I’m still salty about the one time they accidentally offered a 80 % discount on Steam but fixed it to 20 % while I had it in my cart.

If I got a nickel for every popular zero-g game that quickly got shot down after release I would have two nickels. It’s not much but it’s weird it happened twice.

There was a VR sports game on Quest that was really popular where you threw discs at a goal. Forgot what it was called.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Yeah, that’s the one. Tons of people destroying their furniture while playing. And suddenly on the height of popularity it was shut down.

No matter what I play I always get pulled back to Diablo 2. Not even for the grind in the endgame. Just playing the normal game from Normal to Hell.

With newer games I always find myself overwhelmed with a screen full of indistinguishable enemies in later levels until I lose interest.

Unfortunately it has been proven that putting a stupid human face into the thumbnail makes your audience much bigger. It would be nice if YouTube had a “show stupid face” option.

No, a remaster is not the same. They can be hit or miss. Delisting a game is just another way of erasing history.

bjoern_tantau,

Diablo 2 is also a great example because while in general it is a very good remaster it lacks the LAN play of the original. Features were taken away.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Visually maybe but not gameplay wise. They are very much Metroidvanias (that genre isn’t called that by chance) where you collect gear to open up the maps more and more and shoot aliens on the way.

I really loved Prime 3 on the Wii. One of the few shooters that played well on there. I got the trilogy when that was ported but got stuck somewhere in the first game. Was too proud to look up a walkthrough.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Huh? I distinctly remember playing that game back then on my PC. Or at least the demo. Hated the controls. So it should be available in some form.

What shenanigans have you gotten up to in your play throughs?

I played an evil run on my second play through. In act 3 I randomly walked into a fireworks shop and it didn’t take long for me to realize what must be done. I managed to clear the building and scavenge every firework, loose or boxed, into my stash. After finishing up all my loose ends in act 3, I hauled as much as I could...

I wouldn’t hold my breath. From what I’ve heard so far the modding will be quite limited. There will probably still be a ton of mods outside of the official support.

Did you see the previous post about the release?

Wine is for running Windows software on Linux. Yeah, mostly used for games.

The previous post had an image of the burning World Trade Center.

Do you mean Electron apps? I didn’t even know you could force them to use Wayland.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Bad is relative. But I have some problems with scaling on a HiDPI display with some Electron apps. I think that might be solved if they were Wayland native.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

I got into the mood of some ARPG goodness with all the Path of Exile 2 news. Diablo 2 really was the only viable one for me. Even PoE 1 isn’t right for me either. It feels too claustrophobic.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Is this when the screen is locked or when you’re logged out? Those are two different things and I suspect it’s the latter. That’s probably sddm and I suspect it can be fixed by using Wayland with it. Should be some option in /etc/sddm.conf or so.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Uh, all that button does is write your configuration to the sddm config. Of course you can also do that manually.

Maybe use a graphical file manager?

Or move the folder to /tmp or so.

Thinkpad recs?

I like used Thinkpads. I bought a T430s off eBay and used it for several years. Recently I got a T570 from work. It had a screen issue, so I bought a new screen. That didn’t fix it so I bought a new mobo, but it has a loose drive connector so won’t boot. Just now I killed it for good by putting an nvme in a sata slot lol....

The nVidia GPUs on the Tx80 line suck. They throttle much too early and too aggressively bringing them down so much they can’t even handle Quake 3. And because they’re on the same heatpipe as the CPU that can happen very quickly.

I have never been able to properly use the GPU in my T580 although it should be able to at least handle Tomb Raider 2013 or Doom 2016.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Ironically fixing the CPU throttling makes the GPU problem worse. For a long time throttled didn’t support the 80’s and back then I could at least play Tomb Raider when playing off of battery.

bjoern_tantau,

Haven’t played Elden Ring, but I hate when games establish some way to play in the tutorial and when you watch some guides they first tell you to ignore what the game taught you.

Star Wars Squadrons was such an offender. Star Craft kind of is because singleplayer balancing is different from multiplayer. Can’t think of more now but I have a feeling like that’s the case with many games.

So, great that Elden Ring wants to tackle that. Ideally a game should teach you the ideal way to play.

Discussions in the past about not being able to access digital gaming content that users had paid for...

I have a recollection of some long threads about some companies discontinuing gaming content and members of Lemmy having strong feelings and evidence about all this. I have been trying to search these older threads up but I can’t find them. Does anyone remember these conversations? What companies were involved? Games? How much...

Long COVID left me in a state where I can’t handle too much physical or emotional stress. At least half a year ago or so playing 2016 was no problem for me. But Eternal was too much. Even on lower difficulty levels. But I actually liked Eternal. Especially later when you’ve got all the mechanics unlocked and can play through an arena on some kind of ultra instinct.

I fear that this new game will be similar in stress levels.

One of the worst things about the GPL and similar licenses is that they cannot be enforced by the user.

EA is also distributing a modified DOSBox but they only supply the unmodified source. Didn’t have the energy to pursue it.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Yeah, the gameplay looks awesome. But the story seems dumb. But then again Doom did come from a dungeons and dragons campaign.

In the end the gameplay has always been the more important part of the Doom games.

bjoern_tantau,
@bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de avatar

Doom 3 is good if you don’t regard it as a Doom game. It’s also an absolute blast in VR thanks to the slower running speed.

I mean, the swap file just has to be large enough to accommodate your system RAM. Everything in zram is already in system RAM, just compressed.

Of course with enough time he actually did start performing it live. Including restarting the above mentioned section if he messes it up.
