I mean, when have you last seen someone use a CD? Exactly.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

You got me excited there for a minute! Though I don’t really want workarounds (they are the only way and therefore a necessity / automatically good, but they are not the real thing), I want virtual keyboards with actual native Wayland support, please :(

@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

Well it’s the training of LLMs that consumes so much energy, simply using them (for say software development purposes) (inference) probably takes less power than recompiling your Gentoo.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

The first part is at best controversial. The middle part is actually reasonable. And the last part is just ridiculously random and out-of-touch.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

Ur mum

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

Lol Lemmy socialists are so butthurt. Your statement is literally most reasonable and sane/rational, but lemmy.ml only knows cringey extremism.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

Okay, but who cares? Do you think that you’re entitled to a more important opinion because you are a moderator? Judging from the upvotes, enough people enjoy this meme and there is no need for you to spread such unnecessary negativity.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

That’s because you do not understand the philosophy. We are not using GNU/Linux because it is easier, we’re using them out of idealism. In my opinion, it is worth sacrificing some comfort for the thing you believe in. And ultimately, every GNU/Linux user also leads to an increase in freedom for all the others, even the Windows or OS X evangelists profit from the hard work and lobbyism of the Linux community and the Free Software Foundation.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not opposed at all to using LLMs for such purposes, however, please consider a solution that aligns with the values of GNU/Linux and the Free Software Movement. If you have sufficient RAM and a somewhat modern CPU, you can do inference on your very own machine, locally, with no connection to any external servers. And at very respectable speed.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

Caffeine is very unhealthy though :( Please, everyone, reduce your intake as much as possible

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

What exactly makes you think that? Strange New Worlds has very little action, and is loved by fans as far as I can tell. Yes, it has “personal drama”, but Star Trek always had that and it’s not a bad thing.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

If it were not true then that would be the actual surprise. The probability for life to form has been computed over and over during the past century, incorporating ever more gains in scientific knowledge, and it is on the order of 10^-100^, meaning that there likely is no other life in at least our galaxy.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

Because that’s a bad not even a solution.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

They themselves said “to which I count Hamas”, this is just bad faith rhetoric on your part.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

They said that they DIDN’T want to go back to Reddit. As in, they do not want Lemmy to turn into what Reddit is.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

Not true. The neurons of your central nervous system for example become fully differentiated during embryonic development, and then lose the ability to mitotically divide, which means that they stay for life. All your brain is doing after that is making synaptic connections between neurons.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

Now this is just plain racism toward Arabs. Your reasoning suggests that they are incapable of organising democratic forms of government, and that only enlightened Israelis are able to achieve that.

Reproducing a Microsoft corporate environment on Linux.

Most companies I’ve worked at where employees had a Microsoft work computers. They were under heavy control, even with admin privileges. I was wondering, for a corporate environment, how employees’Linux desktops could be kept under control in a similar way. What would be an open source or Linux based alternative to the...

The correct way to call bash scripts is through bash, e.g.

How do we know if there aren't a bunch of more undetected backdoors?

I have been thinking about self-hosting my personal photos on my linux server. After the recent backdoor was detected I’m more hesitant to do so especially because i’m no security expert and don’t have the time and knowledge to audit my server. All I’ve done so far is disabling password logins and changing the ssh port....

They are not produced for governments only, almost every consumer-grade CPU can have its ME disabled or at least scuttled, thanks to efforts like me_cleaner!

ricdeh,

Cringe af. Can you please stop with the constant violent rhetoric? This does not solve any problems and instead divides humanity. You will not create a better future by killing more people.

Ukraine packed a Cessna-style plane with explosives, added remote controls and kamikaze’d it into a Russian drone factory 600 miles away (www.forbes.com)

In a sharp escalation of its drone campaign targeting strategic industries deep inside Russia, Ukraine seems to have fitted Cessna-style light planes with remote controls, packed them with explosives and flown at least one of them more than 600 miles to strike a Russian factory in Yelabuga, 550 miles east of Moscow....

