I remember the school computer lab. They bought all the computers in 2002 and didn’t replace them until 2011. It was like stepping into a wind tunnel the fans were all so loud

I mean, I’m still running basically the same PC I built in '14 so I can’t say shit lol

But Alabama the band is pretty great, and I don’t even like country music.

Fish and steak are totally different animals (pun intended) and the way they are handled after slaughter is completely different.

Chickens are dunked in a cold bath with a lot of other chickens after slaughter. This creates a lot of opportunity for cross contamination. Air chilling the chicken mitigates, but doesn’t completely eliminate, this. It’s still potentially dangerous to eat air chilled chicken undercooked because the structure of the meat still allows salmonella to more easily penetrate the muscle. Air chilling chicken at scale is a newer approach because it’s always been cheaper to water chill it. Air chilled chicken is significantly more expensive to purchase.

Cattle are air chilled, but before they go in to be chilled, the carcass is gutted and washed out. Care is taken to ensure tainted meat is not present during the chilling phase. Chilling cattle is also an aging process that takes several days. You wouldn’t eat a raw steak because pathogens do get on the surface of the meat, but they do have a hard time penetrating the muscle. So yeah, you sear or grill the outside to kill those pathogens. They certainly can get into the muscle so eating a steak at under 165°F does still carry risk of foodborne illness. Still, it’s generally safe to do so.

The same can even be said of whole pork cuts. The USDA recommends at least 145°F with a 3 minute rest period.

As for fish, I don’t know enough to assert anything, but I’ll speculate that it’s because fish is handled and chilled over ice very quickly and you’re always eating whole cuts. Still, raw fish is risky and it’s significantly safer to at least cook the outside. Don’t let that stop you from trying raw sushi though.

Ok but if I could have tiny humans chasing a laser around…wait that just sounds like children.

We have two cats. Each about 14 pounds. A little overweight, but not so much that the vet is concerned.

Both get 70 grams of food a day. One gets fed once a day right before bed. His food is left out, out of reach of the other cat. The second cat gets fed at various times throughout the day. Her food bowl is put up when it’s not a mealtime.

So far, neither of them are waking us up at night lol

Timothy McVeigh was pulled over for driving without a license plate an hour and a half after blowing up the Murrah Federal Building in downtown Oklahoma City.

From the Wikipedia article

Within 90 minutes of the explosion, McVeigh was stopped by Oklahoma Highway Patrolman Charlie Hanger for driving without a license plate and arrested for illegal weapons possession. Forensic evidence quickly linked McVeigh and Nichols to the attack; Nichols was arrested, and within days, both were charged.

He likely would always have been caught, but he got picked up quick because of that.

So by XKCD’s calculations, when Piccolo blew up the moon, it should have taken the Earth with it.

That would have solved a lot of problems here.

Seriously, the piping work is awful and inconsistent. I’d ask for at least a partial refund.

The kid probably loved it but I really hope the parents didn’t pay like $70 for this shit.

I’m 31. I grew up listening to cassettes. It wasn’t until '03 that I got my first CD player.

It took longer than I’d like to admit to get the joke.

Same is generally true here. I’ve never had a car that doesn’t turn off the fog lights when you turn on the high beams. Maybe on older cars that had them. I think the idea is that if it’s foggy, you shouldn’t have your high beams on ever.

Mine is my '97 Prelude that runs and drives but needs work. So until I get jack stands, it’s not getting worked on yet. Once I do have jack stands, it’ll probably get parked on them for a few months while I address the things I can.

It mostly needs fluids and suspension work. It does have an oil leak that needs addressing. Then I’ll get to the body issues. Two big dents. I’d like to see what PDR can do to pop them out. If they can be done relatively cheap, I’m going to give it a new coat of paint in the original Milano Red. Myself. Because Maaco would have charged damn near what I paid for the thing. So I’m gonna try a roller paint job. If it’s really expensive to get the dents taken care of, I’ll probably leave the body alone. I kinda like the concept of a car that’s mechanically sound but looks like a piece of shit. It also needs the spoiler because the Type SH does not have an interior third brake light. It’s in the spoiler. Someone along the line must not have liked the spoiler and took it off. The trunk lid was obviously repainted. So anyway the car has no third brake light.

I paid $2,700 for the thing. So I’m not about to spend another $7k to have a car that’s worth at best $5k. It’s got 253,000 miles on it. It’ll never sell for what top shelf 5th gens command. And I do so little driving now. I did the math that it’ll take another 17 years for me to roll the odometer to 300k.

Car guy checking in. I think Teslas are cool and all, but trains are the future. I want trains to be so good that people would rather take them so that people like me, who care a lot about driving, get to drive. And people who would rather read a book or play a game while commuting aren’t forced to drive when they clearly don’t want to.

I have a 1997 Prelude Type SH manual. And I’m looking to replace my 2012 auto Civic with an 8th Gen Accord LX manual because I really missed driving stick daily and want a cheap manual I can daily.

If that the same one about vacuum fluorescent displays? That’s such a cool video to watch on any OLED display you have.

Also, found out from that video that my 10 year old Whirlpool oven uses a VFD.

$1,000 is a nice little windfall to get back in February or March.

$1,000 is a lot of money to suddenly have to come up with before April 15.

My wife let me buy a Prelude for my birthday last year. It was a big deal because we don’t normally have the cash on hand to just buy a car, and she put off some house projects she really wanted to get done to let me do it. The car does need some TLC, but it still runs and drives good half a year later. Sometimes people throw me a shaka sign or a thumbs up. I love getting to drive stick again. It makes driving fun, like I’m 16 again. Feels good, man. I’m one lucky guy, and my wife just gets me.

My brother works for a school with 200 kids PreK-12. He’s a teacher, but he also does IT. He gets a $500/yr stipend, and he calls me at least twice a week with basic questions that are solved 95% of the time by rebooting the computer.

I’ve told him a number of times the district owes me that stipend lol

I have a Homebrew Wii that I got set up about 10 or so years ago. Homebrew Wii can run lots of stuff. With emulation, it plays any 2D Nintendo game really well. I haven’t tried N64 emulation on it yet, but I imagine it’s pretty good.

Then it has hardware support for the entire GameCube library.

Basically Homebrew Wii can play every Nintendo game up to its own generation.

I’ve got an RTX 4070 and a 4790K. I’m fully prepared for my CPU to have a really hard time keeping up. I think an upgrade will be coming early next year.

I get that it’s just a shitpost, but the doctor who gets paid $200k a year has a much better chance of giving a shit about the financial hardship a medical emergency can bring to a patient than the capitalist executives at the top of hospital administrations and insurance companies who get multi-million dollar bonuses each year. Your doctor is just another cog in a machine. I’d argue most doctors do not take joy in knowing how pricey these things are, but they don’t set the prices, unless they are also part of the group running the show.
