ATARI acquires INTELLIVISION brand (atari.com)

Atari® — one of the world’s most iconic consumer brands and interactive entertainment producers — announced today it has purchased the Intellivision brand and certain games from Intellivision Entertainment LLC. Intellivision Entertainment LLC will rebrand and continue its business of developing and distributing the Amico...

From everything I've read, most of the "devs" haven't done any actual work on the game past the initial brainstorming session. The "demo" video shown was just a mock-up.

I mean I'm not surprised since everything relating to the Amico seems to be lies and vaporware, but it's still disappointing.

Who would've thought that making your product more readily available would increase sales? That's so much more counterintuitive than "double down on NFTs and release schedules that require knowledge of calculus to figure out."

EarthBound was the first JRPG I ever completed and the first JRPG I ever enjoyed. Before it I'd never been able to get into JRPGs: there was just too much complexity while also having too little going on. Wandering an overworld only to be randomly pulled out of it for no apparent reason was maddening. As a kid, trying to piece together the backstory of some undefined thoroughly detailed fantasy world while also taking in the emerging plot in the opening sequence wasn't anywhere near as appealing as firing up Mario or Mega Man and getting straight to the action.

EarthBound neatly sidestepped all of the things that had stopped me from liking JRPGs. The equipment system was simple without being braindead. The setting was a pastiche of suburban life that I could easily understand. The stakes were high but the tone was still whimsical and amusing. And above all I knew why I was suddenly getting dragged into battle with a snake or a crow or a dog instead of just being clotheslined by combat.

EarthBound still is my go-to recommendation in the (increasingly unlikely) event that someone says "I've always wanted to get into JRPGs, what should I start with?" It is the perfect "intro to JRPG" game without feeling trivial or like it cannot stand on its own. It singlehandedly made me love the JRPG genre, and I probably would not have played literally every other JRPG I've ever played if it wasn't for EarthBound.

Yeah, you do have to grind a bit. Nowhere near as much as some games (looking at you, basically every Final Fantasy game) but the leveling is designed around you doing some extra fights for XP. Every new area generally has a "grind spot" that is moderately to incredibly obvious, typically some grouping of enemies that are enough to fight but not enough to overwhelm you, placed within reasonable walking distance of a bed, hotel, or other way to refill your HP/MP for cheap/free.

For the first town, before you take on the punks roaming the streets you should get some levels fighting crows, dogs, and snakes up near your house. Once you can kill them in two turns or less head into town and try taking on a single punk. If you survive that fight without being nearly dead, keep fighting punks. If you almost die, go heal up and farm a little more. And if you DO die... well you only lose half the money you have on you, so as long as you keep most of it in the ATM you haven't lost much of anything.

@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

That was someone's insane interpretation of the ending of the first Mother game (a.k.a. Earthbound Beginnings). It's not as out there as the guy who filled the Silent Hill wiki with claims that it was all symbolism for circumcision trauma (yes, really), but it's still kinda nutters.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

If you want to bypass grinding entirely then you'd need something like that, but it might trivialize certain parts of the game. Won't trivialize all of it though since several of the key fights rely on strategy.

While 177 countries sounds like a lot, it's not where the majority of players are. PSN operates in the top 15 countries by GDP and the top 4 by population.

Of course there's still the question of why they work in so few countries when literally none of their competitors (that I know of) have those limitations.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Screw it, go make the actual Starship Troopers game not suck. That thing is in dire need of help.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

I'm actually really surprised that Valve is loosening up on this one. They usually play hardball when it comes to refunding a game past the 2 hour mark.

They make exceptions when a game has major issues or implements some significant change that dramatically alters the availability of the product. No Man's Sky, Starfield, and Cyberpunk 2077 all could be refunded outside the 2 hour window - at least for some people. And of course everyone who bought The Day Before was refunded entirely.

I expect they'll be allowing refunds for anyone in a country where PSN does not operate at a minimum. It's really hard to argue that the game is still playable when the required service is not available in your home country.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

The scuttlebutt is that they don't get to make that decision because the PSN mandate is a part of the contract they signed with Sony.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Same boat here. I had no problems making a PSN account because I like the idea of crossplay, but if they were planning to add this requirement back in later they needed to be much more clear about it. Like "gigantic popup every time you load the game if you don't have a PSN account" clear, especially with PSN not being available in certain countries.

There's also the larger question of why this is required. Clearly the game works just fine without it. Whatever the reason is, it's not for the benefit of the players.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Most anticheats don't have the track record of repeated data breaches that Sony does.

Also no need to buy a Steam Deck version of that game you bought on Steam ten years ago, it’s already there and probably runs great.

Android could have had this same advantage too, but Google's now pushing this whole framework version check thing.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, we'd need to know the gpu or even vague specs on the laptop to give a good answer.

Even assuming that OP is talking about Intel Integrated Graphics that's still a huge range depending on which series it is.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

I said this elsewhere, but without knowing what specific integrated graphics card you're using (e.g. Intel HD 4000 series) it's hard to give specific recommendations. Generally though there's a range of things that will work:

  • Any game released 7+-ish years before the laptop was manufactured.
  • Most 2D games released 4+-ish years before the laptop was manufactured.
  • Anything that has an Android/iOS version.
  • Emulated games for anything from 2 console generations ago or more (e.g. OG Xbox, Playstation 2). Also the PC releases of those games (e.g. Knights of the Old Republic)

‘captain and pilot turn into amphibians, have babies, then get turned back into people but the babies stay on the planet.’

