cars. This is partly due to the increased weight of the vehicles and also the increased traffic of autonomous vehicles.
  • Infrastructure (Land Usage & Induced Demand) – Cities allocate a vast amount of space to cars. This is space that could be used more effectively for other things such as parks, schools, businesses, homes, and so on. We miss out on these things and are forced to pile on additional sprawl when we build vast parking lots and widen roads and highways. This creates part of what is called induced demand. This effect means that the more capacity for cars we add, the more cars we’ll get, and then the more capacity we’ll need to add.
  • Independence and Community Access – Cars are not accessible to everyone. Simply put, many people either can’t drive or don’t want to drive. Car-centric city planning is an obstacle for these groups, to name a few: children and teenagers, parents who must chauffeur children to and from all forms of childhood activities, people who can’t afford a car, and many other people who are unable to drive. Imagine the challenge of giving up your car in the late stages of your life. In car-centric areas, you face a great loss of independence.
  • Safety – Cars are dangerous to both occupants and non-occupants, but especially the non-occupants. As time goes on cars admittedly become better at protecting the people inside them, but they remain hazardous to the people not inside them. For people walking, riding, or otherwise trying to exercise some form of car-free liberty cars are a constant threat. In car-centric areas, streets and roads are optimized to move cars fast and efficiently rather than protect other road users and pedestrians.
  • Social Isolation – A combination of the issues above produces the additional effect of social isolation. There are fewer opportunities for serendipitous interactions with other members of the public. Although there may be many people sharing the road with you (a public space), there are some obvious limitations to the quality of interaction one can have through metal, glass, and plastic boxes.

UprisingVoltage,

Seems like rocksteady is not involved in this one. For better or worse

UprisingVoltage,

Source?

UprisingVoltage,

I was curious whether some scandal about data being sent to russian govt had emerged after the war, but apparently things are as they used to be.

Mind you, AVs have a scary control over your system, and I totally respect not wanting to use one headquartered in Russia (and since the government security agencies have ties within those companies even in the “free world” (lmao) it’s safe to assume Russian govt has them inside Kaspersky too).

With that being said, kaspersky is actually a multinational corporation present in many areas of the world, I wonder how much influence Moscow actuallt has over them.

UprisingVoltage,

I agree and I also support the “common sense is the best av” argument, but for less tech savy people and workplaces I do think it’s necessary to have a last hope safety net against malware

UprisingVoltage,

Kaspersky has faced controversy over allegations that it has engaged with the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB)—ties which the company has actively denied. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security banned Kaspersky products from all government departments on September 13, 2017. In October 2017, subsequent reports alleged that hackers working for the Russian government stole confidential data from the home computer of an American National Security Agency contractor via Kaspersky antivirus software. Kaspersky denied the allegations, reporting that the software had detected Equation Group malware samples which it uploaded to its servers for analysis in its normal course of operation.[13] The company has since announced commitments to increased accountability, such as soliciting independent reviews and verification of its software’s source code, and announcing that it would migrate some of its core infrastructure for foreign customers from Russia to Switzerland. In November 2020, Kaspersky finished relocating the data of its customers from Russia to Switzerland.[14][15] The company has also opened multiple transparency centers in Switzerland, Brazil, Canada, Spain and Malaysia which allow state agencies, government experts and regulators to review its source code.[16][17]

UprisingVoltage,

Because you need people to build a community, and like it or not, most people are on discord

There are other reasons but I think this is the main one

UprisingVoltage,

Why not? If it’s the best game of the year in multiple categories would you deny its merits and penalize it for it?

UprisingVoltage,

Last but not least, yes, we are in development on the next chapter – The Elder Scrolls VI. Even now, returning to Tamriel and playing early builds has us filled with the same joy, excitement, and promises of adventure.

So still no updates on TES6 then. Saved you a click I guess

UprisingVoltage,

Very fun game, I’ve been into it for a while and really enjoyed watching gameplay. Unfortunately i grew tired of it before the sales, and I ended up not buying it

UprisingVoltage,

Is it just me or very few games support FSR3? Which is a shame, it looks amazing on paper

UprisingVoltage,

What’s the mod?

UprisingVoltage,

The first fantasy life is super cozy. Very excited for the sequel

UprisingVoltage,

Wow, this looks amazing! Also top tier steam deck game

Thoughts on BOOX Tab Ultra C? (shop.boox.com)

Does anyone here have a BOOX e-paper tablet? I’m a big fan of e-paper devices—I love my Pebble smartwatch, Kindle Paperwhite, and Light Phone II. I’ve been eyeing the Tab Ultra C for quite a while, and I am considering the pros and cons. Mostly, I intend to use it for browsing the web and maybe some light note taking and...

