Deconceptualist,

Excuse me, that’s the weed patio. The hookah goes on the porch.

Drones trespassing in my property

Idk if anyone had a similar problem before, but I live in EU by the countryside, at first there were only a few but now it happens more and more often to see drones passing over my house, I am sure they are civilian drones because law enforcement has no reason to use them since the area is quiet (and honestly I doubt they would...

Deconceptualist,

No, ignore this. Never shoot guns into the air, it’s both dangerous and stupid.

Deconceptualist,

I guess that’s fine if you live on a large isolated property. Where I am, the neighbor’s house is like 3.5m away.

Deconceptualist,

Sure, but most people probably don’t know that detail. Hunters probably do, but for your average dumbass a simple “don’t shoot any guns into the air” rule is probably for the best.

Deconceptualist,

I’m curious how the latest version runs. I haven’t tried it since the Unreal Engine 5 update. Kinda waiting to jump back in at the 1.0 release.

Deconceptualist,

Ugh yeah that’s tempting to reinstall once again. Last time I did the Call of Chernobyl mod which combines all three game maps and was pretty awesome. I hear Anomaly is really good too.

Deconceptualist,

Oh man, enjoy. In some ways it’s the best game ever. Some of the side encounters and story twists are top notch, and the game is gorgeous even on my ancient PC or Steam Deck. For some reason I stopped playing halfway through (I think I got distracted by Deep Rock Galactic over the holidays) but really need to pick it back up.

Deconceptualist, (edited )

Yep it’s Elden Ring for me too. I’ve been running my second character (pure sorcery) on and off for a while but the hype has me back in it. I’m a little tired of the gameplay and way more into the lore now. Hoping the new weapons and abilities give it a fresh feeling.

Deconceptualist,

So this community has devolved into kink-shaming then? Is that what this is? Obviously there have to be some ethical boundaries but between consenting adults this seems pretty harmless.

Deconceptualist,

Sure, especially if you’re the egg.

Deconceptualist,

Ok that’s how you do a modkit trailer. The horse on the roof! 🐎🤣

Deconceptualist,

🎼 Every seed is sacred / every seed is good… 🎶

Deconceptualist,

Exactly. It’s even easier for me to put their games on an Ignore List than for them to insert ads.

Deconceptualist,

Huh, I’ll have to read the rest of this bizarre story. I never knew the cultists shot and killed a congressman!

Deconceptualist,

The article seems to say otherwise.

Deconceptualist,

In the end, this will probably end up being nothing more than an inconvenience to Spencer, as he can repair it with just a few clicks if he has enough materials in his inventory.

I don’t play 76 so whatever, I just think this is a bit funny.

Deconceptualist,

I wouldn’t trust Unity for a split second after the licensing fiasco a few months ago.

Deconceptualist,

Serious answer: the sensors in telescopes and probes don’t work exactly like human eyes. They pick up a different range of frequencies than our cone cells in the first place, and don’t have the same sort of overlapping input curves. There’s a lot of tricks and techniques in converting an image into the same sort of thing we’d see with the naked eye. You can sorta think of it like translating Japanese into English; there’s no perfect formula and it requires some creative interpretation no matter what.

The popular images that get published all over are simplistic composites and never really reflect the actual data astronomers rely on, so that was never a hindrance to scientific progress. It suddenly made the news because a research group decided to reevaluate the old data and reinterpret it against calibrations from other equipment (e.g. Voyager probe vs. the Very Large Telescope here on Earth). There’s a general interest factor in “wow that looks so much different than the old pictures”, when the underlying data really hasn’t changed.

Deconceptualist,

My anus is not.

NASA-grade pics or STFU

Deconceptualist,

Yeah so maybe both Neptune and Uranus look hazy and dull green in visible light. So what?! They’re both entire worlds, significantly larger and vastly different in climate and tilt and composition and weather phenomena than our own, and we’re lucky enough to have seen them up close with probes. They have layered structure that can be seen in other wavelengths (e.g. infrared) and so many mysteries we haven’t yet conceived. Plus a ton of moons each that are weird and fascinating in their own right. They’re not the least bit boring to a curious mind.

Deconceptualist,

A pip and a peep? You flatter me sir/ma’am.

Deconceptualist,

Honestly it’s the shitpost community so kinda fitting. Too bad your miners won’t find much stinky sulfur after their decade+ journey.

Deconceptualist,

How long has this guy been staring at Uranus?

Deconceptualist,

Sort of? My understanding from reading a handful of articles is that Neptune has a bluish haze layer that’s absent on Uranus, but it’s fairly subtle and the overall color of both is a pretty similar frosty light green. So it’s not just that it got oversaturated but that that particular blue hue got applied to the whole planet and not just a thin layer.

Deconceptualist,

A friend’s mom was there in 1970. Wasn’t a good time.

