As already leaked, the game is a 6v6 third-person hero-based shooter. Heroes include magicians, robots, creatures, humans, and more. There are currently 19 different heroes, each with different abilities and playstyles that you’d come to expect from a MOBA including ranged, healers, tanks, assassins, etc....

Apparently valve doesn’t really assign teams to certain projects. People can work on what projects they like and things organically get people behind them if they are looking good or interesting.

This means games that do get completed are often really good and ones that weren’t looking good fizzle out.

It’s an interesting approach for sure. I think it makes sense rather than steaming ahead with a bad game. On the flip side what could be an interesting product may die out.

It’s happened several times to half life 3 apparently.

How do we know if there aren't a bunch of more undetected backdoors?

I have been thinking about self-hosting my personal photos on my linux server. After the recent backdoor was detected I’m more hesitant to do so especially because i’m no security expert and don’t have the time and knowledge to audit my server. All I’ve done so far is disabling password logins and changing the ssh port....

You don’t. Hackers often exploit things like this for ages before they are found. Every bit of non simple software also has bugs.

But chances are you won’t be the target.

Just keep everything updated and you should be alright.

Open source doesn’t mean foss.

I think people being such zealots about getting paid is actually a huge problem with the open source community.

Giant corporations should absolutely pay to use these projects that are often labours of love done in spare time.

If they want to sell skins that are purely cosmetic I don’t have an issue with that. Some people have money to drop on stuff like that and it helps fund the game.

Loot boxes on the other hand can absolutely get fucked. It’s gambling, plain and simple. It has no place in games.

Since many apps require Google services to function on android they are using that fact to get a cut of all payments.

A huge amount of apps that an average user needs are on the playstore and require the services.

Google leverage that to force apps to use their pay services.

Google is using an unrelated thing to force the use of their pay services. Hence monopoly.

It doesn’t matter if a tiny percentage don’t do that. The vast majority need to.

The trains cost money to run so you are using resources you haven’t paid for.

Pirating takes away a possible purchase. You haven’t actually used any of their resources or cost them anything.

If I wasn’t going to buy it anyway they haven’t lost anything.

If you streamed it from their servers for free using an exploit that would be stealing, as you’ve actually cost them resources.
