Hi, I'm Shauna! I'm a 37 year old transgender woman from Ontario, Canada. I'm also a Linux enthusiast, and a Web Developer by trade. Huge Star Trek fan, huge Soulsborne fan, and all-around huge nerd.

I'm not surprised, to be honest. The first game was a success largely because of the interesting hook, which is that Senua is schizophrenic and they immerse you inside her mind by having voice constantly whispering in your ears, or sometimes a voice will rise above the murmur with something helpful, or not.

The actual game play though is not very good, it's actually pretty boring. So even if you were interested in that hook you probably played the first one but you're over it, and if you weren't intrigued enough to play the first one then you'll probably miss the second one too.

I love Eric Barone! He sticks to his convictions in the way I wish more video game developers would. He's made so much money from Stardew Valley that he never needs to work a day for the rest of his life, but he chooses to put in the time to continue releasing free content and working on new passion projects and giving back to the community. He could have monetized the hell out of Stardew, releasing DLCs and hired a huge development team to crank out new content to make him richer until the original game became unrecognizable.

So many game developers have gone down that route, or simply sold off their creation to a company that they know full well plans to do just that.

Also, I just love his mentality about things. He knows that nobody really asked for Haunted Chocolatier, and he doesn't really care if it's successful, he just wants to make something new for himself. I hope it is successful, but I'm glad to see that he's not hinging his hopes on it's success but instead just enjoying the process of making something, which is really beautiful and I think more people should focus their energies on those kinds of exploits and outcomes.

Trig requires some assumptions and special tools, like SOHCAHTOA and what not that don't really exist in standard algebra.

These researchers asked 10,000 Canadians what they think of the health-care system (www.cbc.ca)

A Toronto-based research team met with and surveyed some 10,000 Canadians about the state of the health-care system — and what they found is deep dissatisfaction and frustration with primary care as the country grapples with a severe shortage of family doctors.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

I dunno how it is in the rest of Canada, but here in Ontario, the Conservatives are constantly undermining the public healthcare system because they very clearly want to privatize it. It's really annoying how they're trying to slyly erode faith in the public system and letting people fall through the cracks for no reason other than greed. It's blatant to anyone paying attention, but sadly, most people aren't.

(SOLVED) Linux Laptop Gets Stuck on Black Screen After Suspending, No Way to Use Unless Restarted With Power Button

Recently bought a new laptop that comes with an AMD Radeon gpu and installed OpenSuse Tumbleweed on it which I had installed on my previous laptop as well but never had issues with suspending and resuming. However, with the new laptop, I am unable to resume after suspending or closing the lid unless I force it to shut down by...

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Are you using the dedicated GPU as your primary GPU or the integrated GPU? I've found using the dGPU as the primary can sometimes lead to suspend/resume issues.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

If you have an unusual setup, it can be annoying trying to give programs permissions and sometimes it just outright doesn't work. For example, I mainly game on a laptop which has a pretty small hard drive, so I tend to put most of my games on an external hard drive. Flatpak really doesn't play well with that.

It is a huge failure in communication to pretend that distro upgrades are entirely different versions of the operating system. It does nothing but make Linux seem more complex than it actually is.

The jump in distro versions, say, from Fedora 38 to Fedora 39, is not the same as the jump from Windows 10 to Windows 11. It’s more like the jump from version 23H2 to 24H2....

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Anyone coming from a development background will entirely get the idea of stable releases. 23.10 or 24.04 are just rolling releases of a stable distro. It's the production ready version. You can choose to opt-in to the development updates at the risk that your system might be slightly more unstable, but that's not a decision that a casual user should consider.

The version numbers on Ubuntu specifically, are just dates. 23.10 is the stable release from October, 2023. That's all it is and there's really no point in thinking about it deeper than that. It's a date, not really a version number.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, I'm saying that I agree that version numbers are harmful to mass adoption and I go on to explain that it's not really a version number at least in Ubuntu, but a "YY.MM" formatted date. I think making that more clear would help people that are unfamiliar with versioning and development.

I just started using Proton, but I don't think any of their apps are available for Linux natively, which is disappointing. I mostly use Proton apps inside Ferdium which I find useful for combining all of my productivity apps and Ferdium basically just keeps a website loaded, and websites are always cross platform compatible. I would love to know if there's a timeline for Linux apps in mind.

My biggest concern with Epic is their insistence on kernel level anti-cheat which is just ridiculous overkill and probably being used as spyware let's be honest. They have many ties to China's Tencent which has a 40% stake in the company and is known to basically just be an extension of the Chinese government.

There's also the very odd fact that just having the Epic Games Store open in the background will deplete your laptops battery life by up to 20%. Is it just horribly optimized and uses all that battery even when idling, or is it doing something nefarious in the background? We don't know.

As for exclusives, they have bought exclusives that were mostly crowd funded from the start which is quite the kick in the teeth to the early investors that helped get the project off the ground. And there were even some exclusives that were already listed for pre-order through Steam, forcing everyone to need to get a refund.

