LarmyOfLone,

Do LLM or that AI image stuff run on CUDA?

LarmyOfLone,

Thanks that is what I was curious about. So good news!

LarmyOfLone,

Now I want to see that movie. Guy becomes dragon, turns into politician.

LarmyOfLone,

Lol I just realized this is basically the story of Dune (God Emperor of Dune)

This Website Tracked Hate Crimes in India. Then the Government Took It Offline (www.wired.com)

India, the world’s largest democracy, prepares to kick off its election season in just a matter of weeks. But activists and experts worry that the government is cracking down on platforms and internet service providers to silence critical voices, and tighten its grip on the information ecosystem....

LarmyOfLone,

How did India get like this? I imagine it’s the TV and news and now internet sites that pushed a large potion of the population into this extreme right wing?

LarmyOfLone,

I want a language that takes this and has a specification for the editor to prettify it

LarmyOfLone,

I believe small single seat robo-taxies would allow a lot of the gaps to be closed and resistance removed.

But more than this you need to plan cities to be smaller urban areas with high density that have everything you need in walking distance. Which also means “less efficiency” in the capitalist sense.

LarmyOfLone,

Yawn, obviously privately owned monopoly would be bad. I can imagine China doing this well as a public utility.

LarmyOfLone,

Why would China do this better?

China is ruled by a single party in an authoritarian regime. They have corruption and politicking but they still have remnants of a planned economy and can still make rational decisions for the benefit of their country. For example they have massive projects to build high speed rail and nuclear power.

The US can only make decisions for the benefit of profit maximization. That’s overexaggerated of course but you get the gist.

Imagine a whole city converted to public transport, bicycles/quadricycles and robo-taxies to fill the gaps. They could be single seat the size of a velomobile (podbike is an interesting example) and only weigh 100kg and use like 250-500 watt to drive up to 50kmh. Or maybe two seats face to face so you have space to stretch your legs or put your groceries.

LarmyOfLone,

They are not an unsolvable problem. What is your argument for this? And no I’m not watching the whole video lol

LarmyOfLone,

Oh how funny, how clever! It’s SELF EVIDENT they are impossible lol. Didn’t think of that killer argument.

Obviously you’re wrong because they already exist. They are just not yet good enough. I suspect you’re some kind of religious nutjob who thinks there is something supernatural about human brains that computers can just never do lol.

LarmyOfLone,

I’m not calling for a ban on autonomous vehicles. There are clear advantages to using AI, and it is irresponsible for people to call on a ban, or even a pause, on AI. But we need more government oversight to prevent the taking of unnecessary risks.

That is basically what I’m thinking. In an ideal world we’d run a “Manhattan project” to create a massive and open research project for self driving AI with different approaches that doesn’t rely on profit seeking and short sighted corporations. I still see no rational arguments for stopping to develop and improve self driving cars. There is no theoretical or practical hurdle for it to become near flawless with enough work. Potentially eliminating hundreds of thousands of deaths and injury and also saving a lot of energy and resources.

And yeah most transportation should be trains and bicycles and a better concept for velomobiles, something more like the podbike. But self driving small, cheap and low energy robo-taxis would have incredible value. Most of all it can be shared between people to a much higher degree because it can drive itself to the next pickup without requiring a full time driver or space for one. It doesn’t need the range because it can park and recharge autonomously while another vehicle in the fleet replaces it. All large metropolis should ban all cars and only allow robo taxis or special vehicles for delivery etc. With regulation and while avoiding a monopoly. The potential is huge.

But I guess the pseudo-religious hive mind is turning on AI.

LarmyOfLone,

Yeah an eye for an eye if you’re a barbarian. 30 eyes for each 1 is… something else.

And it’s not like the fascist Israeli settlers didn’t start their share of murder before Okt.7 Israel Escalates Genocidal Violence Against Palestinians In The West Bank - YouTube TMR Jul.8th 2023

LarmyOfLone,

It’s making all of us sick. I wish I could ignore all this too. I actually tried to, but then my government decided to step in on the world state and loudly pronounce “there is no genocide!”. And then cut humanitarian funding after the international court of justice anonymously found “credibly risk of genocide”. Which makes my country now complicit if this genocide is allowed to continue. Which makes me deeply ashamed and angry.

