It’s poking fun at tier lists for game characters. A tier list is just a list of things given a letter grade where F is the worst grade and S is the top grade above A.
I always thought it originated from comic books where nerds would rank powers of various heroes and the S tier was named for Superman because he was in a tier of his own.
Warp core unstable: open the door and talk to the engineer there.
Extra warp speed: open the door and tell the engineer to spice things up
Warp breach; open the door and tell everyone to eject the thing
Warp core down: open the door and tell them to get it running now, or get out and push.
See? No need to tap badges or anything. And all of it is communications blackout proof, crazy computer personality proof, engineers console re route and locked out proof, etc etc. It would allow ensign crusher to run the whole eng division, since 90% of TNG just can’t happen anymore.
I do love many of the post-TOS ships with their streamlined graceful curves, starting with when I first saw the 1701 refit on the big screen, but I grew up with TOS ships including the Star Fleet Battles and original technical manual, so I really love the old style scouts and tugs. I was overjoyed to get a brief glimpse at the Kelvin on screen.
