caut_R,

Trine 5 was probably the best Trine to date. It‘s almost a year old, but already discounted to 15ish bucks in sales. Took a friend and I 20 hours to platinum and we had so much fun cheesing the puzzles and doing stupid stuff. I wish there just was no combat in the game tbh, it‘s just there to gatekeep you from having fun with the puzzles lol. I also wish there had been more achievements related to playing a level in a specific way that you gotta figure out. There‘s one for crossing all rivers in a specific map without touching water, and one where you gotta beat any map without destroying boxes. These two were a lotta fun to do.

I was also obsessed with HITMAN (Jan 2022 according to Steam, was a year exclusive to EGS IIRC). Now it‘s just some crappy liveservice-esque thing, but when they actually did new maps and stuff I had tons of fun walking around the crazy detailed levels and looking for small npc skits the devs put in there, doing looney toons banana peel assassinations etc. Agent 47 being that unfeeling killing robot trying to destroy the world controlling illuminati makes all the slapstick so much funnier.

caut_R, (edited )

I’m not saying it’s a bad game, it’s easily in the top 10 favorite games of mine (I meant to refer to liveservice as a concept as crappy, not the game). I was just trying to say it was a better franchise when they actually made new games with new maps. Now they‘re done with HITMAN as far as I understand so no HITMAN 4 for the foreseeable future. They even went ahead and rebranded HITMAN 3 to HITMAN WORLD OF ASSASSINATION to further emphasize that this is gonna be an everturning wheel now in their minds. I‘d much prefer a HITMAN 4 with fresh maps, fresh ideas, and a fresh spy thriller story. This HITMAN‘s still the best game in the series IMO and getting the map packs gives new players insane amounts of content. However, HITMAN 4 should be in the making by now, not this liveservice stuff.

IIRC they are making a James Bond game, so here‘s hoping that that‘ll give me more of this kinda gameplay.

Anyone who hasn‘t experienced HITMAN, however, should definitely get the game with the map packs on top and play the whole thing, they‘re in for a treat.

caut_R,

Not sure what you disliked about 4, but we had tons of fun with 5. The combat‘s meh but IMO it‘s always been.

caut_R,

Yeah, I miss those threads cause I don‘t have enough to say about the games I play to fill out a whole post. And I don‘t want to follow stabdards or make a draft or spend more than 5 minutes really to casually talk about games, and if I make a whole ass post I feel pressured to deliver.

Having someone active be moderating would obviously be good.

As for what I‘ve been playing… Wuthering Waves and Genshin Impact for a couple minutes a day, then Marsupilami and Balatro on my own, and Trine 5 with a friend. I also started and had a look into a lot of other games, but nothing stuck with me as much.

I finished Mario 3D World on Switch and went on to have a look at Bowser‘s Fury and oh my sweet Jesus, it‘s so good. The music! Sadly it‘s just 30 fps, which is the only bad thing I have to say about it. 3D World was fine but the 2D/3D mix didn‘t feel right.

caut_R,

To my eyes, Pokemon also went clay/plastic when they moved from 3DS (USUM) to Switch. I hope Nintendo moves on from this look. I want to see something in the style of Windwaker, personally.

caut_R,

Probably Bowser‘s Fury (Switch), Balatro or Trine 5 (PC), and Marsupilami (Deck) for me!

caut_R,

One of the few games on my radar this year, Mana is largely nostalgia to me so I‘m probably lurking for a sale unless it surprises…

caut_R,

Too risky regarding personal info you might’ve overlooked IMO, maybe give it to a friend instead

And obviously it‘s against the ToS and might get the account banned but I assume you know that

caut_R,

DISCLAIMER: The following is a subjective opinion, your mileage may vary

Wuthering Waves hit me blindsided. I went in with low expectations since Tower of Fantasy was so incompetently made (just IMO, no offense), but this game is easily a top 5 anime action RPG from what I‘ve played among the likes of Ni no Kuni II, Code Vein, and Genshin.

The combat has more skill expression (perfect dodges, counterattacks to break the enemy) than Genshin, and the story is more mature (human sacrifices for example), both of which I welcome. It has barely launched, has technical issues (stutters a plenty, no inverted camera option, etc.), and other things I could nag about (dudes too edgy, girls too uninspired), but the animations, graphics, and story presentation are surprisingly good and top notch as far as gachas go. I enjoy the story more than Genshin‘s too.