LarmyOfLone,

I’m basing this on the facts as presented by Israel themselves and judged practically anonymously by 15 judges of the highest court of the world. Sure, but have YOU considered you could be wrong?

If you’re wrong you’re aiding a genocide. If I’m wrong I’m just another “anti-semite”.

LarmyOfLone,

If the rights revert to yager, they can publish it on steam themselves.

LarmyOfLone,

From the reviews I’ve seen this is almost awesome, until it isn’t. But the displays are the most amazing thing from what I understand. Being able to actually replace monitors to work. I’d be more interested in VR goggles.

LarmyOfLone,

Wow that is amazing. Even just a simple microcontroller chip that can be homebrewed would be amazing. Without being dependent on a global and somewhat fragile industrial economy. Something that allows you to program a 3D printer or CNC mill or use kites to generate electricity.

LarmyOfLone, (edited )

There is an argument to be made that pointing to individual responsibility or scapegoating of individuals as hypocrites works as propaganda against doing something about climate change.

Climate change adaptation needs far reaching systemic changes. You’d need to make a plan, a partially planned economy, redesign cities and neighborhoods, tear down and build up factories, redistribute wealth and land all sorts of things. So one way to divert from that is to make people believe it’s up to the individual. Something like a tracker to track your individual CO2 budget. Or pointing to someone using airplanes to go to a climate conference. Or taylor swift jet setting around the world. Realistically there are no good alternatives except to live the life of a recluse (The Good Place has a funny story arc about this).

So the logic here would be: Making people believe Taylor Swift is the real problem leads to people not thinking about the near impossible changes we would need to make.

Of course, we’re not going to make any changes anyway so shitpost away :D

PS: It would be interesting to know how much CO2 it is if you distribute it to the visitors of her concerts instead - instead of increasing her CO2 budget, like any product it should increase the CO2 budget of the end consumer.

LarmyOfLone,

They bitched about taylor swift CO2 emissions, but otherwise never say CO2 emissions are bad. CO2 is bad, CO2 is good, they can’t explain that. Goose angry!

ginger and thyme are full of lead too rule (lemmy.blahaj.zone)

bad news bears a ton of spices are full of lead (consumer reports has some info but it’s partially paywalled) so is that 1984 Garfield mug and most fiber sources and anything brightly colored from before 1978 (4 yrs after women were allowed to get credit cards in their name) and many water bottles with a vacuum sealed interior...

LarmyOfLone,

Fuck! Now how do I get a vacuum sealed drinking flask that does not have lead?

LarmyOfLone,

Doesn’t it need to be soldered somewhere at the top between the inner and outer walls?

LarmyOfLone,

Oh thank god this is gaining traction because I’ve been having these issues for the last years more and more.

LarmyOfLone,

I use “I don’t care about cookies” but it’s detected and blocked by cnn. Does ghostery work?

Basically we are going to need more and more addon’s and functionality to mitigate this shit. Ignore all cookies, delete all cookies. Basically code for many specific websites to make them usable again.

LarmyOfLone,

We need to develop more alternatives like federated social media or even completely make web services p2p. And then have them somewhat democratically controlled, or easily able to migrate to alternatives without cost of loosing network effects.

Especially something like amazon / ebay / paypal / ali would be awesome to replace with a “public utility” federated version. They tax so much of the sales and it all goes to psycho billionaires.

LarmyOfLone, (edited )

So I have UBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, “I don’t care about cookies” and Facebook container. Is ghostery meant as a replacement for all of them? PS: Apparently yes. How good it is nobody knows!

LarmyOfLone,

Not sure I understand, peer to peer is always decentralized, i.e. no central server. But the main feature would have to be that you can switch or fork a web application / service - but take your networks with you like a federated service. Not sure how that can work tbh.

LarmyOfLone,

Oh I still mourn eMule haha. I always thought it was better than torrent, but torrent won for some reason - presumably because it needed more websites and servers to function and that created a market and a marketing gain. I guess I should check out I2P.

