Wow if I had to guess what the next zombie franchise would be I wouldn’t have picked Surgeon Simulator.

Looks like the original devs fell on hard times and sold their IPs to another company, who is now in turn selling them to the video game graveyard.

Yep. I will never vote for him again for this reason. I used to vote strategically based on my current riding, but I’m just straight NDP now.

This was a concrete and clear promise, and he 100% broke it and didn’t even try. The Liberal candidate would have basically always been my 2nd choice in a ranked system.

Now they get nothing. I hope it was worth it.

Am I the only one disappointed with how lazy this is? They put more effort into Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties than this. I have no idea why it has taken 3 years to make when it look like the original game with a translation patch running in an emulator.

I realize they’ve animated some intros and drawn some new art and stuff, but it would have been nice to get a faithful remake like SMRPG, or like The Dragon’s Trap where they redraw everything and make it widescreen but offer you the option to return to original graphics at any time.

If all they were going to do is QoL improvements and stuff like that, I would have preferred that they just don’t do the new animations and instead include Clock Tower PSX & Struggle Within with QoL improvements in one package.

The way it is it’s just not enough of an improvement over the SNES original with a translation patch to be worthwhile. Which is a shame because the people most likely to buy this are the same people who know how to get the translated SNES ROM very easily.

Good summary but you missed the part where Michel left Ubisoft and they 100% shitcanned the whole project.

Gex’s voice and lines are so iconic and specific, I hope they have every regions lines. Not having them will ruin the nostalgia for any region that’s missed.

Plus, people who know Gex from memes and YouTube will expect the US voice & lines, so you really want to cover all your bases.

EDIT - Oh it’s LRG, then judging by Clock Tower it’ll be the same games with some new art. Disappointing.

I bought a 2DS on AliExpress. It was fine, original shell but a little scratched up. JP model. One dead pixel.

$211CAD so about $150USD. I’d do it again, I didn’t end up using it much as I had plans for it that didn’t pan out but I had no issues with it.

If you wore a shirt that says “there is no god” you would likely be sent home. It’s antagonistic, regardless of how you feel on the issue.

I know if I was a 7th grader and this stupid little shit and his dickhead friends wore this into class, I would feel it was equally antagonistic, except far worse because it seeks to upset a minority that is already going through the wringer.

It runs contrary to the purpose of a school, which is to educate. Your other examples are more of a case-by-case thing, but if a Christian student said they were offended by that shirt, then the student might be asked to not wear it in the future.

I am shocked this got approved already, and unaltered too.

ScummVM, Provenance, Ignited and Folium are all stuck in review, and as far as I can tell this is the complete RetroArch with no changes or compromises.

It’s also already the best PSX emulator because it doesn’t crash with external controllers and supports hi resolution.

I just wish RetroArch in general had a better interface. The XMB interface isn’t bad on PC but on mobile it’s just so clunky.

EDIT - They also have an Apple TV version!! I’m even more shocked.

EDIT 2 - PPSSPP Standalone also launched! apps.apple.com/ca/app/…/id6496972903

I know, but the only touch optimized one is glui and it just doesn’t look good. It’s more than a skin issue too, the app is just clunky.

I appreciate that it has so many options, but if it offered just a simplified layer similar to Delta, it would be amazing. Right now it just throws too much at you for the person who just wants to just play a game.

I think the studio closures was just the last straw. Like they spent almost $100 billion and they’ve made NOTHING. Like not one goddamn thing.

Say what you will about Sony and Nintendo but they have output and they care about gaming because they have to, it’s the only way they make money.

Microsoft could shutter their gaming division tomorrow and they would save money, not lose it. Whatever exec championed the buyouts for Game Pass is clearly gone or asleep at the wheel. So the end result is they own WoW, Candy Crush and CoD that print money and a bunch of franchises that haven’t seen a good release in 10+ years.

The fact that they bought inExile, Obsidian and Bethesda and didn’t immediately start work on a Fallout 1/2 remake or an FNV sequel is evidence enough they they have no fucking clue what they’re doing. How does a company own so many studios and make no games!?

shinratdr,

The sad part is this might actually end up being a net positive in the long run. Their two biggest acquisitions were Bethesda and Activision-Blizzard, one company that has started their decline and another that is deep into it.

Microsoft pissing away $100B to buy these companies only to turn around and kill them 5-10 years later will end up breaking up the gaming conglomerates that have killed the western games industry. The only sad part is all the people that will lose their jobs and all the classic IP that will be squandered.

No shit it loses money. It’s a service. Not everything has to be run at a profit. Bring weekend and the return of direct to door delivery. Provide better shipping rates and services, combine parcel and mail delivery. Only deliver mail when critical items arrive or with packages.

I feel like there are creative ways to balance it, but they’ll always run at a loss if they have to cover this giant country and provide equal services. I’m fine with that, it’s a great use of taxes.

