I’m running Endeavour OS (KDE Plasma) and ran into a weird issue with my graphics. It’s like windows sometimes flicker and flight with each other, some fullscreen videos won’t play and just lock to a gray screen instead (e.g. in Steam, though YouTube is oddly fine), and most 3D games are super choppy and unplayable.

I’m not asking how to fix this, I just want to know how I start troubleshooting! I haven’t done anything special with my system, and I think the issue started after a normal pacman update. My GPU is a GeForce GTX 1060.

Any suggestions to get started? I don’t even know if the issue is Nvidia drivers, X, window manager, KDE, etc.

EDIT: The problem was Wayland. Fixed by logging in with X11 instead!

Deconceptualist,

Thanks, I’ll try that. I figured an update would fix it by now (it’s been a few weeks) but maybe I do need to roll back.

And yes my other machine has an AMD card. This will be my last one from Nvidia since I’ve fully switched to Linux.

This looks super helpful, thanks!

I’m a little nervous about swapping entirely over to nouveau for testing (well, moreso switching back) but I’m sure I can find a guide.

Update: No need, the problem was just Wayland vs X11.

Deconceptualist,

BuzzKill is great for wrangling your notifications. Match a word or phrase and group them, snooze them, set special vibration patterns, whatever.

Deconceptualist,

That’s a funny way of spelling ‘spineless twats’.

Deconceptualist,

Well put a saucepan on my head and call me Dave.

Deconceptualist,

Oh no, Brits would put it on toast for breakfast. What an abomination 🤢

Deconceptualist,

Oh! My mistake, I didn’t previously have the courage to zoom in so I didn’t notice the sad, soggy square underneath…

Thanks, I hate it.

No. Every single gameplay mechanic in NMS is shallow and made by someone incompetent on game design.

The engine runs well and it’s a weird giant sandbox and it gets tons of grindy cosmetic content updates. But the actual game aspects are terrible.

EDIT: Disagree? Name one game mechanic that’s designed well compared to other games.

Deconceptualist,

Inch, singular I would argue. I don’t think there’s any gameplay mechanic here that can’t be mastered in 2 minutes (artificial grind notwithstanding).

Deconceptualist,

Among the best space games? What the heck are you comparing it to?

IMO it’s an okay giant sandbox but terrible as an actual game.

Deconceptualist,

That’s cool, but isn’t it also true of Elite?

Also I felt like halfway into the game there was nowhere good to go in my cool ships. I mostly went between my settlement and freighter.

Deconceptualist,

It’s actually the pre-amp and DAC quality that matter-- OH NO WHAT HAVE I BECOME?!

Deconceptualist,

I wish more people were this honest with themselves lol

Deconceptualist,

It’s two dimensions. You need both good bit depth (kbps) and sample rate (Hz) for quality. But yeah 96 kHz is more than double 44 so of course it’s significantly better.

There is however a point of diminishing returns and I’d certainly say that’s in play beyond 320 kbps (or beyond 96 kHz for that matter).

Deconceptualist, (edited )

Any audiophile would argue with you that the extra Hz help with harmonics that do influence the timbre and subtle qualities that are within hearing range. (/s, since someone needs it)

I personally don’t care, I’m happy with 44 kHz for nearly everything.

Deconceptualist,

Ok, fine, whatever, I don’t really care. I almost never have a reason to resample anything nor the equipment to tell the differences in any of this. You keep having fun and correcting people if that’s what gets you off.

Deconceptualist,

You’re aware of who this meme was mocking in the first place, right?

Deconceptualist,

Get off your damn horse man, this thread is for poking fun at twats who have to correct everybody. If you’re triggered by it, well good I guess. Maybe you’ll learn, or go someplace where technical accuracy matters. Because here it doesn’t.

Deconceptualist,

Well, almost.

Deconceptualist,

By this logic, the math problem the teacher called me up to the board to solve in 10th grade when I had a random boner was also a woman.

Deconceptualist,

Ah yes, the most erotic of all triangles

Deconceptualist,

My dad helped me install the original Wolfenstein 3D on DOS when I was a kid. And he’s 100% a boomer (b.1947). So for that reason it always feels accurate to me.

Mermaid

Nevermind, checks out.

Also, obligatory: would you rather fight 1000 cock-sized horses or one horse-sized* cock?

  • Yes the entire horse
Deconceptualist,

What chicken? Who mentioned chicken? 😏

The listing of specs for each preset plus the mention of “portable devices” are good signs for that. So we’ll see!

Addendum: Same for Ghost of Tsushima!

Deconceptualist,

Found the cosmologist.

Deconceptualist,

Yep. Cosmologists work at the largest scale and often simplify regular matter down to hydrogen (“gas”) and everything else (“metal”).

So if you ever see a reference to the “metallicity” of a star, that can include the presence of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, etc… which chemists of course would never refer to as metals.

Deconceptualist,

One ‘rule’ for each lemon, yes.

Deconceptualist,

I would totally buy that brand of juice. It seems extremely sure of itself.

Deconceptualist,

Haha, I saw the original Powerthirst™ ad back in the day, but never knew there was a sequel! Thanks for the laugh.