UprisingVoltage,

I finally bought horizon zero dawn! I just hope to have some time to play it…

UprisingVoltage,

I don’t know if that makes sense, but to me it depends on how “canon” they look.

Usually the games that give you the m/f character choice will put more effort in one version of the character over the other, with the “non canon” one looking like they were forced to put them in there.

“Canon” version are also often featured in official arts and commercials.

Examples of who I picked in games following this line of reasoning:

Male Robin - FE Awakening, Female Corrin - FE Fates, Male Byleth - FE 3 houses, Female Shez - FE 3 hopes, Aether - Genshin, Stelle - Honkai star rail, Kassandra - AC Odissey

But again, this is very much a “how I feel on the spot” thing, no hard preferences in general.

UprisingVoltage, (edited )

Epic cons:

  • Filled to the brim with DRM, at the point where you can’t even launch many singleplayer games offline
  • Actively against linux, for some fucking reason
  • Bad launcher (but this one is no biggie, you can and should use Heroic launcher instead of the official one)
  • Bad store in general compared to steam
  • Ties with Tencent (super anti-consumer chinese state-owned megacorp)

Epic pros:

  • Free games
  • With coupons prices can get VERY low
  • When it opened I heard the percent they take from game devs was lower than the other stores (not sure if it’s still the case and tbh if it ever was)

Steam pros:

  • Pushing linux gaming like their life depends on it
  • Generally correct towards the consumer
  • Huge store and many information, from the game store pages to the workshop
  • During sales prices are good

Steam cons:

  • Drm
  • Bad official app Ux and messy ui

Gog

I don’t know anything besides the fact that it has drm-free games and that it’s owned by CDPR (the guys who developed the witcher series and cyberpunk)

I personally purchase my games on steam, since I think their contribution to linux gaming is crucial for linux to go mainstream

Choose what you will knowing this. If someone else wants to add something to this list you’re welcome to do so.

UprisingVoltage,

If you really want to use windows 11, download an ISO and flash it on a USB using rufus.ie/it/You can disable TPM by checking a box in rufus

You’re probably better off using windows 10 LTSC (or LTSC IOT), which are long term support win10 versions aimed at enterprise, with the only real difference being they come devoid of bloatware and they are supported for many more years than the consumer version.

Even better, think about “making the jump” and upgrade to linux. The most beginner-oriented distros are stupid easy to use (and with a better UI and UX than windows imo), you do not need to use the command line at all, they will support your hardware and they will most likely have the exact programs and games you use.

UprisingVoltage,

Tbh I see it as “prettier linux mint”. Good distro for beginners but nothing more

UprisingVoltage,

People either don’t know or don’t give a shit

UprisingVoltage,

Surely a good exercise for the person who does it and a good way for those who work(or want to work) in the field to see how other designers tackle these kind of projects, even if for fun.

Wouldn’t really call it meaningless

UprisingVoltage,

I see your point now and yeah, you’re definitely correct here.

Would’ve fit better in a web/UI/UX design themed community.

But tbh I enjoyed the video so I really don’t mind

UprisingVoltage,

Stop using spotify. Start using Vimusic, innertune

UprisingVoltage,

I usually use them to discover music. Then I make donations or buy merch/disks of the artists I really like.

Small stuff and when I can afford it, but I try to make my part

UprisingVoltage,

Not a “traditional” AC but extremely fun to play imo, recommended

UprisingVoltage,

I mean, it started implementing the RPG mechanics they used in origins and featured a hookshot, which was crazy fun imo but killed every incentive to do parkour and to escape guards. I personally consider unity the last traditional AC (haven’t played, seen nor heard anything on mirage yet)

UprisingVoltage,

What is portable content?

UprisingVoltage,

That’s a very weird choice indeed, remasters usually include extra content

UprisingVoltage,

The first one is super cool! Very excited for this one actually

UprisingVoltage,

Wasn’t it supposed to be available for every directx game?

UprisingVoltage,

Bit of a bummer but still great tbh, let’s hope it becomes some sort of industry standard. Not hoping too hard tho, lately the games released are not even finished, I doubt they’ll find the time to implement FSR on top of that

UprisingVoltage,
