I guess the economy really is doing great. Which is somehow worse, because if this is what a good economy looks like I don’t want to imagine what a bad one looks like.

Two thirds of people can’t handle a $500 expense. Three quarters don’t have a month of expenses saved. And a third of people making over $100,000 a year are living paycheck to paycheck. (Source 2023)

So maybe the problem isn’t that the economy is broken and needs fixed, but that it’s working correctly and needs replaced.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Once you get that fabled six figures you start doing things like getting married, buying a house, and starting a family. Child care is expensive. Health care for children is expensive. Houses are expensive, especially maintenance.

If someone has a family of four and is making $100,000 a year I can definitely see them living paycheck to paycheck.

Great, now they just need to make an EV that I want and can afford. That Venn diagram has no overlap.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

There are already EVs that are (almost) in my price range. The problem is that I don’t like them. I don’t really like any of them that are outside of my price range either.

Conservatives wouldn’t create libraries at all.

Liberals will create libraries by contracting it to private companies who mismanage and embezzle.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

I think there should be libraries for all sorts of things. For example, everyone on my street has their own lawnmower, trimmer, etc. And very rarely do people mow their lawns at the exact same time. It would be a lot more efficient if there was a place to check out the lawnmower to mow your lawn and put it away for someone else to use.

I’ve lived in a rural area and my neighbors were always happy to lend me something if I needed it. If I needed a truck to haul wood I could just borrow one, or even get it delivered.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

how do elders deal with the requirement to drive a car to get groceries, etc? Isn’t that like super duper dangerous?

Judging by some folks I’ve seen driving around with oxygen tubes in their noses: They just drive. And, yes, it is dangerous.

I like that but I still don’t know why we can’t just all use paper and have the count take a little longer. I’d much rather the count be accurate than fast.

Plus mail-in voting is better because I can take my time and do some research and also vote without pants.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Those ballots were overly complicated, too, and built to be counted by machines like a punch card. I think if they had been using paper with boxes that you can fill in they would have had fewer problems. For example, a lot of people ended up voting for Buchanan for president and Democrats in other races, which is just weird.

And if you’re a slaughter-happy government you gladly oblige them because it will keep your population scared and voting for you.

Bibi and Hamas have a long history together for this reason. They’re two sides of the same shit coin.

Why Gaza Won’t Cost Biden the Presidency (newrepublic.com)

"Despite these polls and the passions raised by the war with Hamas, it is easy to exaggerate the power of Gaza as a motivating issue for voters eight months from no-win November. History suggests that foreign policy issues end up as a minor motif in presidential politics unless American soldiers are dying in combat as they were...

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

unless American soldiers are dying in combat as they were in Iraq and Afghanistan in 2004

And even then we’ll re-elect the asshole who sent them there.

American politics is so fucking broken I’d weep if I weren’t dead inside from seeing this happen over and over again. And the worst part is that people here actually want this shit.

The time to have a meaningful vote is in primaries

People keep saying this but nobody I’ve voted for in the primaries has won going all the way back to Kucinich.

I’m beginning to think it doesn’t actually work.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

I’m going to over-over-simplify, but the reason for those numbers, is that our left has failed at serving the rights and interests of the people, and then has been cannibalising itself, getting corrupted, and losing members for at least 15 years.

Yet another country where this sort of thing happened: A feckless, corrupt, out-of-touch left loses to a douchebag on the right that everyone hates. It happened in the US, it happened in Argentina, and it keeps on happening in Britain, and I’m sure there’s a bunch of other countries I’m forgetting.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,

Deep down, every one of us knows tik tok is a power nobody can or should be trusted with.

I disagreed with you up until this point. You’re exactly right about this.

The problem is that nobody should have this kind of power. But our government thinks this kind of power is just fine as long as it’s a US company they can control.

If nobody should have this power than nobody should have this power. Not China. Not Musk. Not Zuckerberg. NOBODY.

But we have a feckless, ineffective government written by racists 250 years ago and this is literally all they can do.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Most companies in all industries should be broken up.

Can you recommend a remote area of Australia that’s not terribly prone to fires and has good Internet? I may have to join you in November.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah but that’s okay because they’re American, right?

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

If they had happened to write a good privacy law that happened to prevent most of Tik Tok’s abuses, I’d have way less of a problem with it because then US companies who do the same shit would have to follow the same rules. But instead we let Zuckerberg and Musk do the exact same shit without repercussions.

But we have a government that’s basically carriage with a steam engine bolted on plus a V8 and also rockets and the thing is broken beyond repair and we just have to wait until most people realize that to get out because they didn’t install emergency exits.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

Because the bill lets them ban anything that they want, not just TikTok. All the have to do is assert “foreign influence” and they can block, censor, or force sale to “American interests”.

How long until this is used against a Fediverse instance?

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,

I remember seeing them abused in my university computer lab. People would print 50 page documents, see they screwed something up, trash the whole thing, and then print again.

Keyboards, monitors, mice, computers, and network switches would come and go but those tanks would just keep rolling. Plus we could program rude messages on the screens via the web interface, which was fun.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,
@Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world avatar

All of those are good ideas to fix it, but we can’t make those changes with the system as broken as it is.

I think the biggest thing to help turnout would be acknowledging that nothing is going to get done, and that we want a government that just makes nice noises since we clearly can’t get one that actually works. Like you said: You’d take this sort of grandstanding over Trump any day.

It’s like a mechanic putting in some Sea Foam cleaner to get rid of the knock over doing a full engine rebuild, which we can’t afford. Yeah, it’s gonna break down eventually but at least you don’t have to deal with the noise. It’ll break down eventually, but for now you can at least hear NPR.

A lot of the fediverse is in an echo chamber where America is actually a progressive country. It hasn’t been, at least since Reagan but probably since Nixon or even Eisenhower.

Semi_Hemi_Demigod,

Yeah, that should probably be a $50 burger. The last time I hung out with guys like that it was $15 though.

And with all the cattle deaths in Texas because of the fire it’s like $10 of ingredients.

The “new growth” part is because the trees are harvested from farms as soon as they’re big enough. This is as opposed to “old growth” where the trees are more mature and stronger.

It’s not just the difference between kilo- and kibi-. It’s also the difference between bits and bytes. A kilobit is only 125 eight-bit bytes, whereas a kilobyte is 8,000 bits.