"And despite The Doctor knowing how to reverse this side-effect, Voyager doesn't ever use the tech again." Don't forget that part.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Oh is that why that episode was created? I had no idea.

I'll give them credit on hushing it up. I watched Voyager as it aired and I didn't find out about the fraud "Native American" they hired until years later.

yukichigai,

Transfigurations at least has a consistent main theme and message, and bad as the final special effect is (my dude I can see the texture on the zentai suit you're wearing) the resolution and the way it unfolds are very Trek, especially the semi-hopeful note of "they're jerks but only because they're ignorant and they might change once they know better." It's easier to forgive a lot of the awkward stuff in the middle when the end is on brand.

Meanwhile, Sub Rosa's only message seems to be "ain't no fuckin' like ghost fuckin'."

Also, I maintain that Code of Honor is the worst episode of TNG by far. Even discounting the uncomfortably possibly racist undertones throughout, the whole thing is full of incredibly regressive and outdated stereotypes of gender even for the time. Also it's just kinda boring.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

True. I never would've believed Kate Mulgrew could look so much like a lizard.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Code of Honor is so bad I thought for sure it was an unproduced TOS script they decided to recycle for TNG. Nope! Brand new story made for TNG. Astounding given that I'm pretty sure it would've been out of place even during TOS's run.

Then again, the pitch wasn't specifically for pseudo-African aliens. Someone else added that:

The African theme of the episode was brought in by director Russ Mayberry, who had the Ligonians race cast entirely from African-American actors. Mayberry was fired during production by the show's creator Gene Roddenberry, and First Assistant Director Les Landau completed the episode. Star Trek novel author Keith DeCandido later recalled that this was because of the casting itself, while cast member Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher) thought that it was because Mayberry was racist towards the guest stars after they were cast.

Even without that though the underlying "Strong Woman Suddenly Weak When Faced With Average Man" theme was pretty bad.

Alright, I'm done making new comments ranting about Code of Honor, I promise.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

TIL people don't like Fair Haven.

I mean it's not the best or anything but I thought it was kinda fun.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

They're more like AndroidTV boxes with a full menu and HDMI-CEC support, only they came out back in the day when Chromecasts were just for casting. They were also dirt cheap; unfortunately that's because they were made with bargain-basement parts which often failed or started to overheat easily a few months in.

yukichigai,

You would think, but the number of people I've met who surf the web without any adblockers at all and just seem fine with it is alarming. I think Google is counting on a lot of people just not knowing any better.

Won't stop me from informing them otherwise though.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Funnily enough I think the percentage use of adblockers is going to go up a fair bit thanks to what Google is doing. My amazingly sweet "just go along with anything" MIL actually complained to me about YouTube ads the other day, then ads on websites in general. She jumped at my offer to install a different YouTube client and a good adblocker once I explained that it was a possibility for her tablet.

If they wanted to pull this off they needed to do it quietly, not draw attention to the fact that adblockers exist and are apparently so effective they need to do something very public about them.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Best Buy did some mind-blowing sales late last year or early this year. You could pick up a bunch of 4K Blurays for $5 - $10. Lots of good stuff, too.

Damn, I had no idea. I should keep an eye out if they do another. I don't think we even have a BluRay player in the house other than in my computer, and it'd be nice to have the option.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

I had a similar "it's great I don't get what people are talking about" experience, only I was running it on lesser hardware than yours: 4GB GTX 970, 12-core i7-5820k, 32GB ram. I ran into a handful of bugs that were funny but not really disruptive (e.g. some dude's corpse floating behind a car as I was on the highway) and otherwise had a blast.

Nonetheless, it didn't really feel finished, y'know? That part wore on me, and I think is what undermined my enjoyment the most. It really was released too early.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

That's a very flamboyant use of a Flamberge

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

99% of it was them trying to make the new fee structure retroactively apply to already-released products, and the damage there has already been done. The fact that they think they can change the negotiated fee structure after the fact makes Unity a huge liability to use now. No one can ever be sure they won't suddenly pull a "give us more money or stop selling your game" move sometime down the line.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

Not always true; some games work really well on handheld/portable devices and the Switch is really good for that. The Binding of Isaac springs to mind.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

The number of CSS hacks needed to make the site anything but obnoxious even on desktop is obscene. Not just the ads, but the constant pushing of unrelated content and wikis, popovers, auto-play videos... it's awful.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

In-app purchases, requires 3rd party account, and no LAN.

Wow. I'm barely willing to put up with that for a free game. Not a chance I'm gonna deal with that for a thrice-delayed game by a rookie studio.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

The XP buff being better than normal Well Rested is still an improvement, but honestly Bethesda games should've been doing that since New Vegas.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

I have the one in the photo (an 8bitdo m30) and it's pretty good for most games. What tends to be the stumbling point is how many buttons the game expects you to press simultaneously: pressing A + X + L is a lot easier than A + X + Z. As long as you're not expected to mash though having the extra face buttons is just great.

yukichigai,
@yukichigai@kbin.social avatar

My go-to "standard" gamepad is a Mad Catz, actually. A lot of their controllers are weird and wonky but some of them are absolutely legit.

Also I had no idea they even made such a thing. That looks fantastic. Thanks for the heads up.
