Followup on the other person’s response - I don’t actually know of any modern desktop distro that doesn’t support KDE. That’s not because distros go out of their way to package KDE, but simply because at the end of the day, KDE is simply a fullscreen app (with a heck of a lot of functionality), and if you can compile code, you can compile and run KDE.
I’m interviewing for a software dev job currently (it’s in the initial stages). If things work out, I’d absolutely prefer a work laptop with Linux installed (I personally use PopOS but any distro will do), a Mac will be second choice, but I absolutely cannot tolerate Windows, I abhor it, I hate it… (If all computers left...
Last 3 jobs I’ve worked at, I made it sure they understood I needed a Linux laptop to work. They all offered MacBooks (and I made the mistake of taking the MacBook once), but as long as it’s a good company (i.e. no removed IT department) they’ll allow it
Hello, I’m currently using GPT4All on Debian, I was wondering, how do you get the AI to do whatever you want? I’m using the Nous Hermes 2 Mistral DPO model.
So the thing with Debian and any Debian based distro like Ubuntu or Linux Mint is there is no big centralized software repo like the AUR. Yes there is the apt repository but if you want something that’s not in there, get ready to read the documentation or follow random guides....
Today the KDE Community is announcing a new najor release of Plasma 6.0, and Gear 24.02. KDE Plasma is a modern, feature-rich desktop environment for Linux-based operating systems. That software played a much bigger role back in the day (i.e Konqueror’s. KHTML was forked by both Apple and later Google for Safari and Chrome), so it’s kind of a proud legacy. Konqueror is deprecated though. The other apps are useful for KDE mobile.
But the real reason people work on them is “cause they wanna”
LMMS 1.2.2 SF2 soundfonts no longer work in Wine 9.1
This is actually a pretty interesting fix, given that LMMS (which is Linux-first) has an optional dependency for Wine because so many 3rd party components are Windows only.
I’ve given up giving people sleep tips on Lemmy. You go into any detail or suggest they have to change their habits, and they react like you killed their dog.

Neither Canonical"s Snapstore, nor Flathub manually verify apps. They’re both similar to the Play Store or App Store where it’s managed by the app developer.
While it looks like OP got it sorted out, all their comments suggest they’re running into complex issues that are solved by the “bloat” software they’re trying to avoid.
Feels like they’ll quickly proclaim “Linux doesn’t work” and go back to Windows.
Pro-tip OP: The 800mb of packages that get installed alongside your first KDE or Gnome software is not “bloat”, they’ll be common libraries you dodged installing when you gave yourself an X11 server with no DE
I’ve been an IT professional for 20 years now, but I’ve mainly dealt with Windows. I’ve worked with Linux servers through out the years, but never had Linux as a daily driver. It’s more like Linux is a pain in the ass, especially for IT professionals.
How many people are trying to use 4 monitors with weird configurations and admin software? Most people open up their laptop lid and run some programs, that’s about it.
Point in case, much like OP I do personally use 2 monitors + Nvidia GPU + LLM and it worked out of the box on Arch Linux, but Wayland crashes my setup so I need to be aware of that.
Proton is only meant to be run inside the Steam container. It does a lot of custom stuff that causes weird bugs when used outside Steam.
Glorious Eggroll was fed up with people using GE-Proton outside of Steam and reporting bugs, so he made Wine-GE so people could get all the fixes but run it outside of Steam

One of my issues at the moment is cross managing different workstreams particularly with personal projects which are more in the “if I have time category”.
