What ya mean! Haha naw I feel ya. It’s a pretty cool concept, but yeah the pacing is a bit slow and repetitive haha. I also like that Pike is one foot out the door at the start. I think the really cool special FX is what saved the pilot episode though. The invisible cage being melted by the phaser and of course the SS Enterprise. My dad said those blew his mind when he saw it back then.
Spock having emotions was a bit trippy though, really glad Gene changed him to “Vulcan” in TOS.
I did like that he was debating sticking around, that felt pretty human, but the blatant sexism was uncomfortable. That bit about “not used to a woman on the bridge… oh but your different…” suuuuper cringe and unnecessary. :p
I’m glad I watched it, but I’m also glad that’s not how it got made, ultimately.
The rest of TOS was not at all spared from this sort of sexism, and worse. The Enemy Within in particular makes me squirm in my seat. I actually really like The Cage as an episode, despite some of those valid issues.
If she was anything like the real Lucy, she would put up with bullshit for about .0003 seconds before telling the officer to get back to their station.
I kind of want to see Kate Mulgrew in a scene where she’s enslaved on an alien planet and forced to work in front of a conveyor belt with chocolates going down it…
I’m hoping the fanfic will start flowing. Not with Ball in her “I Love Lucy” persona, but more “The Dark Corner.”
Although, I think Janeway was directed this way, with Lucille’s dry wit. It wouldn’t surprise me if the scriptwriters weren’t paying homage to Ball with the Janeway character.
