magic_lobster_party,

I just want a game without the time pressure of seasons. I want to play games in my own pace. It’s hard to maintain an attachment to the character when the character “expires” once the season ends.

I haven’t played D4, so I’m not sure how seasons are implemented in that game, but this was a problem in D3. Once the season ends there’s little reason to continue playing with the character.

magic_lobster_party,

The game is mainly designed around season play. You’ll miss out on content if you don’t participate in seasons. The game won’t be as enjoyable either, because it’s not designed to be played that way.

magic_lobster_party,

It’s mostly to maintain user engagement. It’s a way to bring players back every now and then.

magic_lobster_party,

Well it works best if the game is actually good.

A game that does seasons very well is Deep Rock Galactic. Each season comes with fresh new content. Old seasons can be revisited if you missed them, so no stress. The new additions to the game are permanent, which adds great variety to the missions. Progress follows between seasons, so no need to create new characters from scratch.

Most importantly: the game is really good as well.

magic_lobster_party,

They’re probably inserting the ads “on the fly”. It can be finicky depending on codec, but doable.

Best way of playing Wipeout these days?

So…after watching latest Noclip video, I was having a bit of a Wipeout itch…I have a rather decent gaming computer, but I was wondering what would be the best way to play the wipeout series…was 2097 the best one? Is there a good way to get it running at decent resolution/effects these days?...

magic_lobster_party,

was 2097 the best one?

In my opinion, yes. It’s the one that best captures the feeling. It’s has that gritty industrial look and the best music.

The later ones are also good, but they’re a bit too “clean futuristic” to scratch my Wipeout itch.

First one hasn’t aged as well. Mainly because if you bump into a wall ever so slightly, you lose most of your speed. 2097 and onward are better at keeping your momentum going. I also love those spark effects that come when bumping into walls in 2097.

magic_lobster_party,

Excellent video!

I was probably 3 when I was first exposed to the first Wipeout game, and I have been a fan of it and its music ever since. Petrol from Orbital is a big influence on my childhood.

Then later we got a demo with 2097. I distinctly remember it had Body in Motion by Cold Storage. Probably the best track in the entire series.

And now I learn Cold Storage hated this kind of music when he started with Wipeout.

magic_lobster_party,

People who are capable of installing Linux are probably already aware of it. Most people when they buy a laptop is to have something that just works out of the box. Just open the laptop lid and it’s welcoming you with the setup process. Telling them how to install a live USB is already too much information.

magic_lobster_party,

Ammo is basically infinite in Eternal. Just chainsaw a zombie and out comes ammo. By the time you’re out of ammo next time you probably already got a chainsaw refill.

Weak spots are suggestions and can be ignored for the most part. Most enemies don’t even have weak spots.

Can’t argue with acrobatics.

magic_lobster_party,

I didn’t enjoy Doom 2016 as much because once you get the super shotgun and ballista, there’s few reasons to use any other weapon in the game. No need to experiment with weaker weapons when super shotgun gets the job done. Heck, even the starter pistol is obsolete after the first few levels already.

In Eternal the game encourages you to experiment with all your weapons. The starter shotgun is still a good choice even when super shotgun is in your arsenal. And with constant ammo refill the combat can also be much longer with way more enemies (which they especially make use of in horde mode). In Doom 2016 you could technically run out of ammo completely.

magic_lobster_party,

Yeah, I was tired when I wrote.

magic_lobster_party,

That skull crushing weapon is so satisfying to watch.

Judging from the trailer it looks like we will see more open arenas. Good to see they won’t try to make a repeat of Eternal and instead try new ideas. Looking forward to see how it plays out.

magic_lobster_party,

Technically the shield is a chainsaw

magic_lobster_party,

There’s the stone imps who can only be damaged with the full auto mod (or super weapons).

magic_lobster_party,

It’s an amazing game and addicting once you get into it. If you think Quake and Devil May Cry sounds like a fun combo, this is the game.

Just be aware the game isn’t finished yet. The last few levels are missing.

magic_lobster_party,

Yeah, I thought the game was good value when there was only Act 1, and now the game is more than double that.

magic_lobster_party,

It’s not always that simple. If I write a song, then I don’t want my song to be used in a big budget Hollywood production without me getting a dime.

magic_lobster_party,

Don’t underestimate how much Intel can fuck up.

magic_lobster_party,

I don’t think ARM will compete in the gaming market anytime soon, and Intel has already fucked up that market for themselves.

ARM will probably gain a sizable portion of the office laptop share instead. Many people want to bring their laptop to a conference room without the charger and all that stuff. A good battery life is more prioritized in these cases than raw power.

magic_lobster_party,

As a point of comparison, 360 has 512MB RAM. HL2 was targeting PCs comparable to PS3/360, but somehow they got it working on an Xbox.

magic_lobster_party,

It’s a bit hit and miss. Some parts are glorious. Other parts are just frustrating.

There’s too many parts that are “Oh you failed this jump? Now you need to start all over again”. I’m thinking especially on that Yoshi mission in Ricco Harbor.

