KevonLooney,

Unlikability guarantees you’re doomed.

Uh Nixon? George HW Bush? Nobody actually liked them.

FDR was a spoiled rich kid who married his cousin and couldn’t even stand up on his own. He was elected 4 times because Hoover and the Republicans couldn’t fix the Great Depression. Don’t underestimate the power of one party fucking up their own chances.

KevonLooney,

Uh, no. That’s not going to happen. Why do some people think that the Secret Service is Trump’s private army? They work for Biden and the White House.

How do you think Trump was forced to attend court every day? He would rather be out golfing.

KevonLooney,

Also, people from the Mediterranean routinely traveled to Africa, and vice versa. It wasn’t all the time but it was common. It’s like traveling between the US and Latin America. They’re different areas of the world but so close that mixing is impossible to avoid. Sicily has a measurable amount of African heritage.

KevonLooney,

Russian propagandists were openly hoping for a hung jury and were visibly disappointed when Trump became a convicted felon on all 34 charges he was facing.

Hmm… sounds like some posters I read on here…

KevonLooney,

It’s probably just people who aren’t paying attention. You are correct in your analysis of the average trump supporter, but they are not a monolith. Some people can be swayed because they literally don’t watch the news.

KevonLooney,

Good luck. These people live on Manhattan. The downtown ones might have doormen. The uptown ones might live in a building with non-white people, possibly with doormen too.

Trump supporters won’t last a few hours without someone telling them to go fuck themselves back to Topeka.

KevonLooney,

Put on Law and Order FOR THE GLORY OF THE EMPIRE!

KevonLooney,

I don’t think that’s possible. First of all, they’re state crimes. Second of all, the jury has already rendered a verdict. The state courts are separate from federal for a reason, and setting aside a jury’s verdict for literally no reason is just not possible for the Supreme Court. The jury is the decider of fact, the judge is the decider of law. This jury decided that trump did indeed commit this crime, so it’s now established fact.

They would have to rule based on some error in the court process. Judge Merchan was very careful to give Trump a fair trial, so there are no grounds for appeals.

KevonLooney,

The Republican’s campaign said it raised $34.8 million from small-dollar donors in less than seven hours following the historic verdict Thursday afternoon that convicted the former president of 34 counts of falsifying business records.

Uh, does that sound real? 34 counts and $34 million? This number is just self-reported, so it could be completely made up. Knowing the trump campaign it probably is.

Why Megadonors Are Unfazed by Donald Trump’s Guilty Verdict | Money flowed into the former president’s re-election campaign from Wall Street and Silicon Valley following Thursday’s historic conviction (www.nytimes.com)

With the billionaires backing him, it’s going to be on us as individual Americans to make sure Trump doesn’t end up in the White House again. That means not just voting but talking with people around you, volunteering and donating

KevonLooney,
  1. Trump’s crimes will never be investigated
  2. Trump’s crimes will never be referred to a grand jury
  3. Trump will never be indicted by a grand jury
  4. Trump will never go to trial
  5. The judge will throw the case out
  6. The jury will not return a verdict / hung jury
  7. Trump will not be convicted on all counts
  8. Trump will not be sentenced <— You are here
  9. Trump will not be punished (jail / house arrest)
  10. Trump will appeal and overturn the verdict
  11. Trump is too old and frail to serve his sentence
KevonLooney,

Where are all the people who insisted that this would be a hung jury / acquittal? This was an easy and quick decision. I told you NYC would do this before the weekend.

KevonLooney,

I think they’ve moved on to claiming Trump will never be sentenced to anything and will appeal it forever.

This is not a complicated case. His signature was on 9 of the 11 checks and there was so much testimony linking him to the crimes. Michael Cohen played a secret tape of him and Trump discussing it!

The judge bent over backwards to make the trial fair and any appeals will probably be rejected. There’s just nothing to appeal.

KevonLooney,

I hope he’s put under house arrest and is only allowed out to go to court and see his appeal rejected.

KevonLooney,

Hung juries are incredibly rare. I think most people claiming that was a possibility didn’t pay attention during the jury selection process. A ton of people were rejected, and most of them were because they posted something on Twitter against Trump.

There were so few Trump supporters in the jury pool that it was easy to remove them. This jury seemed pretty unbiased. It just obvious that Trump is guilty.