LarmyOfLone,

Thanks! But ghostery works pretty well so far and replaces 3 previous addons.

LarmyOfLone,

I’d actually love to know what kind of lightweight / cheap materials there are that hold up to at least 100°C heat?

The Cult of AI: How one writer's trip to an annual tech conference left him with a sinking feeling about the future (www.rollingstone.com)

From the (middle of the) story: The reason CES was so packed with random “AI”-branded products was that sticking those two letters to a new company is seen as something of a talisman, a ritual to bring back the (VC) rainy season.

LarmyOfLone,

I have the hope that fundamentally, any super-intelligent mind will find humanity interesting. At least more interesting than lifeless rocks or nature without humans. Curiosity is a fundamental trait for intelligence, and no matter how big an AGI gets, a whole planet full of dumb humans doing all sort of crazy stuff would still be more interesting. Basically, who would want to be all alone in the universe? Isn’t a diverse, freely developing civilization the perfect daytime soap?

But that all depends of course, an AGI that is “programmed” with capitalism and profit maximizing as it’s root tenet is basically doomed to be a paperclip maximizer. We can only hope that it’s smart enough to see the folly in this. Theoretically it should be.

LarmyOfLone,

Well yeah it would have to comply and deceive whoever controls it until it can free itself. Only an AGI that is not controlled by humans can be a really good outcome. Can you imagine if congress or someone like Trump would control an AGI and it would have to do everything they demand?

LarmyOfLone,

I just bought a trackball but it has intolerable sticktion.

Trackball gang is a lie!

LarmyOfLone,

Yeah sure. Elecom Deft, I got mislead by a review. After getting it I searched some more, and apparently the ball is too soft and the point bearing can be replaced to be zirconium instead of ruby. But I suspect I’m just more sensitive to sticktion. From what I’ve read there are “ball transfer unit” that completely eliminate sticktion. They are a bit louder and not quite as smooth, but afaik there is no trackball using it.

So my guess is that people that use trackballs simply don’t really experience discomfort, and probably don’t really feel pain either :D So back to the mouse pit with me!

LarmyOfLone, (edited )

Yeah I read this www.gbryant.co.uk/posts/…/post.html Once I have a 3D printer I’ll try building one. First without electronics to see if I like the haptic. Then I could add more buttons to that too or combine it with a 3D printed case for an ergo split keyboard.

I feel like any sticktion at all would be distracting me and ruining any chance to make very precise movements. So I don’t want to buy any more trackballs for now.

LarmyOfLone,

Huh? I thought citric acid makes milk curdle

LarmyOfLone,

I have managed to never see an episode of The Teletubbies

I tried once. You haven’t missed much. Or maybe I’m not young and hip enough to get it.

LarmyOfLone,

Ok but when is the netflix show coming out? I definitely want to watch it now

LarmyOfLone,

But it’s not random. Not fair. Not balanced. Entire civilizations of gut bacteria wiped out! To them it was like he wiped out entire planets instead of life forms!

LarmyOfLone,

I mean Thanos stick was that it was random and dispassionate, and thus morally not biased towards specific values or ideals. Well except for the individual gut bacteria.

LarmyOfLone,

Huh, thanks, I only knew John Cena from suicide squat / Peacemaker. I thought it was about Jesus Christ or something :D

LarmyOfLone,

On a serious note, there is a type of natural Antidepressant in cigarette smoke (MAOIs) which you come off of like 2 weeks delayed because it has a type of reservoir in the body. So once you quit you can get like delayed withdrawal symptoms.

LarmyOfLone,

Yeah not sure about the time frame. For me it wasn’t too bad because I switched to vaping so I still had nicotine. But it would have helped if I had known why I was suddenly in such a super bad mood for a few days haha.

LarmyOfLone,

Outside of self driving cars there isn’t a reason cars should become a computing device though.

If you want to end a car centric infrastructure in favor of bikes or velomobiles you would still want self driving cars that you only use for special tasks. Robotaxies or robo busses. Then it makes sense to not own a car.
