I really think these MAGAt types are feeding off Boomer-era Cold War trauma, milking geriatric delusions for all they’re worth. Think about it, how many Americans under 50 are daily concerned about communism? For most of our lives it has been a complete joke, there has been literally no reason to think communism was going to supplant capitalism in America, in any way. It’s always like “oh communism, yeah sure I’d love to live in Cuba, China, or North Korea heh”.

I think a more valuable and relevant lesson would be the history and dangers of authoritarianism, anti-democratic politics and gestures, but maybe that hits a little too close to home for the MAGAts?

IMO, as depressing as the thought is, we are rapidly transitioning/declining to a post-Constitution America. It makes sense, because conservatives have never really embraced the notion of a secular document as the law of the land, which can be used to shield individuals and minorities from their abusive moralistic patriarchal regimes. Now they have a chance, many chances in fact, to “right the wrongs” they suffered as a matter of enlightened compromise made in good faith. And we are seeing it everywhere.

Well the Christofascist Speaker admitted that perpetuating chaos and linking it to Biden is their best shot in November. So everything is going according to plan. Democrats can say they tried, Republicans can blame the fallout on Biden, and the rest of us non-politicians lose as usual. Rural America is mostly a wasteland. It’s either where people of means deliberately choose to live away from society, or it’s people who are too ignorant, poor and/or drug-addled to have much choice. Neither group is going to be left-leaning… and that’s why when you look at electoral maps, you see all that red.

Pick a highway, any will do, travel along it and tell me what you see. I already know. One little failed town after another. They might have a dive bar or ancient gas station, but most commercial buildings will be long abandoned. If you need anything, you’ll have to find a decent city with a generic walmart, dollar general, mcdonalds, etc. Long gone are the mom-and-pop grocers, general stores, etc.

The irony is these are solid red Republican districts. Cities have major problems too, but they are full of action; plans, projects, hopes of a better future. There is no future for the average rural American.

They are frustrated and angry, as well they should be. Too bad they can’t see the forest through the trees.

Well the police can declare an unlawful assembly at any time for any reason, which tends to stir up even peaceful crowds. Not to mention being face to face with militarized thugs in riot gear, drones, helicopters, armored vehicles, mounted police, tear gas and “non-lethal” rounds. If I had a gas cannister lobbed at me, why wouldn’t I toss it right back. Fuck em. ACAB.

You might have no intention of causing trouble, but still get rounded up. Happened almost every day in my city for several months during BLM protests. Mass arrests of people in the wrong place at the wrong time. The countless live streamed videos don’t lie, each protest was non-violent until police agitated the crowd.

I don’t go looking for trouble but I have my limits just like anyone else.

I think it’s hilarious that people are still using DOS in 2024!

Sim City 2k was the first time I used Windows 95. One of the teachers in my sixth grade class had it on their computer, and they let us take turns playing it. It seemed really amazing to those of us who grew up with more primitive computers, like Apple IIs, even Macs, various x86 clones running DOS, or occasionally Windows 3.1.

My first PC in 1998 even had Sim City 2k “Network Edition” pre-installed. Played the shit outta that game!

All that shit is so real and it hurts so FUCKING bad. I hate being othered. I hate being the lone exception to inclusivity, diversity and tolerance. I have never once harmed so much as a hair on a woman’s (or man’s) head. But I’m dangerous and not trustworthy?! Fuck that noise.

  • Except suits. Call me crazy but I love women in suits. Formal attire looks so much better on them. I’m totally mixing a bit of shirts, ties, jackets and such into my everyday look, albeit feminine cuts.

Not as strange or pointless as it might seem at first glance, I’m reminded of this article from years ago comparing the experience of a modern phone with the old handsets: www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/…/401114/

And touching the cord, again, a way of feeling the connection with the other person, which in a world of wireless devices isn’t possible – there’s nothing there but empty space. It’s not just about twirling the cord.

This isn’t to suggest there are no benefits to smartphones, and others here suggest earbuds to improve call quality and ergonomics. But the fact is modern smartphones are designed to do many things OK-ish in compromise, but nothing so well as the other devices they replace (phones, TVs, calculators - remember those?, flashlights, keyboards, etc etc.)

Oh yes, my phone is nearly impossible to use as a camera, between the inherently awkward shape, the case, and the long processing delay. Does it work? Yes. But it’s not much fun. I love the ergonomic grip(s) of my DSLR and how every button and dial is in a natural position.

That’s another thing we miss, plain old tactile feedback of buttons, dials, sliders, switches.

Have you seen the price of boots these days? The percentage of websites that “just work” with privacy measures in place is depressingly small.

Tldr: I prefer to opt-in.

Technically it’s uBO, but I use the extreme setting that blocks all scripts by default. Truthfully I wasn’t aware just how many scripts get loaded especially on ecommerce and social media sites, there are too many heavy frameworks being used. Much of it is unnecessary bloat, slowing down my browser, and no small amount of it is devoted to tracking and data collection.

In general, I find less than half of loaded scripts are required to make a page functional. It’s a process requiring trial-and-error, but I have a good set of base rules in place for trusted sites and scripts.

For me, it’s about not giving websites free reign over my browser and by extension my computer and personal data, but having some measure of control over them.

And occasionally there are suspicious sites where I truly don’t want any scripts to run. I don’t even have to worry about them.

I don’t mind frameworks, but some features that seem super useful to devs, like google analytics, and various diagnostic/logging tools, social media integrations, I would prefer to “opt in” when I decide they are necessary.
