I overall liked the first two seasons of Discovery but Michael and Klingonman’s relationship took too much space. It was too much melodrama and I felt like they could’ve done something more productive.

Tilly was probably my favourite character, but there’s a bunch of interesting ones they could’ve developed further. Did Tilly’s mushroom friend ever return?

I’m also hella disappointed they killed Hugh only to bring him back, like that plot line wasn’t interesting at all. I’m dead tired of burying the gays.

What I think is interesting about the word flea market is that it’s a calque in pretty much all languages.

The Swedish word is “loppis”, which is a cutesy colloquial term for “loppmarknad.” Loppa, meaning flea, and marknad meaning market.
Flohmarkt in German also means lit. “flea market.”
Marche aux puces is French, where “puce” means flea, I think this might be the origin of the term.
Japanese has the casual term フリマ (fleama), short for フリーマーケット, which is just the English term “flea market”, there’s also the term 蚤の市, just meaning “market of fleas.”

I believe Portuguese calls it a “thieves’ market”, but Spanish, Italian, Russian, Turkish, Dutch, and Mandarin all use their own native words for “flea market”; mercado de pulgas, mercato delle pulci, Блошиный рынок, Bit Pazarı, Vlooienmarkt, 跳蚤市场.

For all of the concepts and such that are identical across cultures, few things have universal names. Typically they enter the language as loanwords as well (e.g. karaoke, from Japanese ‘空オケ’, hollow orchestra), so the term “flea market” stands out to me. I’m sure there are lots of other similar things I’m not aware of though.

Edit: It’s worth mentioning that other than Swedish (native), English, and Japanese, I don’t speak any of the other languages. I’ve asked a Russian-American friend about the Russian term, and a friend in Taiwan about the Mandarin term. Otherwise I’ve checked dictionaries and the like. Don’t take my word as fact, I’m not a linguist. It was just a pattern I found interesting, because the term itself is so particular. Any and all corrections are more than welcome.

I started talking to a dude from Brazil a couple of months ago, and was blown away just by how different Brazilian Portuguese is from Portuguese, even just phonetically. I should’ve probably mentioned that I really only speak English, Swedish, and Japanese, so any other examples are ones that I’ve dug up in lexicons and the like, so there may be terms that are direct translations but not actually used colloquially.

I can totally see different words being used between Brazilian Portuguese and Portugal-Portuguese.

This is true, I don’t know which word came first. I’d wager a guess that 蚤の市 predates フリーマーケット, but it’s really just a stab in the dark on the basis that English loanwords feel more modern, and it feels unlikely that a calque would be created after a loanword has been widely adopted.

Yeah I definitely get that. I also get why people don’t like Biden. He really oughtn’t be president, neither of them ought be candidates, but when the option is between him and Trump, going with Biden is a no-brainer. There’s lots of things we can’t isolate ourselves from. Natural disasters, for example. We see forest fires and floods on a yearly basis, and it’s getting worse. We’ll face droughts, and diminished crop yields. It’ll be particularly bad for all the areas near the equator (which are also incredibly populous and export a lot of food), and what will happen then?

Famine yes, probably, but likely also an exodus away from these areas, which I’m sure will go well as countries are known to welcome people seeking a better life with open arms. We’ll face humanitarian tragedies. I’d be surprised if there won’t be camps, and with that comes disease. Maybe we’ll even see another pandemic.

Aircon won’t shield us from that.

It even starts with the simple fact that people are simply not willing to get rid of their cars, even if public transport was good and completely free. So you’d be left with enforcing people not to drive, which is obviously also not going to happen for the same reasons.

Induced demand can work in reverse. Stop expanding roads. Redesignate some lanes to public transport only. Why take the car and sit in a queue for 2 hours when a bus can get you to work in 30 minutes without any queues?

We don’t know that. If it turns out that the actual ECS value is higher than predicted we’re already fucked because whatever faction we might take today should’ve already been taken decades ago. If a global humanitarian crisis is mere decades away, no changes we’ll feasibly make today or in the near future will stave it off.

You’d be surprised how many people would take that over a ride with other people.

An alternative is also that those who can, do their job remotely. Covid proved the feasibility of that. You couldn’t pay me enough to start commuting or doing my own grocery runs again. I only go outside for enjoyment and none of it involves vehicles. Unless said vehicle is a bicycle, because my dog really enjoys cycling.

What? As a complete outsider (I’m from Sweden, scouts isn’t a thing here) what does scouting have to do with religion? Why would they discriminate against atheists?

I thought scouting was about natural sciences, and helping out in the local community? Which to me sounds pretty nice!

Actually we do! I was corrected on this by @Droechai, and looking it up myself they’re actually quite prolific. Going by their website they exist in 220 out of the 290 municipalities here in Sweden. Honestly I’m surprised I’ve never heard of them before. They even have a folk high school.

Ooh. I suppose this is the answer I was looking for, though it still strikes me as rather strange. Was scouts established a very long time ago and did the religious bit just kind of cling on? Is there any type of push for making it secular? Because what little I knew, learning about natural sciences, and getting hands-on experience in various situations, as well as helping out the local communtiy just strikes me as a very positive thing. Squeezing in religion among all that just feels so out of place and foreign to me. It’s like one of those “find the odd one out” situations.

I love that they’re called Speider’n over there. I can see how that can be read as scouts, but in my head, “spejarna” sounds more like some sort of spy school organisation. I’m also baffled there’d be religious parts of it even in Norway. Wonder if the Swedish organisation has it too, their website at least highlights that they really value diversity, it’d be strange if they were anal about religion.

Even then, religion seems like such a strange and unrelated thing to chuck in there.

I believe we have Christian led organisations here in Sweden as well, but they don’t necessarily push religion as part of their operations. It really depends though. I recall an after-school thing being held at a local church when I was a kid. Other than it taking place in a church from the 1200s, there wasn’t really anything religious about it.

Are the girl scouts also religious? All I’ve ever really heard about the girl scouts is that they sell biscuits, but I assume they engage in the same activities?

I don’t know if you’re serious or not. Here’s the exact timestamp where it is discussed, and the source for the claim that humans make alright but unspectacular compost is Dr. Lynne Carpenter-Boggs of WSU.

It’s worth noting that Caitlin Doughty is a certified mortician, and the person she’s interviewing, Katrina Spade, is the driving force behind that particular human composting facility. They both, together with a slew of other people, have campaigned to make human composting legal in New York and California.

So it’s not some weird troll BS, these are professionals discussing their work, which at least for Katrina is human composting, and Caitlin, dead bodies in general.

The first video is a general discussion on human composting, as well as a bit of an interview of Katrina Spade, and a walkthrough of the process. The second video is a discussion/update on where human composting as an alternative way to dispose of bodies currently is in terms of legality in the U.S.

I shared the videos because Caitlin Doughty is a fun person, and the work she does is important and a lot of her videos are very interesting. I shared the videos because I thought that others might benefit also.

I’ve heard that MA is a pretty solid place overall. To be fair I loved my stay, but I think the main reason for that was meeting up with a very close friend of mine. I recall this crossing in particular leaving me rather exasperated.

It seems like they’ve since paved over it, however. It is a bit baffling to me that it looks the same in 2012 as it did to me in 2019.

This year in particular has been frustrating when it comes to snow. I live pretty far south, about two hours south of Stockholm, and we’ve had snow for like half of April. It all melted at the end of March, there were spring flowers, and then we had a shit tonne of snow again, which melted, followed by more snow. So many false starts. 😩

It’s been snow free for a week now, I hope it holds.