I recommend to give it a shot. In its current state it‘s already super fun even with its shortcomings. If this was a singleplayer game on Steam, I‘d buy it for 40 bucks, it‘s that good lol

What are some eras of gaming that you've stopped feeling nostalgic for? (kbin.social)

As I've gotten older as a player, I have found myself dropping some eras of gaming that I used to be nostalgic for. One of them is the 8-bit era, the NES days. I have played some of the best that system had to offer and I will never say that system didn't have any good games....

caut_R,

Since publishers are allergic to dedicated community servers nowadays, I’d argue there‘s just no feeling of community anymore and hence it‘s worse or at least different than it used to be. You just get matched with random people you‘ll never see again and that makes it easier for people to be unhinged pricks.

I think I‘ve spent hundreds of hours on an militia only server (uk2 or sth?) in cs1.6 in the past and hundreds on a back to karkand (or so?) rush only server in bf3 back in the day. I recognized a lot of names on these servers every time I played.

With how multiplayer games work now, I also try to avoid them.

caut_R,

This is - crazy enough - the first time I‘ve ever read someone mentioning Goemon and I couldn‘t agree more

caut_R,

It is! I‘ve ever only known it as „Goemon 2“ and it‘s very different from the first game (it‘s a 2.5D sidescroller) but also a fantastic game IMO. The first game is kinda like an N64 Zelda game… Kinda.

caut_R,

What are people without a PSN account missing out on? What content does the multiplayer portion have?

caut_R,

Oh, that‘s cool, I‘ve never played the original so I‘ll wishlist thi, I‘ve just too much on my plate already atm

caut_R,

Helldivers‘ success somehow caused a crazy knee jerk reaction among the management suits at Sony. This whole sudden „make a PSN account or fuck you“ is just bizarre. To me it seems like they’ve lost more than what they‘re hoping to gain from this. Just a mindboggling move.

caut_R,

Valve isn‘t publicly traded (AFAIK) so they don‘t have to squeeze every last penny if they don‘t want to. And Steam revenue alone can fund anything gabeN wants to do. They don‘t have any ideas for HL3 they‘re satisfied with so they don‘t make it. And I respect that a lot TBH.

Reflections on Xenoblade Chronicles

Xenoblade Chronicles has been one of the broadly popular JRPG series as of late, particularly within my own social circles. I have heard mostly good things about the games, and some vocal criticisms about the second game in particular. After finally picking up a Switch last year, I have now made my way through most of the...

caut_R,

I have a big problem getting into the combat of XBC3. I just feel like all I‘m doing is standing there waiting for cooldowns to come back. Which also gives me the feeling that I‘m „playing the game wrong.“ I tried finding a guide on how to „properly“ play the game and to make combat more involved - to also make it more fun for myself - but couldn‘t find anything good.

caut_R,

Ok, but how much Blizzard is even left at Blizzard? lol

caut_R,

I‘ve recently finished Fallen Order, Unravel, and En Garde.

Fallen Order was a nice game although I always felt like the game valued celebrating its animations over how in control I felt. It felt kind of sluggish to fight and the frequent traversal stutters were also a bit meh. It sounds like I didn‘t like it but I‘d give it a 7/10. There‘s also no fasttravel at all. It‘s absolutely worth picking up on sale if you‘re into soulslikes.

Unravel is a really old game, but it‘s a 2D platformer and through its realistic style stood the test of time thus far: It‘s great to look at even today. The story‘s somewhat emotional but if you don‘t like it, you can ignore it since it plays out wordlessly in the background. Puzzles and platforming sections weren’t frustrating and just fun. I think I looked up a solution like twice and it usually turned out there was an object I could interact with that I wasn‘t aware of. Fantastic music. The game‘s cheap and great, I‘d give it an 8/10. If it crashes on start up, you need to download and install the basic version of K-Lite Codec Pack, the game uses an old codec for videos that you might not have.

En Garde is a cheesy indie Zorro game with Sekiro mechanics and lots of environmental interactions. It‘s on sale on Steam right now for 10 bucks and absolutely worth it. Great music, combat feels snappy, the game does its thing and then it’s over, no fluff. It‘s also tough at nails to do no hit runs and pretty hard even on normal runs (it ramps up in chapters 3 and 4). However, it has „accessibility“ options which are basically just cheats (infinite health, auto parry, etc.), so tune to your liking. I‘ve beaten a lot of soulslikes and found normal difficulty enjoyable. 8/10.

Now it‘s back to Skyrim and Monster Hunter World.

caut_R,

I played 8 then 9 and later 7 and didn‘t like it. But it probably also didn‘t help that it was hard to not get spoilered if you hadn‘t played it already. I already knew some twists so I didn‘t get surprised and played through the whole thing while expecting it.