Plus, any good will that they've purchased so far is just in service of making a good name for themselves. They've been losing around $400 million per year since 2019 just to bring in new users. They're going to suddenly turn around and start being cut-throat as soon as they think they can.

They are not consumer friendly, they want to dictate trends in gaming. Valve is already the king of that throne and they're fairly benevolent and have pushed trends that are good for gaming and consumers overall. I have serious doubt that Epic would be anywhere near as good for gaming as Valve has been if they should actually become profitable, and an industry leader. Especially when it's projected that they won't be profitable until 2027, which means they'll need to recoup their investment of nearly $3.2 billion since 2019.

To those that are saying they don't see a problem with this mod. Let me put it to you this way. Instead of a mod that turned one gay woman into a straight man what if it turned one black character into a white character?

There literally was a mod like that in Stardew Valley that turned Demetrius into a white character, and it was rightfully deleted from Nexus mods. If someone has that much of a problem with a character being a different race, sex, gender, or sexual identity then they're clearly bigoted no matter what they say to the contrary.

It's gay erasure, and it's bigotry, plain and simple.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Maybe having to go through that hardship of rejecting someone because you're just not into something fundamental and unchangeable about them such as their gender representation will make you have empathy and understanding for queer people and the struggle they face daily where only about 1 in 10 people they're attracted to will be attracted back.

Exposure to queer media helps build understanding and empathy. Erasing it erodes that understanding and empathy.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Having to go through that hardship of rejecting someone because you're just not into something fundamental and unchangeable about them such as their gender representation will make people learn to have empathy and understanding for queer people and the struggle they face daily where only about 1 in 10 people they're attracted to will be attracted back.

Exposure to queer media helps build understanding and empathy. Erasing it erodes that understanding and empathy.

You still have the privilege of hitting on 90% of people you're attracted to IRL or in games reciprocating your advances, so it's not really that big a deal to have 1 interaction end in rejection.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

There have been multiple times that I've been friendly with women and they'll randomly blurt out "I have a boyfriend/husband/partner". This is a universal feeling, and it makes the game all the more realistic that it includes that. Unfortunately it had to happen with a gay character so people are able to toe the line of homophobia and say that they just didn't like the rejection.

I would be fine with a mod that simply removed the harsh rejection. It's not great for queer exposure and empathy building, but I wouldn't call that outright homophobia. It's lightyears ahead of turning the gay woman into a man.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

This issue isn't really about equality, it's about exposure and building empathy. The more people are exposed to the plight that queer people face every day, the more likely they are to build an empathetic connection to them, to care about queer issues, to see it through their eyes, and to understand and support them through it.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Because rejecting hateful content and making it fringe and inaccessible is for the good of everyone. Exposure to race, sex, gender identity and sexual orientation based issues makes everyone more aware and empathetic of the issues that other people face, and that's a good thing.

And yes, both of those mod ideas you proposed would be just as bad or worse than this one and should also be deleted from Nexus mods.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

It does spread hate by erasing a queer character from a game. It spreads hate by shielding the exact people who should be exposed to queer people and learn to be empathetic towards their struggles from it.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Increasing the gayness is one thing, removing all of it is queer erasure which is bigotry. Gay people face rejection from 9 out of 10 potential partners every single day. If even one person changes their mind about gay people because they were forced to be rejected by this gay character and it opened their eyes, then that's a huge win for civilized society and equality.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

It will still be fringe and more inaccessible, so only people who are deeply ingrained in their bigotry and probably have no chance of opening their eyes and having empathy will seek it out, which is a huge win for everyone else.

ShaunaTheDead,

Ugh yeah, FF7 when Aeris is killed by Sephiroth. And the scene where Cloud carries her into the water... I was bawling. Afterwards I think I just sat there dumbfounded, staring at the empty spot in my party until after like 5 minutes I turned off the game cause I needed a break to mourn. I know the graphics don't really hold up these days, but it was all to real to me as a child and it was one of my first experiences with death even though it was just a video game character.

You can. Just install them through WINE or Valve's Proton compatibility tool.

I have a feeling this response is directly related to how Linux users for yeeeeeeears have been told "we won't support Linux because there just aren't enough users to justify it". Now that there are official more Linux users than Mac users it makes sense to support Windows and then Linux if you can only afford to support the 2 biggest operating systems, but yeah, I really think this is more about Valve pulling a switcheroo on the usual "not enough users to support Linux" line we always hear.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Of course, that's what I was implying. The Steam data set for Operating Systems includes the Steam Deck under "Linux" which is why it's suddenly jumped up above iOS users. I'm saying that I think Valve employees are obviously Linux enthusiasts and have heard that line from video game developers for years, so now it's giving them a little bit of schadenfreude to say it about iOS users.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

I can't believe I'm saying this, but maybe they shouldn't release even more content. That game is jam packed already!