Has Microsoft put out a single worthwhile AAA title in the entire console generation? I bought an Xbox Series X after the Bethesda acquisition and I’ve used it once to boot up Starfield and then quit after 15 minutes when I realized it was boring as hell.

They have this uncanny ability to spend more money on acquisitions and then completely stall the output from that company until every game blows.

They had one good franchise that they didn’t run into the ground, Halo. And after they got control of it they killed that too. They own half the industry now and I feel like they produce less games than ever before.

I feel like they’re going to get bored, kill their games division in 5 years and the whole industry will have to rebuild.

I hope Valve never does this. Tons of games on Steam only work with community fixes, it sets a bad precedent if they pull them because they don’t work in their official state.

It’s better to have them then not, I would just force a disclaimer during sale for abandoned titles that most players have reported that the game does not function without community patches.

Despite you feeling like they NEED mods to be playable, the vast majority of people play Bethesda games with no mods whatsoever, most on platforms that aren’t even capable of open modding. If you wonder why Bethesda is lukewarm on mods in recent years, look no further than this sentiment.

How dare they update their game with free bug fixes, performance improvements, features and improved graphics? Their video game I bought on sale 10 years ago for $6 is an operating system with a stable, documented API, and making that comparison doesn’t make me look insane and wildly entitled. Who cares about the 100% of people who will receive a better game for free because of this, what’s important is the 1% of people who will have to rewrite their mod so that 10% of players can use it!

Why on earth would Bethesda not want to cater to this unprofitable, demanding & entitled crowd of out-of-touch nerds who think everyone tweaks everything to hell before even trying it? I’m at a total loss.

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

I’ve seen tons of them. I never denied the issue. It’s real, and it’s very annoying. But using the fact that AI generated articles exist to justify spouting uninformed opinions based on nothing but a headline is ridiculous.

Instead of reading a headline, assuming it means what you think it does and being wrong, then writing a comment based on that wrong opinion, you could at least glance at the article. You have enough time to write an angry comment, you can’t spend 10 seconds glancing at the article to see if it has any info that the 5 word headline might not have covered?

Or alternatively, if it’s such an imposition, then just don’t comment.

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

I saw that you were a different person, I don’t see how that’s relevant. You chimed in saying you also didn’t read the article because of your opinion that most articles now are AI generated nonsense not worth consuming. Nothing in your first comment said you didn’t agree with him at all.

I’d get it if the guy you replied to said “read the article, it’s super interesting!” and then you said “I didn’t read it because most text articles are AI generated nonsense so maybe that’s why they didn’t bother either” to add perspective.

But that wasn’t what happened. The OP spouted a nonsense opinion based off what he thought was going on, which was wrong, the next guy told him to read the article before running his mouth, and you chimed in to say “who reads articles, it’s all AI generated nonsense anyways now” which to me, comes off as a defense of spouting uninformed bullshit based off zero information.

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

I’m not defending them for making broken games. I’m stating a simple fact which is that most people play them as is, and patching years after release is a good thing that should be encouraged.

I’m also saying that people who use lots of mods are fickle and when they have this attitude, aren’t worth supporting at all.

shinratdr,

Loblaws operates their primary banner stores in all the most populous areas of Canada, and they operate grocery stores under some sort of banner in every province and territory.

Safeway is American and only operates in Western Canada, Save-On-Foods is also in Western Canada only. Both are much smaller than Loblaws.

So basically, scale & name recognition. I know people hate the “GTA is the centre of the universe” thing as well, but Loblaws is the “expensive” grocery store in southern Ontario, which contains our national capitol and the capitol of our biggest province, which is also the HQ of all of our national newspapers and public TV station. So it will get special legislative & media attention too.

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

Agreed, I’m just explaining why Loblaws gets undue attention. Sobeys is half the size of Loblaws and Loblaws has a way bigger presence in Southern Ontario.

I don’t think they get off the hook exactly, I just think journalists go for the bigger target. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen a headline like “Your iPhone is about to explode and kill you!” and it turns out it’s literally about any device with a lithium-ion battery. It’s just to grab attention.

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

That’s not how I interpret that. I think they’re just saying that if your app does offer digital goods, you have to use IAP. Not that any app in this category has to include IAP to be accepted.

Apple is protecting its bottom line here. In other words if Nintendo was to release a classic arcade, they don’t just get to circumvent IAP rules in non-DMA countries because of this change. But I don’t see any wording that says apps cannot forgo offering any IAPs and just allow you to add content via Files like all other apps do.

If they intended your definition, they wouldn’t leave it vague. There would be a specific provision that says “Apps cannot access files or software from the system, or offer an in-app browser or other online resource to add files to the app.”