Or that lilly pad bonus level on that island that you must bring Yoshi to, but Yoshi can’t swim so you need to ride those slow ass boats. Ensure you don’t miss any jump, because then you need to start all over again.

The visuals are incredible for its time. The water is one of the most beautiful on that generation.

It’s a game that could’ve benefited from being easier, or at least be more forgiving. I just want to soak in all the visuals.

New FPS Built Using Doom Tech Is Better Than Most AAA Shooters (kotaku.com)

Things aren’t looking good for me. I’m a few levels into Selaco, a new FPS out now on Steam, and I’m stuck behind a bar as a group of sci-fi soldiers unload their rifles and shotguns into my hiding spot. I’m also low on health. So yeah, a bad spot to be in. I take a deep breath and try something....

magic_lobster_party, (edited )

Started playing it and I’m liking it so far! The low health regen is very clever. Solves the problem in Half Life 1 where the player is always finishing encounters at 1 HP without the need for excessive health pickups. Now the player is guaranteed to have at least 35 HP.

The immersion is really great as well. Often I forget that all the enemies are just 2D sprites.

magic_lobster_party,

I’m not the same person, but I’ve played a few levels now. I think it’s really good, especially for being early access. Reminds me of original Half Life, so if you like that kind of game it’s a strong recommend!

magic_lobster_party,

Silver Surfer has some of the most incredible bangers ever put on a NES. RIP Geoff.

magic_lobster_party,

They probably developed, refined and scrapped 100s of ideas before they landed to the final game.

magic_lobster_party,

It uses a glitch that’s only possible on Wii Virtual Console as well. All other versions are 1x A press any%.

magic_lobster_party,

It has been featured heavily in Xbox “directs” for the entire generation, and then when it really matters they just dropped it.

    magic_lobster_party,

They will say it’s for “security reasons”

    magic_lobster_party,

This doesn’t sound like a thing enterprises are going to accept. It’s like spyware but with extra buzzwords.

I know people here love Linux, but I think most IT departments in the world would go for Apple first.

    magic_lobster_party,

If anything, it just used as justification for bad behavior. “My genocide is completely justified. It’s what God wanted!”

    magic_lobster_party,

Reddit and Twitter aren’t comparable here. I’m not bound to the fediverse just because I post here. I can still use Reddit if I want. I don’t care much if my posts aren’t seen by anybody here either.

Code hosting is a different story. It’s not ideal to host on both Github and Gitea at the same time. It’s a mess to keep track of multiple issue trackers at the same time. If you chose one you’re kind of bound to it, so you better choose the alternative that increases the chances of future success of the project.

    magic_lobster_party,

    Even the issue tracker?

HL2 is probably the game I’ve replayed the most. It’s just as amazing every time.

When I played it for the first time almost 20 years ago (gosh!) I expected all games would have this level of immersion onward. It was such a leap forward. Things I normally could expect from the real world applied to HL2 as well.

Oh, there’s roller mines hurtling towards me? Obviously I’m supposed to throw them down the cliff using my gravity gun. No explanation from the game about this. It just felt like I would do the same in the real world.

Is this immersion the future of gaming? I can’t wait to see what the future will bring!

Turns out 20 years later that HL2 was a one of a kind game. Other games might have better graphics and physics, but no game is HL2.

    magic_lobster_party,

I think you should give HL2 a chance. It can be enjoyed even without the first game. You have already played the first game a bit, so you know the deal (experiment gone wrong, aliens everywhere). HL2 takes place 20 years after the incident.

There’s fewer annoying platforming sections for instance. The puzzles also involves proper Havok physics, which is easier to manage.

The story is also a step up, with proper named characters. The baddies are also better developed and has a better reason to be the baddies.

I'm finally getting the hang of Sekiro

I’ve been playing this game off and on, starting over since it came out. I was a hardcore Bloodborne player, but also played a lot of elden ring and ds3. Sekiro never clicked, I thought it was slick and the action felt incredible but I just couldn’t get past the beginning. Finally I’ve broken through and am having a blast,...

    magic_lobster_party,

Sekiro is my favorite game. Nothing beats the sensation of the kling kling KLING effects.

    magic_lobster_party,

I already got a PC. Why should I buy another big bulky thing just to play a few extra games?

    magic_lobster_party,

And the trick involves a frame perfect maneuver.

    magic_lobster_party,

You will be liable either way. If you don’t do anything, you broke the terms of not being attentive enough.

    magic_lobster_party,

Currently playing Dark Souls 3. Haven’t played it before, so I guess it’s a good time to check it off the list. I guess I’m near the end now.

I’m a bit disappointed by its linearity. It’s way more linear compared to Dark Souls. It’s also pretty easy compared to Elden Ring. I’m just using a base build. Mostly leveling up on strength stat without much thought.

I’m still enjoying the game though.

    magic_lobster_party,

My point is that there’s usually an easier level of entry for other types of games. You aim and shoot, and you get instant feedback if you succeeded or not. You don’t need to understand advanced meta to get this, although it can help.

For many RTS games it can all be dependent on how fast you expanded your economy, not on how you play your units. You can fail the entire game because of bad gameplay early.