The prosecution had:

Checks signed by Trump Business records created by Trump’s longtime CFO Pro-Trump witnesses who said he was guilty Trump’s former lawyer who set it up and has already been found guilty of the same thing Trump on tape discussing hiding the payoff Phone records where he discussed it A CSPAN video of him on the phone discussing it

It never ended. Trump didn’t even take the stand to explain anything.

KevonLooney,

People said all of those things. People are going to continue to be wrong.

KevonLooney,

If he weren’t a judge, one whiff of this would be enough to eliminate him from any jury in the country. Just on the basis of craziness and bad judgement, he should resign.

KevonLooney,

Also, if the US had a parliamentary system we might not actually vote for the president. Some systems elect their Members of Parliament, who then elects the Prime Minister.

This is a problem in some systems where people like their local representative, but don’t necessarily want that party to run the whole government. Remember the phenomenon of “Congress sucks but my congressperson is okay”? It’s harder to fix that issue with a Parliament.

KevonLooney,

Good point. But the switch from copying to innovation takes a long time. The US was basically an agrarian society until 1900, 100 years after Francis Cabot Lowell. London and Paris were centers of invention and culture.

NYC and Boston were backwaters of ignorance and people in funny animal skin hats, Chicago was just an animal skin trading post, and San Francisco was a flea infested tent village with expensive rent.

KevonLooney,

No, the reimbursement of Michael Cohen and the cover-up of that reimbursement happened after Trump was elected.

He personally signed 9 of the 11 checks and directed his company to create false documents to cover their purpose. The purpose was to help him get elected, and that’s why it’s a felony (34 felonies).

KevonLooney,

Nah. Most jurors are paying attention to the evidence. Trump supporters aren’t the lone rebels they think they are. There’s literally a mountain of evidence and the prosecutor’s closing argument was 6.5 hours long (not including breaks).

Every other person in that jury room is going to want to go home and won’t put up with someone stopping them. Even if this dude tries anything (he probably won’t), he’s going to crack by day 3.

I bet we see a guilty verdict for at least some of the charges within 3 days.

KevonLooney,

Some jurors just asked for and received a laptop from the prosecution with all the evidence on it. That means they won’t have to ask to view individual pieces of evidence, which will make this much faster.

That tells me they are interested in the evidence and that they want to get this over with. A possible quick (3 day) decision would mean they are done by Friday.

KevonLooney,

No, it doesn’t. You’re watching too much 24 hour news or something. These jurors don’t just silently vote, they discuss the case for the entire time.

Any juror is going to be asked by the others how they came to their conclusion. There’s no way to get away with it without scrutiny. Trump supporters can’t stand scrutiny, especially not with this much evidence and 34 felonies! They should convict on at least some of them. Trump literally signed the checks.

KevonLooney,

No, you’re being naive if you think one person can stand in the way of 11 New Yorkers who want to go home for the weekend.

KevonLooney,

Worse, they’re all from Manhattan and 2 of them are lawyers. If they already scheduled a Saturday tee time and the weather is supposed to be nice… I wouldn’t want to be in their way.

KevonLooney,

I told you.

KevonLooney,

Tee time early Friday, I guess?

KevonLooney,

They’re not. This is just one dude who owns a small stake yelling about it. He has no power to make it happen unless he convinces owners of at least 50% of the shares that this will make them money.

KevonLooney,

Many people have bad parents who “brainwash” them. They don’t all commit violent crimes against innocent victims. This guy was trying to instill fear to support a political position: that’s terrorism. If his mom supported Hamas and encouraged him to attack Jews, would you be so forgiving?

KevonLooney,

Yes, and an easy way to start is just to stop buying as many prepared things. Buy more commodities where they can’t jack up the price. You can make your own perfume, just like you can make your own food. It takes some time but saves you money.

KevonLooney,

Do you just take what people say on here as fact? That’s the problem, people are taking LLM results as fact.

Hamas launches rocket attack towards Tel Aviv area (www.bbc.com)

Hamas says it has launched a rocket attack towards the Tel Aviv area in central Israel for the first time in nearly four months. At least eight rockets were launched from the Rafah area in southern Gaza and several were intercepted, the Israeli military says. No injuries have been reported.

KevonLooney,

You can’t just call everyone who disagrees with you a “Zionist”. We can read comments and your responses to them. That’s exactly what extremists, like Zionists, do.

KevonLooney,

George Floyd 100% did not deserve to die, and it wasn’t a tragic mistake that killed him. That’s why his death was so shocking.

