Track_Shovel, to science in New England stone walls lie at the intersection of history, archaeology, ecology and geoscience, and deserve a science of their own

This is actually a really cool article. I did my MSC on a pile of dirt, so maybe it’s just me. Anyway, I like how he gets at how these walls act as a geomorphological feature on the landscape and from there, influence biota. The bit about mammals using the walls is cool, because in restoration and land reclamation we use artificial refuges (rock piles, bat boxes) to encourage animals back to the reclaimed landscape

LallyLuckFarm,

Not just you, I thought it was engaging and interesting as well. The comment about artificial refuges really strikes a chord as well, and I would add man made brush piles to the list of reclamation structures for encouraging animal resurgence.

Also, I’m excited that I might be able to describe the various rock structures on our parcel with greater scientific rigor.

Track_Shovel,

Yes, that’s right - brush piles and windrows of waste wood (from logging) are used to recreate habitat. Cowan et al 2011 (and 2012?; maybe they’re 2021/2022 respectively, I forget) has some great papers on how artificial refuges need to be constructed properly, otherwise they’re unused, or can serve as predator traps. I have the papers somewhere, though I had to request one from him.

If you’re interested, DM me and I’ll send them to you; it will require some digging, and I’m busy today, so I warn you turnaround might be slower than I’d like.

Blackmist, to world in Israel ‘yet to give any evidence’ UN staff were linked to Hamas massacre

I’m going to buck the trend and say I do believe that some (Israel say 190) of UNRWA staff are also members of Hamas. I’m also going to say that doesn’t justify the actions of Israel and withdrawal of international funding.

UNRWA have 13,000 staff members and volunteers in the Gaza strip. We’re talking everything from toilet cleaners to people who volunteer to hand out bags of rice and water. You can’t possibly vet that number of people when you’ve have a desperate situation at hand. You take all the help you can get.

If you dig right down into the lower echelons of any large organisation you will find people with extremist views. It’s just statistics.

At the very least, I’m gonna get my family out of this hell-hole that is Florida. I’m trying to stay in order to convince as many republicans to split their vote as I can though.

I know a lot of dumb-shit brain washed people that otherwise mean well, but have become oblivious to the hole they’ve found themselves in. So I have a tendency to befriend them and tell them that the only way we’re gonna get any change is if they vote third party. Convincing them to vote Biden is a step too far for most, so I’m just trying to disrupt the cheeto as much as I can locally. And of course my family is voting blue down the whole ticket.

Should have very strictly regulated the forever chemicals and micro plastics multiple decades ago. People are so inexplicably stupid and deranged that it has to be the chemicals.

@Atelopus-zeteki@kbin.run avatar

I dunno, maybe this is crazy, and there are reasons to consolidate critical manufacturing all in one geographic place, but maybe, just maybe if we spread these things out a bit, it might reduce risk? I'm just spitballin' here. Remember when the ONE factory making spray blown N-95 masks turned out to be in Wuhan?

MsPenguinette,

In their defense, Taiwan has been very strategic in making themselves extremely critical in one of the most important industries in the modern world. Keeps China from fucking with them too much cause it keeps everyone having a vested interest in protecting them

So what is good for Taiwan may not be good for the rest of the world? That's sad. Though I can better understand their motivation, with this tidbit of knowledge. TY!

Religious Zionists, who believe the Jewish people have divine authority to rule from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, make up only around 14% of Israel’s population. But in recent years they have greatly expanded their influence in the military, the government and society at large,

“In recent years…” What? Israel itself is a Zionist project since the beginning, from Hovevei Zion to Herzl to Haganah to Ben-Gurion to Sharon and Netanyahu.

It’s not binary. Them not voting for Biden doesn’t mean they’re going to vote for Trump. It could mean they just stay home and not vote. That’s what Biden needs to fix.
