davidgro, to linuxphones in Lindroid Lets You Run Linux as an App on Android

There have been apps that set up a chroot with a desktop Linux distro for around a decade, maybe longer. Some of them don’t even need root. But this one definitely sounds more integrated and is interesting for that reason

Just go Debian.

Ubuntu used to bring a bit of spit and polish at a time when most Linux distros lacked that. Nowadays it brings nothing worthwhile to the table anymore, it’s just brand recognition, but what it does bring is aggravation for experienced users.

I had this realization a few years ago when I found myself fighting against 20.04 and I asked myself: what exactly is Ubuntu doing for me that plain Debian can’t? The answer was nothing really, so I moved all my Ubuntu VMs over to Debian Bullseye and never looked back.

That’s precisely I changed to MX Linux. I won’t use ubuntu for a long time I guess.

Arthur_Leywin,

If that’s the case, then I might have to use distrobox for once.

Remember those Winamp channels? Hope this leads into that. IPTV is supported by Winamp but not the easiest way to use it, maybe this would make that better too.

Edit - sorry I meant IPTV is supported by VLC*

hakobo,

I loved the Winamp channels. That’s where I learned about the existence of anime. I had no concept that things like Cardcaptors, Dragonball, Pokemon, etc were actually anime because I just saw them in English. But I found dubs through Winamp streaming and it sent me down the rabbit hole to buying DVDs and manga and learning to torrent fansubs. The good old days of my blazing fast 3mbps cable connection. It blew my mind coming from dial up.

Surprisingly, the popularity of this media player doesn’t seem to be going down in this age of online streaming, as the project reported a whopping 5 billion downloads of VLC across various platforms since 2005.

How the fuck is number of downloads since TWO THOUSAND AND FIVE in any way indicative of popularity not declining?

it would be optional for VLC users.

“Optional” like all the “optional” features crammed down your throat on Plex?

I’m very interested in the financials involved in this new change, and if someone is going to be filling their pockets in this transition.

maiskanzler,

How would they earn money on this? It’s still a FOSS project. They are simply revamping their GUI and adding support for one more protocol.

Plex is NOT FOSS! Plex is a private company’s cash cow.

helenslunch,

Your mistake is assuming for some reason that FOSS projects can’t make money when they absolutely can and have.

almost 1 download for every human on earth

“BUT IT’S NOT POPULAR! ALL THE DOWNLOADS ARE FROM JANUARY 1ST 2005 AND NOBODY EVER DOWNLOADED IT EVER AGAIN! IT’S ALL A CONSPIRACY BY BIG TRAFFIC CONE! I DON’T WANT FACTS LALALALALA” --this guy

Big Traffic Cone is coming for you. It cautions us all. That’s why it’s orange with reflective stripes. You should have heeded it’s warning. Be afraid, very afraid.

Zorque,

If all those downloads were from 2005 to 2015, and there's only been a few hundred in the last nine years, that would mean the popularity has declined.

But we don't know that. We don't know if the downloads have increased, decreased, or stayed the same based on the proffered numbers. We only know a flat number from the last twenty years.

Thats the point theyre making, not that its unequivocally unpopular now.

Also you're about three billion shy of one download for everyone on earth.

wreckedcarzz,
@wreckedcarzz@lemmy.world avatar

(to the entire public) STOP HAVING FUCKING BABIES

When I was in my prime it was 6 billion, and we liked it. Now get off my lawn!

JacketedSpud,

The original article (https://www.lowpass.cc/p/vlc-five-billion-downloads-vision-pro-app) states

The app surpassed three billion downloads in early 2019

so there has been at least 2 billion downloads in the last 5 years. Also,

The latest version of VLC, which was released in November, has already been downloaded more than 335 million times by desktop users alone.

I’ve met the devs in person. They keep turning down literal suitcases full of cash from people who want to bundle adware and crap in one of the most popular programs ever. Don’t assume VLC is going down that road – they’ve stuck to their ethics for decades.

Ransack,

Do you have any examples of things they could try or implement?

possiblylinux127,

A better UI and color scheme

Ransack,

Nice, I’m sure that adding a theming system would be do able. What type of interface do you think would work better than what it currently has?

VerseAndVermin,

This is it’s strength in my opinion. Libre isn’t great if you just want it to work coming from a Windows environment. I’ve tried quite a few options and this was my go to, it had far more of a friendly time with Word documents then Libre or others. Although I will say W3 was probably nicest but their sketch past of looking at people files and their local laws made me delist from my comparison list.

That’s a plus for getting more users though, people can easily switch to something familiar.

Anyone have experience with this? I just moved off windows to Linux and I haven’t settled on an Office replacement yet.

    greybeard,

I don’t gave a lot of use of it in my personal life, but I did switch from LibreOffice over to OnlyOffice and have been happy with it. The interface feels relatively modern and logically laid out. My spreadsheets tend to be basic tracking sheets and I haven’t made a written document file in ages, but for my modest needs, OnlyOffice is a clear winner.

    nadiaraven,

I use it in my nextcloud. I really like it. I tried to use libreoffice, but I didn’t like it.

Bit buggy printing and slower than shit to load. But once it’s loaded it generally works OK. A better one is WPS Office, but it’s Chinese and proprietary, though free (as in beer). LibreOffice is meh and printing doesn’t work great on it either.

    spider,

Also have a look at SoftMaker FreeOffice. The older 32-bit versions have worked well for me in the past.

    alfredon996,

A major problem with SoftMaker is that the equation editor does not work on Linux (and macOS)

    anothermember,

I’m a heavy user of spreadsheets and in my experience OnlyOffice is inadequate in features, it’s slow, sluggish, and crashes whenever you try to open anything big. I’m surprised it gets so much attention and I can only assume it’s used by people who don’t do any really heavy-duty work with it. LibreOffice is full-featured and is what I’ve been using for years, I’m very happy with it.

    Jayb151,

I personally don’t, but a friend told me it’s his choice for his pop os laptop when he has to work with clients who use Microsoft products. Sounds like it has the best comparability, in his opinion.

Between this and the pip install break all system packages

This has to be about the dumbest change I could possibly gather in the last 20 years of computing. I can’t even imagine breaking this many things all at once. I’m still dealing with the side effects of people’s installers from docker-compose and the pip problems - ansible will just never be the same again. Now this.

    e8d79,

How do your Python problems relate to a sudo/run0 discussion?

    spaphy,

If systems begin to drop support for the previous technology you run into incompatibility problems across the board