Moreover, this change is specifically targeted at Riley Testut and AltStore, which was founded so he could distribute his emulator, Delta. Your interpretation would fully prevent that app from being offered, so I really don’t think that is what Apple was intending.

Lack of JIT is crippling though, hopefully that will change soon.

They’ve opened a door that basically nobody could walk through and the people who could walk through it wouldn’t need to because they could just distribute the ROMs with the emulator to begin with, it’s business as usual for Apple.

Actually this also isn’t true, emulators were banned period. This was partially to avoid legal issues and also because if they didn’t, the App Store would be flooded with emulators in wrappers distributing single titles.

So technically, this does allow the use case of a classic developer offering all their old titles in a a single arcade app, which was not the case before.

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

I think that’s fair, I basically agree with the first comment on that Ars article:

App Review guidelines are always so vague and open to interpretation. We need a brave developer to submit a retro console emulator that can load arbitrary files to App Review and see what happens.

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

Two emulators have launched and they both can open arbitrary ROM files as expected.

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

Yeah MacRumors reached out and apparently Apple clarified that it was pulled for the GBA4iOS copyright issue and not anything to do with ROMs.

Agreed, it’ll be a long journey. But this is a step in the right direction, and I’m sure it will be an ebb and flow rather than just a flood of existing iOS emulation projects coming to the App Store.

For example; we won’t see Delta because of Riley’s competing store, and we probably won’t see Provenance because of all of the JIT stuff they built that will have to be removed for an App Store approved build.

I will be pretty upset if they just end up reversing their position. Google Play has had tons of emulators for years with no issues, with the exception of yuzu which is hardly surprising considering that’s a current gen console. I think the pressure at this point is more imagined.

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

Oh I guess I was wrong too. Delta is already launched on the App Store.

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

Sony is hinting at a mid-gen refresh. That’s far from “nearly done”. Also the response to that news has been lukewarm at best. We just started getting PS5 exclusive titles this year. Nobody is in a rush to upgrade when almost nothing on the PS5/XSX generation has felt hamstrung by the hardware.

I think if they drop a PS5 Pro it will bomb, outside of a few enthusiasts who want better 4K60 performance, and those people would most likely spend the money upgrading their gaming PCs instead.

This truly is the first generation where we’re 4 years in and it feels like we’ve barely scratched the surface. IMO we have another 4 years with the PS5, plus a 2-4 year overlap with the PS6 in terms of support.

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

Yes but what about the horrible things Biden is doing that Trump will also do plus a fuckton more?

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

Yes, as opposed to what we already have now.

Lots of people in politics in Canada are not independently wealthy. Their job is their primary source of income.

The House GOP just gave Biden’s campaign a huge gift: Roughly 80 percent of House Republicans just lined up behind a plan to cut Social Security and ban all abortions (www.vox.com)

Donald Trump would be on track to win a historic landslide in November — if so many US voters didn’t find him personally repugnant....

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

Obama floated a single-payer option for healthcare, he was stopped by Republicans. People also need to realize that the Democrats scraping by means they have to compromise to survive.

You want them to do more? They need a mandate, not a razor thin slice. The Republicans have gerrymandered the fuck out of your country and made it so that even when they aren’t elected, they can control or block everything. They’ve made it impossible for Democrats to get a landslide, blocked absolutely everything they can, stirred up as much voter apathy as possible, so that even when they lose, they win. And you’re buying right into it.

This is also why everyone should vote Democrat. You only have two parties in your country. If the Democrats always win because the Republicans are too right wing, they will forced to abandon their most repugnant social policies to save the golden goose, tax cuts and cutting social programs.

This will force Democrats to move left to differentiate themselves, and so forth. Short of electoral reform which will never happen, it has to become political suicide to be against abortion, LGBTQ issues, etc like it is in other countries.

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

Stopped by republicans and republicans cosplaying as Democrats. Is that better?

Point is, slim majority at best. Look to any parliamentary democracy to see what a real majority is.

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

With desperation, shouldn’t that really be $10 by now?

shinratdr,
@shinratdr@lemmy.ca avatar

I’d be careful to read too much into this. If they wanted it to be successful, it would have been Raid: Shadow Legends or Genshin Impact level promoted, especially with $140M sunk in dev.

This seems like they had no confidence in the finished product so they didn’t even bother to market it, just shat it out to app stores probably to meet contractual obligations and it will be gone soon.

Either that or there is some behind the scenes nonsense happening preventing it from being marketed. Think something like Will Smith having it in his contract that it has to release and giving him 25% of sales, for example.

But for something to cost that much and bomb that hard, it’s essentially impossible without them basically cutting their losses before launch and expecting it to fail. It’s the mobile game equivalent of the “lowest grossing movie”, basically something that was only released because it has to be, and not a true reflection of product quality. Like I’m sure it sucks, but is it THAT much worse than 99% of mobile trash? Probably not.
