I believe their licence for Star Trek has expired so what’s already ordered is it.

Mine hasn’t arrived yet but it’s on the way.

I was surprised that Gersha Phillips wasn’t the head costume designer for season 5.

Do we know if she was tapped for that for the S31 movie instead?

StillPaisleyCat,

I have no idea what the second is, but if Marvel has hired her, they are very smart.

Some context on the Saskatchewan aspect that puts helps to understand the concerns being raised:

“Weekes also said Harrison once sought permission to bring a gun into the legislature. Harrison initially denied the allegation but resigned last week after admitting he had forgotten about the incident, which happened more than a decade ago.”

The CP photo caption says the incident happened in 2016.

If the actors’ contracts are for 7 calendar years but production is stretched out as is has been due to the pandemic and the strike, it’s hard to see how more than 5 seasons are possible without severe escalation in labour costs for US talent.

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

One gets the feeling that Paramount senior management have been paying more attention to review-bombed scores on Rotten Tomatoes, IMDb etc. and YouTubers than to actual viewing minutes and audience size.

While Nielsen stats are only for the United States, it’s clear that Paramount has been doing vastly better by Discovery than any of the naysayers have claimed.

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

Contract length is a fair point. But so is the over reliance on US SGA talent in a show that’s trying to reach a global audience and represent a future that’s diverse.

Discovery had only five seasons but in calendar years, in which contracts are written, it was seven years from production of the pilot. So, regardless of the impact of the strikes, further seasons would have required higher salaries for Martin-Green, Rapp, Cruz and Wiseman.

One has to wonder if that was a consideration in the decision on Lower Decks as well.

Also, while federal and provincial governments give significant tax credits for the ACTRA-contract labour costs of Canadian and Ontario resident actors (50%), up until Rennie joined this season the Discovery main cast were all full SGA scale, although the seasonal ‘big bass’ have all been Canadian or resident since season 2. That can make a huge difference to the overall cost.

All to say, if talent salaries were the key driver of decisions, CBS Studios should put more casting in the hands of their Canadian casting director.

One has to then of Canadian/resident main cast will also put a cap on the potential number of seasons for SNW.

It will be interesting to see whether CBS Studios will go for the tax credit when they cast the cadet roles for Starfleet Academy.

'Star Trek' Franchise Reboot: Simon Kinberg Eyed for Paramount Movie

So now this just sounds like a Trek prequel, not specifically a Kelvin prequel.

The specific point of divergence was shown in Star Trek 2009, otherwise it’s a real reboot and offside the television franchise.

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

Ok, I can buy that, but it means that it created a true parallel universe and not a branch in the Prime timeline.

This could be viewed as consistent with the Kelvin universe 24th century officer not being able to survive in the 32nd century Prime Universe.

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

But TrekMovie has one with the Breen that’s not on the StarTrek.com official site.

Seems like a quality control issue in sending out the embargoed emails.

Yes please!!!

I have absolutely been waiting for this to be released to Steam.

Finding games that I can share with our teens on Steam is challenging but important for keeping connected. So, we’re often looking for games that appeal to more than one of us. When we buy it’s 2, 3 or 4 keys. Having one for free to start would be great.

Resurgence really looks to offer the kind of role playing that makes sharing the journey in parallel fun.

The Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library doesn’t seem open to the public all the time, but it does have events it seems.

fisher.library.utoronto.ca/fisher-events

Also it has participated in Doors Open Ontario which is an annual event for a few days in May, when many publicly funded or non-profit buildings that usually have restricted admittance, are open for viewing.

These are lovely and something a child might actually play with.

Not everything should or needs to be for collectors.

On the other hand, making preschool toys for show that was in the air more than a half century ago is bizarre. I would have loved these as a small child in the 1960s but the the toys should reflect a show kids would actually be watching now.

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

The whole run is less than 8 hours total, and there’s several episodes in there that really bridge between TOS and the movies and TNG, even if they’ve been cut down for the format.

But here are a few other suggestions…

‘The Slaver Weapon’ was written by Larry Niven himself, adapting his story ‘The Soft Weapon’, and making Kzinti a Star Trek canon species.

‘The Practical Joker’ gives us the holographic simulator in the Rec Room, and the first ‘space anomaly leads to computer misfunctions and Holodeck insanity’

‘Mudd’s Passion’ gives us Scotty and the Caitain second Communications Officer Lt M’Ress in an unintended romantic twist.

