You forgot all the heavy metals too! Lots of brutal heavy metals in coal emissions and waste, which we dont get even in low level fission waste.

That is simply not true, storage is a solved problem, and the reason for not having locations is a political problem. NIMBY (Not in my back yard) keeps the world from having permanent storage locations, not science.

Honestly yes! I made a strong bold statement its only fair to ask for references.

So here are a few general video’s along with a few interesting papers regarding storing HLW as/in glass-ceramics. The academic research and discussion of this immobilization methods is very robust so lots of stuff you can read on that subject.

BUT we dont have to store Fission HLW if we reprocess it and run it in conjunction with other reactor types like LIFTR. Much of the remaining waste produced in currently operating reactors is still mostly unused and at most 5-10% of the total material is used up. We can pass that through a breeder reactor and convert U238 to P239 which turns “useless” naturally occurring non fissile uranium into fissile plutonium.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plutonium-239

www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzQ3gFRj0Bc

www.youtube.com/watch?v=TaC2pvDMPc0&t=603s

So, my point is that assuming we keep using low enrichment uranium to power current BWR/PWR reactors we have an existing solution for the waste (which if ALL of the worlds HLW was combined would not even fill a professional stadium) that easily takes care of all the waste created since we started production.

BUT all that waste is actually fuel if we recycle/reprocess it and we can burn up another large percentage of that waste and its remaining elements are generally shorter lived forms of waste.

Yes, but no…

For a basic user, who does not expect to be doing anything special beyond opening existing programs, or using programs downloaded from the package-manager its possible to never touch terminal.

I have two kids who daily drive Manjaro based light gaming PC’s, they never touch the terminal, but they also dont administer their systems, I do.

I do use the terminal, frequently for updates, and some specialized tasks like minecraft mods which require unpacking files and sometimes fixing permissions.

So my TLDR, is that its possible to be a USER without touching the terminal, but I dont think its possible to be an administrator without.

infinitevalence,
@infinitevalence@discuss.online avatar

or, I can SSH from my computer in a different room, and do it with one CMD in terminal :)

infinitevalence,
@infinitevalence@discuss.online avatar

o sure, I could walk over and put in my admin password and do it all in the GUI. I cant think of any basic things that require terminal with modern DE’s like KDE. I just use terminal for remote management because its simpler than trying to work at their desks.

[SOLVED] I'm cheap and want a Linux keyboard

Thank you everyone for taking time to help out. While looking for keyboards, I’ve found a great deal on a new Keychron C3 Pro at Amazon for around $30. It’s a wired keyboard, but it’s got hot swappable brown switches and I figured there’s no way I’d find something better to dip my toes in this hobby....

infinitevalence,
@infinitevalence@discuss.online avatar

keychron.com/…/keychron-c1-pro-qmk-via-wired-mech…

Cheap, supports QMK/VIA on linux.

So this is a programmer keycap set, with lots of options related to the key cap profile.

Cherry is one of the most common, and close to OEM which is what most mass market keyboards use. XDA is a lower profile key cap with rounded edges. SA is a very dramatic profile and reduces travel distance to upper row keys and looks more like 60s/70s terminals. MOA is kinda cool as its a square cap that lofts to a round top.

keychron.com/…/iso-oem-dye-sub-pbt-full-set-keyca…

This is another great set in OEM profile.

infinitevalence,
@infinitevalence@discuss.online avatar

Do you mean that they the key press has nothing to do with the key cap, or just that the caps are unrelated specifically to *nix commands and shortcuts?

If you want the key press to send a specific *nix based command then you just program it to do that in QMK and create the keymap to fit your needs. You can even have multiple key maps and swap from one to another if you want a console/terminal specific map.

As for *nix specific key caps, there are not many out there and the sets I linked have some of the ones that could be used for specific tasks if you wanted. They are not perfect but they are better than a dedicated windows or co-pilot key.

infinitevalence,
@infinitevalence@discuss.online avatar

I mean its been 30ish years since I used a SUN or DEC system, but I know the key your talking about, what I dont understand is do you just want the key cap, or do you want the functionality of they key?

infinitevalence,
@infinitevalence@discuss.online avatar

Ok, now I am clear, if I see any unix specific key cap sets I will send them over. Sorry for all the confusion.

Awesome to hear, Keychron makes some keyboards that are a great value, even if they are not the best.

I keep going back to my K4v2.

keychron.com/…/keychron-k17-pro-alice-layout-qmk-…

I have the K17 Pro w/ Blue switches and its great, plus supports QMK/VIA so I can customize it based on games or OS and my needs.

They have several other low profile options from 60%-100%

nuphy.com/collections/keyboards/…/air96-v2

The Numphy air series are also a popular low profile option I have not used one yet so I cant speak to it personally. They also support QMK/VIA for customization.

ajazzbrand.com/product/ajazz-ak832pro/ajazzbrand.com/product/ajazz-ak832/

Ajazz offers a some 75%'s but they are seen as a budget brand so long term software support and customization options may be lower. I dont see anything related to Hotswap or QMK/VIA so you may not get them as features. Also its subjective but Outemu switches are also seen as budget options. Personally I do not care for the Outemu box switches, but I find the traditional Cherry Clones to be ok depending on the color type. Outemu Purples and Silent White are my go to budget switches when building boards for friends who dont have a big budget but also dont really know what they want yet.

redragonshop.com/…/low-profile-mechanical-keyboar…

Another OEM low budget option, personally I would not buy any of these. I Have two of their other keyboards one specifically because of the MCU chip on it, the other because I needed a 60% for one of my kids gaming computers. They are plastic crap, but they are cheap.

