Any suggestions on a different instance to move to? Preferably something smaller. I switched from world to this one because of outages during the Rexxit or whatever the hell it was called.
Well, that was almost 9 months ago. Things have stabilized now. Lemmy.world is fine. I like lemm.ee. There are plenty of others if those aren’t to your taste ¯_(ツ)_/¯
Back in the early 90s I was active in the furry community, helped write parts of the codebase for FurryMUCK and FurryMUSH (I was a bearkin), and attended several of the early ‘mini cons’ that were piggy backed on mainstream events like Dragoncon.
Then in the early 2000s it started to get… weird.
I mean cons were always a hookup place for nerds, but if you were in a fursuit after then 90s it was different.
In the 90s if you were wearing a suit and hooked up with someone, you took off the suit and if things went well, had some fun. Furries and non-furry con-goers were pretty well distributed as hookups, everyone mixing with everyone.
But again around 2002 the whole scene shifted, people started asking ‘to leave the suit on’, and furries started to self-isolate as hookup partners, insisting on only partnering with other furries.
I mean by no means did I have my finger on the pulse of furry culture at the time outside of my MOO gameplay, and this shift was a big surprise to me.
Then the disgusting stuff started happening. A lot of groping, like a LOT. I mean anywhere you have cosplayers you will have some of it but DAMN was there a huge difference in number of events. People leaving their rooms covered in shit and diapers were nearly always in the furry camp.
Then was the sales of CDs filled with actual bestiality porn being run out of people’s rooms. That was the breaking point for me.
I had never really considered my fursona as a sexual entity, it was just an extension of me that let me have fun pretending to be something else for a little while. Once every prospective partner requested ‘suit on’, I was done. Around 2006 IIRC.
And I’ve watched the community get even more and more depraved, and you have no idea how angry it made me that some bestiality loving shit fetishists ruined a once wonderful community.
Stamets is incredibly boring. It’s like the writers came up with “let’s have a guy who’s gay and crazy” in their initial outline and forgot to fill in the rest of his personality. Idk what Culber even saw in him. Representation needs substance or it’s just pandering.
The other Stamets is amazing and one of the most important people on lemmy.
Well, now, they have enshrined forever in the mod logs, a record of their abuse, the URL to the images that prove it, and an invitation to come here. They have been foisted on their own petard, haha!!
Holy shit removing those top two in particular is absolutely inexcusable. They are constructive. They’re quite detailed and respectful in their criticism.
We’ve got this community, but someone needs to make a generic Star Trek and a Daystrom community outside of that instance now.
Fair enough. I have wanted to create a new DaystromInstitute, but I’m already the mod of a Plex community that I let go to hell 7 months ago because of an ongoing life event, and I’m certainly in no position to start another community, let alone mod it. (I have modded a few Reddit communities over the years, and it’s a lot of work, often not fun).

The other community doesn’t get much traffic because everyone just comes here, even though traffic should really be split between the two, and this should mostly be a meme/shitposting community.
The Star Trek community isn’t very busy yet, but we are trying to make it more so.
As far as Daystrom, Lemmy doesn’t have enough totally hardcore fans to make it work. You need people who are not only willing to pick apart Star Trek down to the creative atoms, but also to find absolutely impossible explanations for ridiculous plot points.
Daystrom is definitely not a place for me anyway, but I just don’t see it being a Lemmy thing at this point.
Ok I don’t know why, but I swear when I clicked that link earlier it was showing me the most recent posts were 8 months ago. It’s fixed itself now, and looks pretty good!
That’s giving too much credit to the website and Value Subtracted. It’s more like an afterschool church group that had too much sugar.