Uhura gets command in ‘The Lorelei Signal.’

‘More Tribbles, More Troubles’ is an essential part of Tribble lore.

‘The Time Trap’ and ‘The Jihad’ are great for showing off a wider range of sentient species.

Sounds like you just haven’t been aware of what she’s been in.

She had a Best-supporting actress Oscar nomination in 2004 for ‘The House of Sand and Fog’ and Primetime Emmy win in 2009 for Outstanding Actress in a miniseries or movie.

It’s more the case that , as for Michelle Yeoh, older women seem to get meatier roles in science fiction and fantasy than in mainstream or art house productions.

I would love to see Shorleh come over to the Trek franchise in a worthy role. I can definitely see her standing out in the 25th century.

How do you wash a granite mortar and pestle?

A few years ago I got a Gorilla brand granite mortar and pestle. I seasoned it as directed and got quite a bit of use out of it, then I stopped cooking for a while and it got kind of…well, gross. It’s possible that I spilled something on it, but portions of the bowl and exterior are a darker color now. I guess I’m afraid...

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

We may be heathens but we always just hand washed ours with a good grease cutting liquid detergent to get the rancid oils and spices out.

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

Baking it won’t eliminate the oils or old spices, more would give you your cast iron frying pan effect.

We use a super neutral dish detergent that washes or at least soaks out in rinse water. Not one of the national name brands.

Even were this cast iron, sometimes you get to the point that you have to clean and restart to build the finish.

But others may feel differently.

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

I was thinking through what would happen should the OP follow the advice by another user which recommended baking the mortar and pestle.

Since it has a heavy film of fats,my thought is that baking at a low temp would create a finish similar to that on seasoned cast iron. I’m not thinking that would be a plus but others might think otherwise.

StillPaisleyCat,

@virtualbri really needs to see this. I know he liked one of your other laserdisc captures.

This is truly awesome, and the raw, un-upscaled analogue image data seems like a far better point of departure to reconstruct higher resolution DS9.

I hope he can see this post and thread via my tag to his Mastadon ID.

I have to ask whether you have any Voyager on LD as well…

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

Given the cost of the archival footage upgrades for the DS9 documentary ‘What we left behind’, it’s really surprising that they didn’t work from the LDs as one of their sources.

Good to know that the Voyager LDs exist even if compiling a complete set may be the challenge.

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

I’m very interested to see how they build out this species.

Given it’s so far in the franchise future, there was always the possibility he was another mixed species character, but having a connection with legacy species that’s been largely undeveloped, is a better choice.

CBS Chief Says Star Trek Remains A Priority For Paramount, Answers Why ‘Legacy’ Has Not Been Greenlit

Some interesting quotes herein.

https://trekmovie.com/2024/03/18/cbs-chief-says-star-trek-remains-a-priority-for-paramount-answers-why-legacy-has-not-been-greenlit/

@startrek

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

Actually, TrekMovie makes the case that the references in the reply to the need to ‘time things out’ for the franchise was the answer. I would parse that as their having other Star Trek franchise products ahead in the queue.

The person asking really let Cheeks off the hook though with their final question being, “Is Trek still a priority for the company?”.

No matter how specific the preceding preamble was to Legacy, the question they got to was super general and let Cheeks take it wherever he wanted.

They’ve been happily living in British Columbia all along.

If I’m recalling correctly, there was one statistic in the 1970s along the lines that there were more bald eagles living in Vancouver’s Stanley Park than in the lower 48 US states.

No effort at all to see their nests from the outdoor theatre at Malkin Bowl.

Also excruciating.

Faith of the Heart will never not be grating for me. Too American, too 90s wannabe 70s soft-rock dreary & derivative, despite being a cover by a British singer of something originally written for and recorded by Rod Stewart.

This is exactly the kind of song that made me dread hearing soft rock music at dentist’s offices or physiotherapy.

Fortunately, there is a maple syrup strategic stockpile.

Unfortunately, someone robbed it a while back.

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

Never underestimate the exasperatingly sneaky power of of a Canadian wielding “Sorry (not sorry)”.

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

The Supreme Court of Canada took a very dim view of the heist and required restitution.(SCC decision on maple syrup heist)

Such a Canadian thing.

