Me (France, based on my own approximations)

  • 2017 : 6€
  • 2024 : 9€

@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

Oh you’re 100% right, i just typed the number I had to pay, without accounting for inflation and the true cost

I would argue voting is one of the lowest forms of participation in the political life of one’s country, but that’s not a debate I’m ready to have at this hour

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

Agreed, half an hour out of one’s day on a Sunday isn’t much to at least get involved however small it is

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

Caravan SandWitch looks great, I just hope the game is not shallow

I have to catch up with the rest of the released trailers

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

Dev had to move away from unity and rebuild everything in Godot iirc

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

I’ve been trying the W40k Speed Freeks open beta, it’s a lot of fun actually, I thought it would play like a Mario Kart but it’s more akin to a MOBA, in some ways. There’s only one game mode for now but I really enjoy the insanity and aesthetics!

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

And then they cut content from D2, that was already released, and sold it back later as DLC

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

Yeah, and it completely fucked over the new player experience as well, their New Light thing in the Cosmodrome was a such a step down, people didn’t know where to begin playing the game and had no clue as to what the Red War was, despite every NPC praising you

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

I swore allegiance to Kojima after Death Stranding. His convoluted stories and endless cut scenes without the lore and characters of the game behind them, just appeal sto me.

It quite hard to be patient, cause I love Norman Reedus and I think he looks so cool he should be on ride with Norman Reedus

The details they’re laying out aren’t even reassuring, it reads like your typical f2p economic model :

  • Free Battle Pass Rewards
  • In-Game Challenges, both Daily and Weekly
  • Ubisoft Connect Challenges
  • Weapon Mastery (with regular updates)
  • Community Participation Rewards like Twitch Drops, giveaways, and in-game events.
  • Premium Battle Pass
  • Character cosmetics
  • Weapon cosmetics
  • Faction unlocks
  • Player Card Backgrounds
  • Player animations
  • Emoji packs
inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

Yeah idk why people would pay for a digital product before its release, it’s not like it will suddenly be unavailable after release, and they’ll have spent money on something they can’t own and enjoy yet

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

I played and loved many games that were taken down or abandoned (Gigantic, Dawngate, Strife, Destiny 2…) to the point where I instinctively prepare myself mentally to ‘lose’ a game if I’m enjoying it too much. This is the case with The Finals, it just feels so good to play, but past trauma has made me wiser and reminds me that it will not last, so I’m enjoying every second of it.

This game will not succeed with the bare bones marketing they’re giving it, that, and Nexon is the publisher, and also the FPS market is oversaturated so how could it take off when the other options have cemented their position. But wow, what an experience it’s been while it lasted, probably the best shooter I’ve ever played.

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

Is there a way to control the in game time when hosting a server or do you have to deal with the decay of (whatever decays) ? The game looks super fun with friends but some might be turned off if it becomes a chore

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

This is nice thanks for taking the time to write out the details!

They could, but they wouldn’t, they would organize their work to be more productive and achieve the stone moving faster.

Paraphrasing Proudhon’s What Is Property :

The capitalist, it is said, paid for the workers’ days; to be exact, it must be said that the capitalist paid as much ‘one day of work’ that he employed workers every day, which is not at all the same thing. Because the capitalist did not pay for this immense force which results from the union and harmony of workers, and the convergence and simultaneity of their effort. Two hundred grenadiers in a few hours erected the obelisk of Luqsor on its base; one cannot assume that a single man, in two hundred days, would have achieved the same feat.

Hiring 50 people to work on a project fundamentally changes the way the project is led compared to how it was by a single person, suddenly you will need additional workers to plan for the work to be done, to organize each task, to keep track of what’s being done, and whatnot. Howard claimed there were 450 people working at Bethesda, and look at the state of Starfield ; Larian Studios allegedly grew from 100 to 400 people, and look at the state of Baldur’s Gate 3 ; ZA/UM reported laying off 25% of their workforce, implying they were a team of 100, and look at the state of Disco Elysium (on release and/or Director’s Cut, the ongoing legal battle is a whole other subject), it’s a lot more complex that just numbers

I just tried Manor Lords, very promising, will keep an eye on it, but in the meantime, does anyone have recommendations for more gridless city builders ? I don’t know how common this type of game is, but I’m itching for something chill (sandbox-y?) and creative, Townscaper was super sweet, I think I’ll try Foundation next, maybe Laysara too

You’re in for a treat if you just discovered SGDQ and AGDQ, they’re super fun to follow

What kinds of games might you recommend with deep worldbuilding and interaction that aren't RPGs?