I loved 8 back then but 9 was just so fucking good I liked it even more. 8 blew me away with its story back then, but 9‘s gameplay resonated more with me and the graphics weren‘t as hard to look at (probably thanks to its comic-y style).

So personally I go 9 > 8 > 7.

On a sidenote, FF pretty much lost me after 10. I did play through all of 15 and I thought it was mediocre at best. The plot holes (you have everyone‘s fucking number but not your fiancees?!) were annoying, the gameplay hardly felt like a FF, the story in general didn‘t do anything (positive) for me. In retrospective I probably would advice myself to not buy it.

(Sick atm so apologies if this is just some confusing rambling)

caut_R,

That game‘s so fucking good. I also 100%d it with a friend back then (screw collecting all hats), and we had a blast. Hope you guys have one too! Now I want a sequel lol

caut_R,

I‘ve only ever played it in Early Access through family sharing and only casually, but if one thing stuck with me then how atmospheric the game was. It‘s kinda meme-y to say but the game really made me feel like I‘m stuck in an abanfoned village in the middle of freezing nowhere.

caut_R,

The Nioh games are amazing. I spent hundreds of hours playing them and hundreds of hours helping others in coop. I really love playing those tough as nails games in multiplayer, it‘s like sharing the pain, and sharing is caring lol

caut_R,

How‘s CK3 running on Linux (especially lategame if you have a late savefile) and with what CPU?

caut_R,

If you happen to get to the late game and remember this post, let me know how it goes!

Any reason you didn‘t opt for a 7900X3D?

caut_R,

Sometimes coming back to things with a fresh mind can give quite the new perspective

Games that still need more patience: what games released a year ago (or older) are you waiting for a sale on? Or that need another patch?

Other than a slew of Nintendo titles that maybe hopefully will come down in price (the patient gamers’ bane), I have my eye on the next time Divinity: Original Sin 2 goes on sale. A friend who never plays anything other than WoW loved playing Larian’s newest with me and I’m trying to get her to pick this up. Pretty sure...

caut_R,

BG3 honestly. I‘m not willing to pay more than 40 bucks for a digital copy of a game no matter how good - especially considering the amount of games that I have piled up waiting to be played.

Oh, and Persona 3.

caut_R,

If I had heard anything positive about the remaster at all, I would‘ve replayed it by now… It‘s an amazing game in my memory but I haven‘t played it in well over a decade. I remember being obsessed with buying real estate and tank racing (shooting backwards propels the tank forward). And trying to fly that weird plane on the airport which was real hard to do IIRC lol

Subset Games created two amazing games: FTL & Into The Breach

I’m not sure if this counts as a “patient gamer” because I played them to death years ago…but I’ve been playing both again recently and they’re just perfect little games with a ton of replayability. They’re not retro (FTL 2012, ITB 2018) but they’re old enough to regularly go on sale which is great!...

caut_R,

I‘m saving Into The Breach - like many excellent 2D pixel games - for when I get my Steam Deck, gonna be later this year hopefully, looking forward to it

caut_R,

Ikr? The last Zelda I played before TotK was one (or two?) on GBC with seasons and time manipulation and I can‘t remember a thing about them other than the mechanics being great… So I guess they’d make an amazing „second“ playthrough?

I remember a lot more about A Link To The Past, especially being extremely anxious back then about the thief that lurks on the way to the Master Sword…

TotK didn‘t blow me away as much as it blew away critiques. There‘s just so much empty space between points of interest… I haven‘t given up on it though. Keeping it spoiler free, I’m at the part where I gotta look for someone specific down in the Abyss which is a bit daunting since it‘s big, dark, and full of enemies (I know you haven‘t played it, I‘m just rambling, apologies).

caut_R,

I think I got Terraria for like a buck (can’t remember where) and while it isn‘t my favorite game ever, my gf loved it to death and I got dozens of hours out of it (my gf hundreds). It‘s undeniably a great game and the dev is a maniac in terms of long term support.

How to revitalize this sub?

I love the original patientgamers subreddit so I was stoked to find this community. And because lemmy seems to have a more knowledgeable crowd any topic I posted here had great engagement and discussions, despite the small community. I am too busy to be a mod but maybe I can help by sparking this discussion: what would be needed...

caut_R,

I liked the weekly/bi-weekly „What are you playing“ posts, but they seem to have stopped, even on the bigger „games“ subs.