Wow, 400€ is good, I (or rather, my family) paid about 4000€, and that was even with passing every exam the first time and generally being a good student. But I’m from Germany, not Hungary. Still, that can surely not account for such a vast difference, can it?

KDE is buggy and has a tendency to crap the bed a few minutes after startup, which never happened to me with Gnome.

Then our experiences are vastly different. I have never encountered any bug or instability with KDE Plasma 5, and I have used it on a dozen or so devices. This is probably some driver problem specific to your machine.

Gameplay mechanics were also a lot better with more replayability. (lemmy.world)

Ignoring the lack of updates if the game is buggy, games back then were also more focused on quality and make gamers replay the game with unlockable features based on skills, not money. I can’t count the number of times I played Metal Gear Solid games over and over to unlock new features playing the hardest difficulty and with...

Hmmm, I don’t think that I can agree with the point about older games having fewer bugs. In my experience, 2000s 3D games are riddled with bugs to the point of becoming unplayable in many instances.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

True. I feel that particularly with ranked shooters like Valorant and their competitive modes, playing becomes less enjoyable and more of a chore. In RPGs and strategy games on the other hand, I can lose myself for hours in wonder and awe at the gameplay, story, atmosphere, setting, etc. That’s why I’d much rather play something many people would consider less exciting like Crusader Kings 3 than Valorant, Overwatch, Counterstrike, League of Legends, etc.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

I think you can probably still get them for some modern games that were crafted with passion, through special editions and box sets. I think that the standard store edition of Total War: Warhammer actually came with a manual as well as a novella, and this was coincidentally the last physical copy of a game I bought.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

I am in full agreement with this statement, and would like to add that I think that older games often have a much greater artistic value. They were concerned with crafting an intricate plot, super immersive environments, powerful and transformative music, memorable characters, etc. One game where in my opinion you really feel the volume of love and artistic expression as well as perfectionism put in is the first Risen, and it’s fairly obscure, but I find it to be so captivating that I’d easily play it with greater enthusiasm than any new Ubisoft copy-and-paste title or Valorant / Overwatch / CS:GO. Still, I think that this art / passion approach of quantifying a game’s “goodness” produces just as many contemporary candidates for great games, like The Witcher 3, Baldur’s Gate 3 or Red Dead Redemption 2. The things I like about old RPGs / adventure games are probably not specific to the past, but instead heavily developer dependent. Developers that love their work and are given enough time and money will produce great works of art in the same way that they have 20 years ago.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

This is restricted to a small part of modern gaming, though. In indie games, for example, you find none of these exploitative practices (talking in general, of course) and get wonderful, masterfully crafted works of art by people who do game development out of passion (also speaking in general, of course).

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

Oh man, while I was reading the first part of your comment I was thinking of the Witcher 3 DLCs the whole time, I’m so glad that you mentioned them at the end there!

ricdeh,

Well there’s always the option of outcompeting each other in signal intensity, but I guess that that’s not really possible in this case.

ricdeh,

That is whataboutism of the highest order. This has nothing to do with the 60s civil rights movement. You need to “hide in the shadows” because else law enforcement kicks in your door and takes you to prison, or at best you need to pay a massive fine. All this need for obscurity and secrecy does not, however, take away from software piracy being a moral and righteous thing to do in any way. Don’t let corporations feed you bullshit.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

VLC literally includes optional DRM circumvention that on most GNU/Linux distributions you need to deliberately install in order to play Blu-rays and DVDs. Thus, the use of illegal tools (illegal in the U.S. at least) is the only way you can play these physical digital media on Linux distributions without DRM software.

ricdeh,
@ricdeh@lemmy.world avatar

Install the proprietary NVIDIA drivers and set the nvidia-drm.modeset=1 and nvidia-drm.fbdev=1 kernel parameters via your bootloader command-line, then see what happens.

ricdeh,

That’s unlikely. What’s more likely is that you were not yet exposed to AI research and did not read through the academic reviews and articles of the time. AI is a serious topic in science and engineering since more than half a century.
