FriendBesto,

Arch is you know how to use Arch. If lazy then something like Bhodi or Q4OS. I put the latter on a couple of friend’s laptops who recently jumped from Windows. Since it is very Windows-like but it uses less than 400mb of RAM to run on a cold boot.

Most people into Privacy, either stumbled upon the niche or work(ed) in some IT or related field. Have tried talking to the family, they are in denial or do not care. Or think that using WhatsApp is a wise choice and/or they are immune to ads. Somehow. It’s like talking to a goat who has more desire for habit over sense.

I remember playing with Google Now, thinking it ‘neat’ and then within seconds realizing that in order for it to work optimally meant giving Google everything. It got me to root my phone and removed Goople Play Services and/or different ROMs. Today, I do not use Google for anything or use front-ends with a VPN or if ever really needed, Tor.

Organic maps or OSMAnd. Plus, I find these two better for cycling and hiking, over Gmaps. If you must use Gmaps briefly, then GMaps WV from F-Droid.

FriendBesto,

The main reason is because the vast majority of people do not care or lack foresight of where that trend has been taking us for over 17 years. Surely you have friends or family who do not care. I do.

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you’d love alternatives for?

FriendBesto,

Full on Transit app that works well. Most that do are closed sourced and the ones that are open do not work well. A traffic app would be good but that would be very resource intensive. So not holding my breath.

FriendBesto,

Also, uBO today is a must for any power user, or just any user, for that matter. I have uBO on a number of machines and on average on my settings at leasr a cool 1/4 of all content and connections get blocked. That is a huge % given that I do not use any social media on my PCs. Not even YT, directly.

FriendBesto,

Had related issues and not only with Breezy. Had to switch back to the F-Droid app. Too bad.

I use my own API keys with it and it is great. Highly recommend. All that is missing is Radar. I use a different app for that.

FriendBesto, (edited )

Maybe he learned from what happened to uBO before the “Origin” label was needed.

FriendBesto,

Do not know why you are being down voted, you are correct.

I am thankful Mozilla exists because it provides some choice but if you have to changed the user.js --a non-trivial action for regular end users-- or use a fork like Librewolf, or Mullad Browser or even Tor to maximise Privacy that should mostly come available as an easy opt-in setting out of the box, it educates me that Mozilla is not the angel fanboys would like it to be.

Also, their telemetry collection is not trivial either, even more so in their Nightly builds, which in fairness is sort of expected. Also, do not forget that FF has pushed XPIs to end users without their consent in the past.

FriendBesto,

Agreed, this is why I am slowly moving away from Signal. The moment they announced putting in a wallet along their own crypto, was the sign for me to leave.

FriendBesto,

Wonderboy III

Sonic 2, 3 , & Knuckles, etc.

Altered Beast

Shinobi(s)

FriendBesto,

They are awesome. To me at least, but only if you save space by hiding the regular tab bar and it is easier to manage tabs since they are now closer together. Also, if you make the right --or left, it is up to you, I pick right-- sidebar auto hide and letting just the icons show. You do gain a lot of extra space. Mind you, you need to enable CSS via About:Config. On too of, before, using say, Sideberry. I like you thought I did not like it but now that I have tried it. I simply will not go back. I have a userChrome.css file that place on all my machines on a fresh install, now.

FriendBesto,

Nice. Thank you for the share and heads-up. Cheers.

FriendBesto,

Exactly that, I wohld assume. I could still get on with a VPN IP from some 3rd world countries over Western countries but even those are now failing.

FriendBesto,

They likely didn’t. They just don’t care.

How about, if you and anyone else hears it from the actual Minister? Out of his own lips. This is a short version, you can watch the full interview.

LP Claim: Canadians will get more money back with this tax. For sure. No questions asked.

That is either incorrect or a lie, your pick based on your political bias.

Goal post moved. Yeah. It will cost more given real world context and if the models hold, but why are you a dick having an issue with that?

“Why are you a climate denying?” But that is no the point or claim, the point is that you said that was not going to happen. That most people would get money back under your magical plan. The trend to inflation will make food, local food more expensive.

Yet I do not think making importing food from say, Mexico to Canada artificially cheaper than of growing it locally so we can have a fake, smaller or cheaper footprint as a good idea. Is not big picture thinking.

CBC take, for those who want some facts and examples, they leave out the carbon footprint of exporting food to us, so the footprint of Mexican, USA or other growers, so did the Liberals. Also, I am a Liberal, just not blind.

FriendBesto,

Freetube.

FriendBesto,

For FYI:

Install Freetube

Install LibRedirect on FF.

On settings point it to send YT links to Freetube.

I used Tab Wrangler to auto close tabs, so this will close tabs that are created after whatever time when pushing YT links, I have that set to a minute.

I am lazy and use KDEConnect, to my PC connected TV to send links. Like a remote.

Push links from any client, I use NewPipe. As it also has my channel subscriptions.

Enjoy, until Indivious is fixed. Could use other services but Freetube is pretty good and fast. Takes your own subscriptions too. Pipe like some others use JS, which I avoid and you have a lot of control over Freetube. This is easy to revert once everything his working.

Google: “Hey, do not be evil.”

Google years later: “Can I has all the profits and personal data?”

Google after that: " I am the Lizard Queen!”

FriendBesto,

Context: They are not unfair.

They are just not as outrageously and ridiculously high as say, American medical salaries, in the aggregate.

I mean, one is Socialised healthcare, the other is whatever private insurance madness Americans have. Where people can lose their home due to a broken leg, in fees. That is not really happening in Finland or Canada. Unless it is some extreme case.

Finally deleted my LinkedIn account!