Deconceptualist,

The Internet has ruined me, I expected something much different after the “I take it black” fadeout. The innocence of the joke here is quite refreshing 😄

I can’t help but notice Janeway developed an American accent in that 32 years though 😉

Deconceptualist, (edited )

OMG I love the movie, no wonder that line was in my head. Can’t believe I forgot the rest!

EDIT: Correction, 1980 ruined the Internet!

Deconceptualist,

I have like 20 times, can’t believe I forgot that was the actual line haha. Thanks!

Deconceptualist,

I don’t know where the young actors were actually from but they were both clearly playing parts intended as English high society.

Deconceptualist,

This article is garbage and the headline is misleading. youtu.be/6zkkJtCh22E?si=4DiCNZJgOY4AzxXK

Developer Intercept Games does indeed seem to be getting shut down :( There’s coverage at Eurogamer and lots of other sites, mostly pointing back to Jason Schreier (paywalled ofc because it’s fucking Bloomberg).

It’s not at all clear what that means for the game. “Safe” seems unlikely.

Deconceptualist,

Damn, I really hope this isn’t true. I just started playing (even though my PC is below spec and I have to run it at potato quality) and I was having fun with the improvements over the original. I’ve followed the development and yeah initial launch was way premature but the 0.2 For Science! update looked to have turned things around.

But staff departure postings on LinkedIn are a very bad sign…

Deconceptualist,

Cost? With the awesome Kung-Fu powers programmed into your mind you can manifest epic clothes like these at will. You just have to cross your arms into a super rad X-shape while you do it.

Deconceptualist,

I forgot it was a direct quote but yeah I had J.P. in mind lol

Deconceptualist, (edited )

That’s the thing. You can launch Steam and have it just get the hell out of your way, and go enjoy your games. You don’t really have to interact with any of the features on a regular basis. For many players, that’s perfect.

But it’s actually been incredibly innovative. Proton has made Linux gaming a reality when it previously seemed impossible. Remote Play Together is basically wizardry. Steam Input is fucking brilliant and lightyears beyond other control customizations. These things are available to every Steam user gratis if you want them.

(fixed minor typos)

Deconceptualist,

It’s not innovative anymore

What have you been smoking? That’s just plain wrong. See my other comment for examples.

Deconceptualist,

worst pieces of software ever conceived

Oh you sweet summer child. You’ve clearly never used Peoplesoft, or the shovelware packed with printer drivers, or browser add-ons from the Netscape days, or the horrible CD burner programs pre-installed on PCs in the 90s…

Deconceptualist, (edited )

FYI games on Steam don’t actually have to use any DRM. e.g. Kerbal Space Program – you can download it, close the Steam client, copy it to another folder, unplug your network cable… then go launch the .EXE from its directory and play anyway.

Deconceptualist,

Steam Deck had a bunch of cool tech launch both with it and soon after it launched, like Steam Input.

Steam Input actually started years ago with the Steam Controller 🙂 Valve has been quietly improving it for a long time now, and it’s only gotten better with the Deck. SI is the #1 most underrated thing in gaming I swear.

But yeah the Steam client has quietly and steadily improved on Linux, even in the past 6 months. I saw issues with storage sizes, graphical bugs, page loading errors… and nearly all of it fixed now. It’s in a good state.

Deconceptualist,

This is par for the Huffington Post, if you happened to notice the source. But yeah I’m with you that this probably shouldn’t qualify as news in the first place.

Deconceptualist,

Happy birthday! I actually just started playing Journey for the first time yesterday, less than an hour I’d say (on Steam). The visuals and fluidity of controls are nice, nothing spectacular by today’s standards but I’m sure they were great back in the PS3 era. The beginning felt a little slow trudging through the sand until I understood how the scarf upgrades work. But then when I encountered another player it really started to click and go more smoothly. I like how the game encourages cooperation by pinging and refilling each other’s scarf energy, though I feel like progress might go slow again if I get stuck going solo next session. The puzzles are very simple but I was feeling sick so having a ‘cozy’ game was actually pretty nice.

Deconceptualist,

The sphinx, as a type of chimera, represents a bridge between life and death (or for the ancients, this life and the afterlife). It will judge you and all your vows whether you like it or not.

Deconceptualist,

Haha. Vindication for my art history minor!

And sure, hugs are always good! In fact we should all be a lot nicer to one other. After all, none among us is ultimately getting out of this mess alive.

Deconceptualist, (edited )

This looks super helpful, thanks!

I’m a little nervous about swapping entirely over to nouveau for testing (well, moreso switching back) but I’m sure I can find a guide.

Update: No need, the problem was just Wayland vs X11.

Deconceptualist,

Install Linux From Scratch (LFS). Then you can give it your own flavor instead of someone else’s.

Deconceptualist,

Oof, yep, that’s all it was. I just fired up Elden Ring and it runs great under X11. Thanks a million!

I’d heard Wayland and Nvidia don’t play nicely together, but forgot KDE had officially made the switch. I’m sure I approved the install a while back but probably assumed it was all stable and compatible now. Guess that’s what I get for not reading the release notes!
