Is there any major reason to choose one over the other besides the size?

are they finishing all the half-baked /game/ portions of the rest of the game? (outposts, space combat, fast travel, etc :) )

ursakhiin,

I get that things felt sparse but Starfield does have over 200 hours of content. That’s roughly how much went into my first playthrough and I never felt like it was repetitive. I also didn’t go for completion so there were likely another 100 hours I skipped.

So it sounds like the developers had a better bead on why D2 has been losing numbers and there’s no way for them to provide feedback. And as a result, they were probably tied into the layoffs. Talk about some obvious mismanagement. The wrong person was laid off.

mindbleach, to games in Embark Responds to The Finals AI Criticism: 'Making Games Without Actors Isn't an End Goal'

Yeah it is. Even if it’s not theirs.

Having to hire a real human being to represent a made-up character is an obstacle. “Games without actors” are how game development worked for decades. Even long after voice acting was technically possible, a lot of games did not have any, as a design decision. PS1 Final Fantasy games have oodles of full-motion video - but the characters speak exclusively in text.

The expectation of voiced characters adds immense cost, time, and restraint on any game. That is going to change. There is nothing anyone can do to stop it, and any backlash will be short-lived. This fight is already over.

And for anyone worried about the art of acting - look into “style transfer.” The shape of a voice actor’s throat can become as irrelevant as the shape of a voice actor’s face. When any person can sound like any character, all that matters is the performance.

Smoogs, to games in Bungie CEO Claims Layoffs Were Due to Destiny 2 Underperformance - IGN

Does anyone else have a fuckton of raid banners because EGC is so overly fucking complicated and super costly to have your team wiped after an hour of play to the point that you cannot scrape together enough players that KWTD or want to grind to make it worthwhile?

Yeah. That’s why.

There’s only so much crucible a person can take. And trials oozes with player toxicity. Gambit was kinda fun at first but now it’s rife with balancing issues which the devs seem to have lost all interest in addressing… And for whatever reason the most recent clothing styles are hideous so even the aesthetics are not exactly grabbing attention.

atrielienz, to games in Is Destiny 2 Still Worth Playing in 2023? - IGN

Bought it when it first came out to continue playing with my friends who played from Destiny 1. It got old really quick. I didn’t really enjoy it as much as the first game and I was really confused by the lack of character building in game. It felt really directionless after finishing the main quest. And I learned pretty quick that I wasn’t attached to any of the in game characters the same way. So I quit playing after about a year. Never picked it back up.

Defaced, to games in Sony Defends PS Plus Price Rises - IGN

The thing is they’re probably not wrong. Does it suck? Oh absolutely, but what I can say is that I have both gamepass and ps+, and the difference is pretty significant. PS+ has more quality titles, it may not have as many titles, but it has a more quality selection, gamepass however is very much quantity over quality. If all you play are Microsoft or EA games, then gamepass might be worth it, but I can definitely see how Sony might be struggling to compete because of how much gamepass has potentially diminished the value of console titles.

My guess is that it’s a situation of publishers not wanting to put their games on ps plus because they’ve already put them on gamepass and lost a good chunk of revenue from gamepass. Now Sony has to make up the difference because they don’t want to diminish the value of their own games and they really don’t have any other markets to prop up ps plus like Microsoft does with their cloud services.

I do worry about Sony, they really feel like Sega was in the Saturn/Dreamcast days. Struggling to keep up with competition and sticking to their tried and true business practices. The main difference though is they seem willing to embrace change unlike Sega.

echo64, to baldurs_gate_3 in Ex-Skyrim Developer Explains the Key Difference Between Bethesda Games and Baldur’s Gate 3 | IGN

It’s worth noting that this guy is talking not of old Bethesda but modern Bethesda. The writing team behind Morrowind and half of Oblivion absolutely cared about the details that only 1% of people might see. Morrowind especially is a world built around you exploring the world building. It’s not about levelling up (wowee I can miss the flying fuckheads 2% less now), it was about exploring the politics and cultures in the world.

At some point, Bethesda games became about the mechanical exploration, about going over there because that looks like it might be interesting, oh it’s just a cave with combat in it oh well maybe over there will be interesting.

And the stagnation it caused in the genre is evident, no?

halvo317,

No. Dragon Age: Inquisition, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and Baldur’s Gate 3 all draw influence from Skyrim. I think open world games are better because of Skyrim.

subignition,
@subignition@kbin.social avatar

Dragon Age: Inquisition and Witcher 3 both began development in the same year Skyrim released. I don't know if I can really say they were influenced by Skyrim because of the timing, but I haven't played either.

Baldur's Gate 3 drawing influence from Skyrim I will have to vehemently disagree with. That assertion just makes no sense at all.

ringwraithfish,

Skyrim is a great game.... for its time. Todd Howard is the blight on the games industry for putting so many resources toward so many Skyrim remasters/re-releases/money grabs. Even if he outsourced all that work, those are dev houses he could have spent their time helping Bethesda actually fill their huge open worlds and perhaps get the same feeling of "every decision actually matters" that Larion did.

Sadly I’m one of those people who doesn’t enjoy turn based combat, so I always preferred elder scrolls, warts and all.

lowleveldata,

Balder’s Gate 3 is so much more than combats

Son_of_dad,

Sure but there’s combat in it, and I can’t deal with turn based at all

lowleveldata,

So you have turn based allergies? Have you noticed that all those so called non turn based games have things like cool downs and reloads which are just turn based in disguise? Actually real life also takes turns which we call “days” to lie to the turn based haters. They never knew we were all in a turn based game from the beginning.

milkisklim,

Katana314, to games in Final Fantasy 14 Shows Off New Viper Class Alongside Final Fantasy 11 and 16 Crossovers - IGN

Hoping for fun times, but I guess I’m a little worried that the story for this expansion might lose appeal without a good conflict.

It’s very possible to make a well-written, region-localized storyline with lowered stakes than “potential end of all life”, I’m just uncertain how well they’ll do that given what the Warrior of Light has been through.

Kit, to games in Final Fantasy 14 Shows Off New Viper Class Alongside Final Fantasy 11 and 16 Crossovers - IGN

Cool, I might renew my sub to check out the FFXI content. I still play XI daily so I’d be curious to see what kind of lore they explore in the crossover.

jemikwa,

Fyi we won’t get the first wing of the XI ally raid until 7.1 (3ish months after 7.0, so September/October/November 2024) and even then it will only be one third of the total story. Totally fine if you still sub, but you might not get much value out of it until 7.3 with the second wing some time in 2025
