E. Jean Carroll’s Lawyers Foil Trump’s Quiet Attempt to Stall $91 Million Payment (www.thedailybeast.com)

When Donald Trump posted the $91.6 million bond on Friday allowing him to appeal the E. Jean Carroll decision without paying her immediately, it set off an interesting scramble to unpack why Federal Insurance Company—a subsidiary of Chubb Insurance Company—would lend to a notoriously unreliable borrower....

brbposting,

On one hand, life’s short & +/-$3m in interest is a lot.

On this other hand:

N. Alex Hanley, an expert in how companies appeal enormous judgments, thinks the potential two-month gap doesn’t sound all that odd, given the immense amount of money in question and the huge players involved.

Yeah, big judgement.

Still, two weeks for impeached president and two weeks for the bond company still sound like enough time.

Are there tools that exist to anonymize writing styles?

I feel like with the rise of AI something that anonymizes writing styles should exist. For example it could look for differences in American versus British spelling like color versus colour or contextual things like soccer versus football and make edits accordingly. ChatGPT could be fed a prompt that says “Rewrite the...

Oh ya for comparison’s sake. Vet the claims: it’s a better writer, coder… or it’s worse at those, lots of anecdotes.

The Backrooms are a fictional concept originating from a creepypasta posted on a 2019 4chan thread. One of the best-known examples of the Internet aesthetic of liminal spaces, which depicts usually busy locations as unnaturally empty, the Backrooms was first described as a maze of empty office rooms that can only be entered by “noclipping out of reality”.

alt-textThe image depicts Fred Rogers, affectionately known as Mister Rogers, wearing his iconic red sweater as he sits on wooden steps on the set of his beloved show, “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” He is in the process of putting on his sneakers, a familiar scene from the program where he would often change into his sneakers while singing the opening song. The setting includes a large green potted plant to his right and a railing with vertical wooden slats behind him.

brbposting,

So you have to let the million people die b/c torture is too naughty:

Consider another example. Suppose that Sally’s father has planted a nuclear a half hour. Sally is the only person who knows bomb that will detonate in where he hid it, and she has promised him that she will not reveal the location to anyone. Although she regrets his act, as a devoted daughter she refuses to break her promise and give away the secret. However, if we do not discover where the bomb is and dismantle it within the next half hour, it will blow up a city and kill a million people. Suppose we can torture Sally to get this information from her.
According to the DDE, is this permissible?
No, for the end does not justify the means. Con- dition 2 is violated. We are using a bad act to bring about a good effect.

Bonus:

On the other hand, suppose someone has tampered with the wires of my television set in such a way that turning it on will send an electrical signal to the next town where it will detonate a bomb. Suppose I know that this will happen. Is it morally wrong, according to the DDE, to turn on my television to watch an edifying program? Yes it is because condition 4 is violated. The unintended evil outweighs the good.

brbposting,

I should’ve added - we know torture doesn’t work, but that should be mentioned in the hypothetical. As it stands, I’m tempted to believe torturing the daughter is guaranteed to result in her revealing the information which will save a million lives.

brbposting,

If less is more then what the hell is that?

brbposting,

Just learned this last year!

Flour doesn’t look like a raw food, but most flour is raw. That means it hasn’t been treated to kill germs that cause food poisoning, such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Salmonella. These harmful germs can contaminate grain while it’s still in the field or flour while it’s being made. Steps like grinding grain and bleaching flour don’t kill harmful germs—and these germs can end up in flour or baking mixes you buy at the store. You can get sick if you eat unbaked dough or batter made with flour containing germs. Germs are killed only when flour is baked or cooked.

CDC investigated outbreaks linked to raw flour or cake mix in 2016, 2019, 2021, and 2023.

Have to condemn Riemer & Lieberman here…

How’d you interpret the last two paragraphs?

Even if most people would not invoke the commandment to destroy Amalek today, there are certainly those, like Rabbi Riemer, who have ventured to do so. And there has been no dearth of similar, violent invocations in reference to the Palestinians, as well. For example, Benzi Lieberman, the chairman of the Council of Settlements said in no uncertain terms: “The Palestinians are Amalek! We will destroy them. We won’t kill them all. But we will destroy their ability to think as a nation. We will destroy Palestinian nationalism.”

The general consensus among today’s Jewish community seems to be that our energies can and must be used to stop the perpetuation of genocidal activity occurring throughout the world, to become agents for peace, and to dismiss any contemporary comparisons to the biblical paradigm. But clearly there are difficult texts and teaching that remain in our tradition that must be remembered and reckoned with.