You think you're done and then BAM! you're running a fish farm and an actual farm, then BAM! you're running errands for a mermaid kingdom, BAM! you're doing a whole side quest under the ice sheet, BAM! you're opening branches of the sushi restaurant... etc, etc, etc...

I love to see a game with tons of a content but I fear they may have overdone it a bit.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Very simplistic TLDR now every action will be timestamped and when the server processes a tick it will play out the actions it receives in order and decide if any actions should be ignored, like for example if that player should have actually died before pulling the trigger.

I always thought that's how CS:GO servers worked, but apparently not! It seems pretty obvious and a very good solution that solves all of the problems between 64 tick and 128 tick servers in the past. Valve just continues to be a pretty amazing innovator in the world of gaming, you love to see it!

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

I had played other horror games before it but the first one I became obsessed with was Resident Evil 4. I think I mostly just enjoy survival horror type games for the challenge, because other horror games have never really held much of an interest to me unless they have some kind of survival aspect.

As a transgender person and as just a citizen of the world in general, I hate the "politicizing" of things. The validity of my personhood and whether I deserve basic human rights isn't political. And yet, transgender rights are questioned and removed in the regions where "politicizing" factions have roots, and "transgender porn" is searched far more there too. Hypocrisy in action, but their entire philosophy is about burying their heads in the sand, so of course their own hypocrisy evades their notice.

Neither is Planned Parenthood's mission to give people options for family planning political. Anyone who disagrees with Planned Parenthood can choose not to use their services, but as has been proven time and time again, the places where Planned Parenthood is needed most of all is in the places which try to ban it so vehemently. They don't care about the women who die in back-alley abortions, and they don't care that proper sex education can actually prevent abortions because talking about sex makes them squeamish. They yell and scream "murderer" to the doctors who are actively trying to help them and save their lives because they can't see past the indoctrination.

The people rabid to "politicize" things they disagree with are the biggest of hypocrites and I'm so tired of seeing companies capitulating to these blinded idiots over "political issues" that have no business being labelled "political". I'm a person, I deserve the same human rights as anyone else, and women deserve the right to choose what happens to their bodies. It's obvious and self evident to anyone who isn't burying their head in the sand, or still trying to dictate the lives of others based on ancient fairy tales.

God that video (and the follow up to it) are infuriating and disgusting that such a company can continue to exist.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

I'm not sure if it qualifies exactly as what you're describing, but Metal Gear Solid 2 had a moment where they subvert the game over screen. At some point in the fight a game over screen comes up but it's full of typos like "fission mailed" instead of "mission failed" and there's a small window in the top-left where the fight is still on-going.

Also, notably, all the soulsbourne games kind of subvert the player's death by making it basically required to continue most of the time.

Have you played other programming related games?

Here's a search result from Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/tags/en/Programming/?flavor=contenthub_toprated

A few that stick out to me, mostly because I've played them and they're pretty good, are Human Resource Machine, While True: Learn(), Opus Magnum, and Shenzhen I/O. I would say Bitburner too but that's more-so literally programming.

I think your idea is interesting, but based on the examples I've listed, which I must admit is not a huge sample, most of them are played in a sort of GUI experience sort of way. I think it would be very, very difficult to translate the core concepts of programming to a side scroller.

However, as I said, I think it's a really cool idea, just thought I'd point out some similar games in case you had never heard of them.

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

You could maybe make some kind of a lemmings style game where functions change the behaviour of the creatures in order to achieve some kind arbitrary of goal. Like arranging their colours based on the rainbow, or something to that effect. The creatures would be a stand in for data, and the things the players can do manipulate the data to achieve a specific outcome. Is that more what you were thinking?

ShaunaTheDead,
@ShaunaTheDead@kbin.social avatar

Oh, thanks for posting that second video! I'm sure the action video works great for some people, but it's not my style, I find those highly stylized, quick cut, action videos can be very misleading about how a game is actually played. They must be effective though because game developers always seem to release trailers like that... Anyway, the second video with the actual gameplay looks very promising, I'm excited for this game!

Holy shit this is AMAZING!!! This chapter is a Killer & Survivor release according to their roadmap if I'm reading it right. Please give us Ellen Ripley as a survivor with this chapter... Don't do us dirty like with the Scream release where it was just Ghostface and no Sidney Prescott.

In the past, games were developed with specific hardware in mind. They didn't really think of how their game would run on modern PCs 25+ years later. Some games even used that as a feature, famously, Space Invaders devs noticed that the game started speeding up as players destroyed more of the enemies because it didn't have to render them and so it made the game harder as you progressed which was more fun!

By the way, there are ways to run retro games with speed limiters, you've just got to look into it more.

I just finished Control and it's really good! Jesse is a strong female lead and there's no male option like some games.

I'd recommend: Hades, Dead Cells, The Binding of Isaac, and FTL

The best advice I thankfully saw early on in a video about Death Stranding is just hold down L2 and R2 all the time while you're running around and you'll automatically balance yourself in 99% of situations. If you find yourself still tipping over, then just slow down or stand still for a second.