I have 4 Keychron’s and have not had any mechanical issues, though I did have a missing foam layer in my Q0 Plus that was indicated as being part on the website. I did not care enough to follow up on it.

I find their QA good enough for the price point.

Trump Might Be Too Broke for a $175 Million Bond, Too (newrepublic.com)

A New York appeals court on Monday reduced the $454 million that former President Donald Trump was required to put up while he appeals his civil fraud case. Now Trump must put up, by April 4, a mere $175 million. The trouble is, he may not get a bond for that amount, either. Should that happen, this act of judicial mercy will...

Only because the Democrats have contributed to support a failed and broken system because it sometimes kept them in power.

Conservatives have been openly stating their goals for the last hundred years all the Democrats had to do was stop supporting the status quo.

Well to start with maybe broaden your idea of evil. Just killing and murdering is evil but there are lots of other ways to be evil.

What about slowly turning good characters bad by slowly encouraging them to do small wrongs. Like convincing them to pick someone’s pocket. Or justifying theft and other petty crimes.

What about looking the other way when criminals commit crimes and just saying… Not my problem.

Start thinking about long term goals and then add narcissism and selfishness to every choice.

I have a USB extender that wont run at any other speed, but its much faster than 2.0 so I would really like to get it working consistently.

infinitevalence,
@infinitevalence@discuss.online avatar

https://discuss.online/pictrs/image/707a5291-eb3e-4feb-a28f-51e1f3accc1b.png

Not sure what you are suggesting… The issue im trying to fix is that this extender only passes 5Gbit/s so if I plug in something that can negotiate up to 10 or lower it will try to configure the lanes that way and the extender will fail.

The only device I have managed to get working is a USB WD Elements HD. Everything else I have tried that should support 3.0 never connects.

So I wanted to test to see if I could lock the port at 5Gbit/s to eliminate auto negotiation from my trouble shooting.

ahh makes sense, I will see if I can find one!

I love Keychron for the value, and quality they provide.

keychron.com/…/keychron-q6-qmk-custom-mechanical-…

keychron.com/…/keychron-k10-pro-qmk-via-wireless-…

Anything that says QMK/VIA is supported in linux as you can define your own custom keys and develop/flash custom firmware if desired.

I run a K4v2 modified with QMK as my daily and love it for its compact size but still robust keyset since I actually use my function, navigation, and 10keys on a daily basis. My travel board is a K17 Pro because I wanted something a little smaller and low profile for use on airplanes and hotels.

Nearly all the Keychron boards offer hotswap and either white or RGB backlighting as well so you should not need to solder anything.

infinitevalence,
@infinitevalence@discuss.online avatar

I use it enough when also needing to use my mouse I have a spare num pad on the left.

I like the use of space on the k4v2 and having every key near my finger tips.

Modified Keycron k4v2

Anyone using Kailh box Navy with a keychron?

I have a keychron V6 (it’s full size). Solid plastic housing, baby kangaroo switches and KSA caps (these are close to MT3 and SA if anyone is wondering). I like the keyboard so far, but it’s not loud enough for me. I like loud and clicky. My question is, does anyone here use a keychron V6/k10/Q6 or any full size with...

I run modified Silent Box Browns on my K4v2 but I specifically designed them to quiet things down with the largest tactile bump I can manage because my partner flips out at repetitive noises.

Most tactile medium-to-light MX-compatible switch (including clicky switches)?

I’m looking for a lighter companion to the Clickiez 40g (which actually has ~75-80gf peak force). The Clickiez and the Box Navies are the only MX-compatible switches whose tactility I’ve really found sufficient before, but I’m willing to sacrifice a little tactility to get a lighter switch for some special keys. What’s...

infinitevalence,
@infinitevalence@discuss.online avatar

You might try the Kailh Box Royals, or for even lighter, Silent Box Browns.

I ended up doing a hybrid of the two to get the bump I wanted with quiet operation.

that’s why I had to frankenstine mine, spring and bottom housing from the royal, stem, hammer, and top housing from silent brown.

I could have left the box hammer installed but the sound from the switch was too loud and undid all the advantages of using a silent. The green hammer from the silent was my compromise.

I have keycron k17 as my portable and it’s great for that.

Keychron Q12 is about the only thing that will tick most of the boxes unless you go with a TKL and macro pad.

That said, I like Keychron for what they are, a good mid cost, mid quality product. They are not the best, they are far from the worst. I have 3 of their boards and a num/macro pad.

looking for a US source for Gateron switches

I have a keyboard with gateron blue clear top (black base, clear top) switches. It has a few switches that no longer work consistently so I’m looking for some replacements.