I like worldbuilding and stories, and I like when they're mixed with the interactivity of games, so RPGs seem like they should be a natural fit. Problem is, I dislike the stat-heavy, grindy progression of many RPGs.

I enjoy point & click adventures and visual novels but they're often more limited in their interactions. What kinds of game might I be missing combining the two?

@games

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

You may enjoy Control, I personally couldn’t get past the rather uninteresting gameplay and mechanics, but the lore and snippets of story you find scattered around are something else

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

I think you’re right, I was about to “leave” the early parts of the game, I had already unlocked some powers but not leveled them up too much, I should really try to get back to it though, despite feeling a little bored when playing, I just can’t forget the aesthetics

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

Yeah, but Helldivers 2 CEO described the challenges of live service games sounds a lot less interesting gotta pump those articles

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

They’ll remove the game from one’s account sunset D2, then unvault re-release it, and people will still buy it.

What apps would you love to have open-source alternatives for?

It seems like the FOSS community is continuing to grow, and FOSS apps keep getting better (Immich reallh blew my mind recently), which is a big win 😎 but there are still many apps I use that I would kill for an open source alternative. I am curious what you guys think? Are there any apps you’d love alternatives for?

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

I tried Saber (f-droid.org/packages/com.adilhanney.saber/) for a while with my fat fingers and it worked good enough for my use case, idk if it fits your needs

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

This wouldn’t fit with the gdpr, right?

Or maybe it’s completely unrelated idk

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

I don’t know how they’re hoping to find success with a reportedly 19.99 price point for a repackaged f2p game, my nostalgia is not strong enough to justify this in a landscape with an overabundance of hero based multiplayer competitive games

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

It died around 2015/2016 if I remember correctly, there was a small discord community that managed to maintain their own online server, but otherwise you wouldn’t be able to play, the Steam version had already been removed from listings

inlandempire,

And yet he cowardly backed away from a debate with Sanders

inlandempire,

I’m late because I just started watching Shogun, but Shadow Tactics - Blades of the Shogun is really good in the real time tactics genre, it was the first title released by Mimimi who went on to make the acclaimed Desperados 3 and Shadow Gambit - The Cursed Crew

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

Have you played Dead Cells? It’s a great metroidvania

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

2D game yeah ! It’s on PC (mac, linux too) ; Switch ; PS4 ; Xbox One ; and I believe they’re working on an Android port. If you decide to buy it on Steam it’s also “Steam Deck verified” and is rated Platinum (works natively “out of the box”) on ProtonDB ; seeing how other, more ressource-demanding games run on Switch emulators, I think Dead Cells won’t be an issue, it’s very well optimized in my experience !

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

Goodluck!

Frog Detective?! Absolutely disgusting, what’s next, Unpacking? You degenerate 🙃

inlandempire,

Yeah I’m at a point where I’m excited to know the latest twist on “100 cats in…” and see how many they can put out

US bipartisanship has ruined the country’s political landscape, imagine living in a democracy and considering voting for someone else than the two big names is not a good vote

Tumblr and Wordpress to Sell Users’ Data to Train AI Tools (www.404media.co)

this could not be timed worse for Tumblr which is in huge hot water with its userbase already for its CEO breaking his sabbatical to ban a prominent trans user for allegedly threatening him (in a cartoonish manner), and then spending a week personally justifying it increasingly wildly across several platforms. the rumors had...

How does tumblr keep jumping into bad decisions don’t they know their audience lmao

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

Yeah they added it for their 20 years anniversary in November, it has its own physics and came along a new surface with its own physics as well (wood, which then broke physics for existing wood making some old maps broken but that’s a long story)

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

You have 800ms snippets of a character walking or shooting in between cinematics, but you gotta be attentive otherwise you’ll miss it

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

I don’t dislike it, it’s brilliant, the epitome of SupergiantGames’ beautiful craft, but I just can’t play Hades, it released after I had already burnt out on Dead Cells, Curse of the Dead Gods, Grime, Enter the Gungeon, Blasphemous, Gunfire Reborn, and whatnot, I can’t bring myself to play it because I had already explored the genre so many times…

inlandempire,
@inlandempire@jlai.lu avatar

That’s interesting, then to me it means that whoever was in charge and made the decision to hire that many people without questioning the long term financial sustainability of such decision must be to blame
