Lost my 3DS Stylus Rule

Also I made a new acc so I can use Voyager! Previously used @SmoochyPit.

My main reason for moving to Lemmy/Kbin was to have 3rd party app support, and Beehaw ceasing Lemmy updates has now prevented that (for Voyager, at least). I still love Beehaw though, but the website is really bad on mobile.

Anyways I’ll comment a picture when this print finishes 🙏

aBundleOfFerrets,

I wouldn’t recommend printing that vertical, even if it makes cleanup easier, as it will be much more prone to snapping

SmoochyPit,

Definitely would’ve been easier to print (less tinkering with slicer settings), too. But I think because the layer time was so quick, it’s surprisingly well-bonded.

That’s still the first direction it’s snap in, but I think it’s good enough for my use-case.

aBundleOfFerrets,

When your printer is well tuned there is a lot more room to ignore best practice I guess :)

SmoochyPit,

Haha, welllllll fwiw I had to tinker with slicer settings for a few iterations before 😅 keeping the raft in place for the top layers was a bit tricky.

I lost mine in a tragic sounding incident.

You LOST it???

Resistentialism,

I’m pretty sure he “lost” it in there purely so he can use it as a projectile when he’s in danger. This should allow fpr leeway on a sexual assault charge. And he can claim.its not premeditated.

I let go and it kinda just slid in too far.

SSUPII,

I wish I had a 3D printer.

I replaced my N3DSXL stylus by buying a pack of 10 from Amazon for €6.79, and for what it is was overpriced as hell obviously.

It’s always nicer to make things yourself.

LordAmplifier,

Same. I kinda want to buy an affordable used one, but realistically, I’ll play around with it for a week, print a couple of things, and then it’ll collect dust for a year until my interest suddenly comes back for a week.

SmoochyPit,

It’s handy for sure, but the effort that has gone into learning about and using it for me has been a lot more than I expected. It’s become a total hobby for me!

It could be worth checking if you have a local library or maker space with 3D printers available~

This stuff is why i love my 3d printer. Ive been using it to print new pads for my mouse ( tpu and resin as finish ), clips for my fridge ( pla+ ) and bits and pieces of my porch’ flywheel that is on wheels ( petg ).
And recently printed a fidget cube to keep myself busy with

It’s finished!

The creator of the model replied below with links! I highly recommend this model if you need a stylus, it’s working great!

I should’ve been a bit more careful with where I put support material— one side of the bridge part is a bit bumpy. But it still works, so I can’t complain too much. Also, the bottom part where it connected to the raft is a bit rough. Might be worth lightly sanding it down so it’s a nicer finish when stashed.

Happy you enjoyed my design, though I think you should’ve shared the printable/thingiverse link.

On that note if it breaks (since you printed it upright, try printing it on its side with the nub facing up. You’ll need a raft and supports but it can be easily remove and the stylus won’t break… it’ll just bend.

SmoochyPit,

Thank you for the design! It’s working great so far, but if it breaks I’ll give that a shot.

Also I agree, I should have linked it. Sorry about that. I posted it to 196 because it was the most recent picture in my camera roll, but it really would’ve made sense to link it in the follow up pictures. I’ll edit that comment to point to yours, just in case.

No issues man! Happy your enjoying them

huginn,

Hope it turns out ok. Usually printing tall narrow things in that orientation results in wobble and uneven layers at the top, if it finishes at all.

If it fails try printing with 1 side touching the bed or at a 45° angle with supports along the bottom. You’ll have to sand down the supported surface but it should at least complete!

SmoochyPit,

It definitely does seem sketch, but the creator of the model recommended printing it vertically— it makes the gap, nub and tip a bit smoother.

I had to slow the layers a bit and play with the raft and supports (I originally did a 3ds xl stylus a few months ago, that’s where my trial-and-error was)

Here’s how it turned out: lemmy.ca/comment/8779564

huginn,

Glad it worked!

That’s ultimately the point of printing in my view. If you’ve made something useful you’re doing it right.

SmoochyPit,

Agreed. My favorite print I’ve done is a super basic rectangle with a circular section cut out of it, I made it myself with openscad and it’s propping up a pipe in my basement. It’s so cool how flexible 3D printing is! I’ve still only scratched the surface…

Hedlosa,

I always bite the little end piece in so it doesn’t catch on the 3ds and just keeps falling out lol

SmoochyPit,

I hadn’t bitten mine, but I do think it had worn down a bit. Pretty mine fell out, too.

optissima,
@optissima@lemmy.world avatar

Wouldn’t printing horizontal add more stability to the print?

SmoochyPit,

Yeah, the main shaft ( 😥🤤 ) would have gained stability from being horizontal, but the bottom has an awkward bridge with a nub on it that would possibly need supports. Also the tip is a bit smoother off-the-bed with concentric rings than with stacked layers on supports, so those things benefit.

lemmy.ca/comment/8779564

It feels pretty sturdy, but it probably wouldn’t be hard to snap if I wanted to. I saw some other designs that printed the stylus in separate pieces, which would probably give the best final quality.

HatchetHaro,
@HatchetHaro@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

You could print it horizontally in ABS and then smooth it with acetone vapour.