I‘d post about games I‘ve played lately (like Unravel) but I feel like „was a cool game with a cool style which made me enjoy the graphics even today and was interesting to platinum“ doesn‘t start much of a discussion.

Maybe I‘m just jaded by Reddit‘s „ackshually“ culture that jumps on you if a post‘s not a well thought out thesis, but I feel pressured to deliver substantial quality when posting (not commenting) on boards and I‘m too tired from the day for that.

Which is why I liked the „What are you playing“ posts since I could just drop a one liner and comment on other one liners of people who are enjoying games I‘ve enjoyed as well lol

caut_R,

I‘m on another patient gamers sub, and the games sub on lemmy.world. The biggest weakness of Lemmy IMO is how fractured communities can become due to very similar subs on different instances - which this is now an example of, I suppose, since I had no idea about the ones you mentioned lol

I‘ll check them out later, although it obviously doesn‘t help this sub specifically

caut_R,

With how many, many, many gamer targeted products look, apparently the target audience is 8 y/o. Idk if it helps or hurts sales.

caut_R,

Would making it a torrent be a bad thing? Since they were worried about hosting.

caut_R,

I got all the Assassin‘s Creeds (apart from Valhalla and Mirage) on sale for way less with all the extra bs… it‘s not a multiplayer game with a playerbase that could die off, so I‘ve got time to wait for a sale in 3-5 years. Who knows, maybe it‘ll even run properly by then. Buying on release is paying extra to take part in an extended early access beta.

"Worshippers of Cthulhu" - Lovecraftian city builder

So, I saw new game - https://store.epicgames.com/pl/p/worshippers-of-cthulhu-0fd3a2?fbclid=IwAR3yt_mwO1ju5HEInJyte-ZWIkPiB7NQ81BxplTniFVINZfXhd0TkXRpSCU_aem_AWnENz3wLNsMYhhDXZrM9Y3xy50ON-bUyCzadulNGpPG4J9ks6ZbjrCduTqtdw7N4K_37i2M9xZqB_Jv72klpg85 . It looks very interesting. I am not sure if there were any strategy game based on...

caut_R,

It‘s also on Steam in case others are wondering like me. Wishlisted there. Really cool theme, hope the gameplay can deliver too.

Gameplay mechanics were also a lot better with more replayability. (lemmy.world)

Ignoring the lack of updates if the game is buggy, games back then were also more focused on quality and make gamers replay the game with unlockable features based on skills, not money. I can’t count the number of times I played Metal Gear Solid games over and over to unlock new features playing the hardest difficulty and with...

caut_R,

The good thing was that games were complete and they didn‘t try to suck ever last penny out of you post-launch. Also, no updates meant they actually couldn‘t just ship them broken and fix later…

caut_R,

Patient Gamers eating well (and sensibly priced)

Sega sells off Relic Entertainment, will axe 240 jobs (www.gamedeveloper.com)

Canada-based studio Relic Entertainment, which recently released Company of Heroes 3, did receive some good news in the midst of these layoffs. The company announced on X (formerly Twitter) that it is becoming an independent studio thanks to the help of “an external investor” who went unnamed.

caut_R,

How independent is Relic really if they got bought by an unnamed external investor? Still better than getting axed and hoping the same kinda layoffs won‘t just come later („The studio hasn’t indicated if it will lay off any workers as part of the shift“).

caut_R,

I feel like I haven‘t heard or read anything positive about CA since they did Shogun 2

caut_R,

The dream duo: Suits that are out of touch with their customers and chasing trends with a multi year delay lol

caut_R,

That’s the kinda forward thinking that I like to hear! Here‘s your 200m, you have 2 years, I expect a prototype of the ingame shop by the end of next week

caut_R,

CPU usage in Monster Hunter World is also quite high and installing the performance boost mod from Nexus doubled the FPS for me. I don‘t think I have a single Japanese PC game that doesn‘t have performance problems.

If you wanna pirate a Denuvo game, you better get comfortable cause those take a long, long while.

caut_R,

It’ll be legally distinct Double Quarter Life 3

caut_R,

I wanna say they‘re not chasing whatever FROM‘s been successful doing recently, but… yeah

I absolutely love Nioh and Nioh 2, avoided their parry game because of mediocre to bad reviews like these, and this now is a PS exclusive so I guess I don‘t even have to make up my mind…

caut_R, (edited )

Really good to see, gonna check out the HUB video too.

Sadly, no DLL swap possible to instantly reap the benefits in older, FSR2-butchered games…

Gonna be interesting to observe how many devs are gonna go back to update their games, especially on consoles.