As someone who used to deal with counterfeit currency, presenting a fake bill is not a crime. The average person has no idea whether a bill is counterfeit and cops definitely don’t. There was literally no reason for Derek Chauvin (and the others) to arrest him, let alone choke him to death.

That’s why people went nuts. He was killed for no other reason than being a black man. It’s as simple as that: some people are totally fine with killing black people because they don’t see them as human.

KevonLooney,

It doesn’t matter. It’s only a crime if you know the bill is fake; and the average person doesn’t know that. Running a red light is a worse offense.

KevonLooney,

Yeah they’re not stupid, they’re selfish. So they’re not that different from some Republicans.

KevonLooney,

This is excellent stress testing for NATO weapons. It sucks for the Ukrainians that they have to be the testing ground, but it’s better than wargames to iron out the kinks.

KevonLooney,

Ignore these losers. When he is convicted, they will say “he won’t be sentenced to anything”. When he is sentenced they will say “it’s not long enough”.

This dude will probably be under home arrest with an ankle bracelet in two years. I’m only unsure of the ankle bracelet. I think the Secret Service can keep an eye on him.

KevonLooney,

how can you know that when you wake up you’re still the same person that went to sleep last night?

Because you are composed of 99.99999% the exact same molecules. When you transport, you are literally ripped apart and recreated with new molecules at the destination site. That’s how the transporter works. Your bed does not work that way.

KevonLooney,

It wouldn’t work.

A Polling Risk for Trump (www.nytimes.com)

The polls have shown Donald Trump with an edge for eight straight months, but there’s a sign his advantage might not be quite as stable as it looks: His lead is built on gains among voters who aren’t paying close attention to politics, who don’t follow traditional news and who don’t regularly vote....

KevonLooney,

Biden wins just three-quarters of Democratic-leaning voters who didn’t vote in the last cycle, even as almost all high-turnout Democratic-leaners continue to support him.

This trend illustrates the disconnect between Trump’s lead in the polls and Democratic victories in lower-turnout special elections. And it helps explain Trump’s gains among young and nonwhite voters, who tend to be among the least engaged.

Ok, so Trump is cornering the loudest people who shout their opinions at pollsters but don’t vote: basically morons. Makes sense to me.

KevonLooney,

More qualified? Without diversity, there’s a greater chance of your name being mis-written or mispronounced.

KevonLooney,

Carbon markets have recently begun expanding into oceans. Since whales’ bodies temporarily absorb carbon dioxide, the International Monetary Fund … contends that whales can generate carbon credits and are “Nature’s solutions to climate change.”

Interesting idea. I would say that the problem isn’t counting whales in this. The carbon credits are probably too cheap, and who is getting the money? If each whale generated a billion dollars a year for a tribe, I’m sure they would have less of a problem with it.

Wouldn’t this encourage supporting the whale population? Isn’t this generally a good thing? How does this hurt the whale?

KevonLooney,

To scare Taiwan into capitulating without firing a shot. “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” China is not going to invade Taiwan. They literally can’t risk damaging anything on the island. They need the people there to accept them willingly.

China is not as dumb as Russia. Their leaders are venal and power hungry, but not stupid. They know the thing that keeps them in power is economic growth. If they don’t have that, they can’t control their population. An invasion of Taiwan would put racheting sanctions on their economy, slowly strangling it.

KevonLooney,

They can both be your enemy, friend.

Didn’t you go to middle school?

Russia’s latest offensive into Kharkiv Oblast is stretching Ukrainian defenses (kyivindependent.com)

Two weeks into the offensive, one group of Russian forces is already fighting in the streets of the town of Vovchansk about 70 kilometers away from the city of Kharkiv, while the other is trying to push toward the town of Lyptsi, just under two dozen kilometers away from the city....

KevonLooney,

But Emil Kastehelmi of the Finnish Black Bird Group said that in Lyptsi, Ukrainians “used depth to their advantage. They pulled out from the most difficult border villages, and are now defending in places where they can better use the terrain.”

“Ukraine has been able to significantly reduce the speed of the attack, and Russia hasn’t been able to gain more than a few fields after their initial success,” he said.

I guess Russia will have to learn the hard way why Ukraine defeated Napoleon and Hitler. You expend valuable troops and supplies and all you have to show for it is some fields in Ukraine. And sanctions too.

They went from a three day operation taking the whole country, to “well maybe we’ll camp out in a field a few miles from the border”. You can’t defeat Ukraine, because they won’t give up. It’s literally throwing money and lives away.