KEY FACTS (from the linked article)

The court unanimously ruled Richard Vallières must pay the multi-million dollar fine, reversing a lower court order that only fined him 1 million Canadian dollars ($800,000).

The fine, along with another 830,000 Canadian dollar ($665,000) penalty he’s been ordered to pay under a separate court order, roughly total the 10 million Canadian dollars ($8 million) Vallières and his associates sold stolen maple syrup for in the early 2010s.

Vallières was found guilty in 2016 of stealing 9,500 barrels worth of syrup from a warehouse in Saint-Louis-de-Blandford, Quebec, that belonged to the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers (FPAQ), which tightly regulates production and sales of the region’s maple syrup.

The syrup had a market value of more than 18 million Canadian dollars ($14.4 million), but Vallières said at his trial it was sold at a lower price.

He is currently serving an eight-year prison sentence.

[DISCUSSION] The power vacuum left after the destruction of Romulus (lemmy.world)

With the dwindled population and organization of the Romulan Star Empire near the end of the 24th century, who will step up as the next big player? The Federation generally expands by diplomacy and comradery. The Klingons have had time since their civil war to get their shit together. The Orion Syndicate typically stays on the...

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

Ok, since no one else has mentioned it, I’m going to mention how the Typhon Pact formed in the Relaunch novelverse.

Different cataclysm, but divided remnants of the Romulans joined up with the Tholians, Breens and assorted others to establish a competitor to the Federation, which was seen as failing its perimeter members planets and species.

The book that goes deep into the heart of Breen space and culture is called ‘Zero Sum Game’. It’s Bashir and an old colleague sucked into spy stuff. The most awesome Captain Ezri Dax makes a significant appearance too.

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

The Relaunch novelverse is great even if an alternate timeline. The screenwriters are aware of it, and have woven some of its elements into onscreen plot lines.

David Mack who wrote this and many other well received novels was a consultant for the early seasons of both Prodigy and Lower Decks.

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

I’ve recently become aware of mulesing, an appalling practice used on Merino sheep in Australia and NZ due to a specific fly problem. The problem is that most merino wool is from those countries.

Also, most fabric generically labeled ‘wool’ is mostly merino from mulesinged sheep.

Ethics conscious knitters, crocheters and weavers are aware, and merino yarns certified as mulesing-free are on the market now.

Knowing country of origin and wool type is another reliable way to avoid endorsing this practice, but again most manufactured clothing or even fabrics will not give the necessary information.

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

I’ve seen a great amount of curmudgeonly criticism of this episode in other places.

Can’t understand it really. There really seems to be a contingent of fans that just don’t want to have fun.

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

Some of the criticisms fall in another category of beating on SNW’s alleged canon ‘violations’.

These include assertions that Chapel ‘isn’t the same person’ as she doesn’t have the same temperament/personality as in TOS, Uhura not having met or known of T’Pring before Amok Time, etc., Spock would have been ashamed to have eaten animal products (bacon), T’Pring’s ears have the wrong shape

While I can be quite critical of incoherence in plot threads or characters within a single show, especially in a single season (say in Discovery season two or every season of Picard), to me that’s a problem in how a set of writers are telling a specific story.

I’ve come to realize that the fans who just can’t get past continuity changes they can’t resolve immediately across the entire history of the franchise just aren’t going to enjoy SNW as much as I am.

I classify these inflexibilities as:

— not being open to the possibility that the characters may grow and change,

— not being open to the possibility of characters being unreliable narrators or saying things ironically in later shows (e.g., in TOS Uhura might tweak Spock about T’Pring to press him to identify who she is, even if she personally knew exactly who she was),

— refusing to accept that minor changes in timing, visual design, technology and characters are possible due to intertemporal interference as long as the Prime continuity maintains key/essential events.

In the end, hanging out here to have conversations with folks who are a bit more flexible is a better choice for me.

StillPaisleyCat,
@StillPaisleyCat@startrek.website avatar

I find the implicit assumption that everything onscreen is ‘fact’ exasperating.

More episodes than not depend on guest or recurring characters providing inaccurate, incomplete or outright deceptive information. In many cases, the plot hangs on whether the hero crew can deduce or find more evidence about what’s actually going on.

To assume that everything not directly contradicted in an episode is true is boggling.