After putting my account into "hibernation" for the past few weeks, I finally closed it. But I'm still looking for work. Thankfully I can still find positions (SRE and software dev) by just going directly to the company's site and finding a Jobs page.

Good luck to everyone else out there looking for work!

FriendBesto,

Given the context of OP, that’s good for them, no?

FriendBesto,

That’s great, friend! Congrats! I am looking forward to doing that, it is one of the last 3 social media accounts I have a left.

As a linux user, do you know about/use openwrt?

I have many nerdy friends who have been Linux users for ages. But most of them don’t know such a thing as Openwrt exists or have never bothered to give it a try. It’s a very fun piece of software to play with and can be extremely useful for routing traffic. Wondering why it isn’t more popular/widely used.

FriendBesto,

Yup. Running it on my home router, right now. It is awesome. A tiny, stripped down OS that you can install minimal packages on. Like a VPN client, or ad-blockers. If your router is compatible, I cannot suggest it enough.

Also, my router’s manufacturer had the gall to ask (force) me to sign up and get an ID with them in order to get to the back-end of my own router. Jesus Christ, privacy red flag much?

I could not install OpenWRT fast enough.

FriendBesto,

The story of the diary being stolen and sold is real. Content is what is in question.

“Friend, remember, it is not about the end goal but about the dead bodies of other motivated people you may encounter, along the way. Be wary of the denial that one day, it could be you, who serves the same purpose to those that come after you.”

FriendBesto, (edited )

It is not impossible for many. It is just not worth the risk of making more dead bodies while trying to retrieve them. So they do not bother. Callous to some but that’s reality. Hell, some dead bodies are used as milestones or waypoints for some going up.

There a few though that have been lost over the years. And trying to find them is simply too risky. There was the body of a British lady who you could see a few years ago but no one can see her anymore. Likely just covered in snow/ice.

Google Allows Creditors to Brick Your Phone (lemmy.world)

I installed NetGuard about a month ago and blocked all internet to apps, unless they’re on a whitelist. No notifications from this particular system app (that can’t be disabled) until recently when it started making internet connection requests to google servers. Does anyone know when this became a thing?...

FriendBesto, (edited )

My guess is they are leveraging the techninical and technology illiteracy of the average consumer to not only not know this can be done but to even know how to even look it up. I have done some tech support for people that I have known for 20 years here and there and I am still oustanded at how little people know about tech outside social media sites, or have but only the most superficial knowledge on anything outside their work related applications. Many, many People just can’t do their own research today specially, or so it seems in the aggregate. Unless perhaps if it is a hobby.

Also, perhaps some of these people may have shitty phones that may not have an option to install a custom ROM, too. Assuming they even know want a custom ROM even is.

FriendBesto,

Hence some addicted to the itch of distro hopping.

Fact: Lots of things happening in the UK for those who do not know:

Why was the Tavistock experiment allowed to go on for so long?

Hopefully, this will be the end for the cult of trans, which reels in impressionable young people when they aren’t sure who they are

telegraph.co.uk/…/why-tavistock-experiment-allowe…

Tavistock transgender clinic shut down by NHS after review finds it is ‘not safe’ for children

Young people who believe that they are trans will be moved into regional centres which will take a more ‘holistic’ approach to treatment

telegraph.co.uk/…/tavistock-transgender-clinic-sh…

“The decision is a response to the interim Cass Review, which warned that medics in the Tavistock had felt “under pressure to adopt an unquestioning affirmative approach” to gender identity rather than going through the normal process of clinic assessment with young people.”

PS: Do not shot the messenger. I was not the one who carried the investigations nor did the abuse as per described in the articles.

FriendBesto,

Bottled water? Most mustards and ketchups? Or well, any liquids in a plastic container? They now sell even olive oil in plastic bottles. I avoid them like the plague. We all should.

FriendBesto,

This.

FriendBesto,

For Privacy, Mull is better than FF out of the box, from F-Droid.

FriendBesto,

One step closer? Wrong. That line was plenty crossed when he had both his daughter pushing canned Goya goods from the WH, as a Senior Adviser(!?), and his son-in-law working in the Middle East file. Corruption or grifting? Why not a bit from colummn A and B?

FriendBesto,

Well then, what text editor do you use then?

/s

Are there any Windows-exclusive programs you use?

I had to test/fix something at work and I set up a Windows VM because it was a bug specific to Windows users. Once I was done, I thought, “Maybe I should keep this VM for something.” but I couldn’t think of anything that wasn’t a game (which probably wouldn’t work well in a VM anyway) or some super specific enterprise...

FriendBesto,

Libre Office is pretty good on Linux now. That is what the family uses now. No complains. Points for not being Microsoft’s data mill slave.

FriendBesto,

Played with it a while ago. Nice looking but feels bloated in general. Mind you. I lean on pretty light Distros, KDEconnect and a few of their other apps are top tier, though.

FriendBesto,

I still have a copy of Opera 12 on one of my old machines. Good times. Presto!

FriendBesto,

Nextcloud, FreshRSS and KdeConnect come to mind.

Gentle reminder to everyone that support for ends in about 90 weeks. Many computers can't upgrade to Win 11 so here are your options:

  1. Continue on Win 10 but with higher security risks.
  2. Buy new and expensive hardware that supports Win11.
  3. Try a beginner friendly distro like . It only takes about two months to acclimate.

@nixCraft @linux @windowscentralbot

FriendBesto,

I expect a jump in Linux users, which is of course great news. Albeit in time I expect even more Tech companies to get into the space too, which is not optimal. As I expect them to corrupt a lot of open source projects.
