Feb 15 (Reuters) - The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission allowed Donald Trump’s media and technology company to merge with a blank-check acquisition vehicle in a deal that currently values the parent of his social media app Truth Social at as much as $10 billion.
So someone is essentially gifting Trump billions for a “merger”.
I think it could strengthen Biden’s chances. There’s nothing for Trump to really hit Biden with. All of Biden’s major fuck ups or unpopular stances are exacerbated under Trump.
Biden tried for a bipartisan immigration bill that Trump wouldn’t support. So nothing on immigration.
Biden is still funding Israel which Trump is all in on. So only vector there is that Biden doesn’t want obvious genocide, not a strong point.
Interest rates trending downward, so “economy” is toothless.
It would actually be good if Trump tried to attack him on anything like that.
Technically we need to stay in Daylight Savings Time. I.e. what we have now with more light in the evening. We just came from standard time: more light in the morning. We just need to stop changing now.
You can’t change business hours like that. It would require a lot more of a law to mandate anything of the sort.
I want more evening daylight so I can actually do things after I’m done with work. Changing to DST would make that easier. IDGAF about morning light. Others may want the opposite but I guess they are morning people.
Yes. You cannot get a law through Congress that saws all office businesses change their start times. There isn’t a law mandating that now, it’s just convention. The very idea you can make sweeping changes like that without major pushback is silly.
Yes. But in Summer you have MORE light all the time. You don’t have an issue with late sunrise and early sunset in the summer. You have that in winter. And my position is I’d like more sunlight in the evening rather than the morning. That’s it.
Although chronic effects of remaining in daylight saving time year-round have not been well studied, daylight saving time is less aligned with human circadian biology—which, due to the impacts of the delayed natural light/dark cycle on human activity, could result in circadian misalignment, which has been associated in some studies with increased cardiovascular disease risk, metabolic syndrome and other health risks.
Not a study. Just a recommendation. A position statement. There’s no evidence either way.
Yeah, I’m not even that far north but having sunset before 5pm locally is pretty bad. I’d personally rather have sunrise by 830 rather than 730. The time change just got us sunlight for any amount of time post 6pm.
Agreed. I’d prefer daylight time, but stopping the change is absolutely crucial. At the very least it’s just fucking annoying and serves little purpose anymore.
Trump has also stated he wants to be a dictator on day 1. This plus all of the other anti-democratic stances of the Republicans has me convinced that if Republicans win in 2024, there isn’t going to be another real election in the US. It’ll either be so corrupt, abbreviated or “managed” that it’s effectively Russia, or there will be an “emergency” that delays a national election indefinitely.
2nd amendment won’t matter unless a very specific thing happens: the entire government and executive branches, namely the military, collapses. It really depends on what the military does and enforces domestically. Whatever government the greater military props up wins and nothing individual citizens do can compete with that.
If everything collapses, famine will be the prime mover. And if you’re not part of a roving band of armed looters or an entrenched armed community, you’re screwed.
If Trump wins then the environment will probably move pretty far down the list of my worries. The top will be “how do I survive in a fascist dictatorship?”
Republicans will complain about literally anything to make anyone who opposes them look worse.
We should only listen to Republicans in order to decipher (it ain’t hard, they aren’t subtle) what new atrocities they are going to be attempting next.
Very cool how neoliberals and libertarians are being annoying weirdos and nonchalantly defending Joe Biden as he continues to support the Palestinian genocide
Very cool how accelerationist leftists deliberately misunderstand the points being made and paint those who disagree with them slightly as being pro-genocide.
Very cool and not bad faith at allllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll
Really? Because all I’ve seen on 196 are people making bad the faith argument seen in this very post.
but if Biden keeps supporting the Israeli genocide of Gaza then he’s going to lose regardless of whether or not people vote for him
This is where the disagreement comes in. This sentence implies that a very significant percentage of Democratic voters will either vote Trump or stay home if Biden doesn’t make a hard left turn against Israel’s actions. But that doesn’t seem to reflect reality.
Most American democratic voters are against the violence perpetuated against the Palestinians. And somehow, most Americans still support Israel. I don’t know how that makes sense either, but it’s true. There’s a LOT of americans very upset with what appears to be WH apathy about the genocide. But most Americans just don’t care that much about things that don’t affect them. They care way more about abortion rights, immigration, the “economy” and such and are more much likely to become apathetic about those than a genocide elsewhere.
I’ve yet to see anyone, and definitely not swaths of people, saying anything like what’s in the last panel.
The only time I’ve seen anything close is when people threaten to not vote or vote for Trump in the general election. But I DO see a lot of stuff like this complaining about it, more than the inverse. My uncharitable assumption is that people are getting comments that disagree with their takes and assuming it’s the entire community.
The US primaries and the general election are two different things. Voting uncommitted in the primary expresses support for the Palestinian plight and does not give Republicans any ground....
Enough people doing that would have the predictable result of getting Trump elected,
I agree with this and it’s what I’m afraid of. I totally support voting in the primary as you wish, even just to send a message (I support voting how you wish in all cases). But in this case using primary voting to send a dissatisfied message about the Democratic candidate has me worried it will instead send a wider message (or mass media will push this message) that the US populace feels Biden is unpopular compared to Trump.
Which is absolutely not the case with the vast majority of people voting against Biden in the primary. But that kind of message (accidental or intentional) can do real harm to prevent a literal fascist takeover in November. This is the totality of my concern and if we weren’t facing down the potential end of democracy in the US, I’d give a lot less shits about potentially torpedoing Biden’s chances. And I feel a lot of the hate against Biden has galvanized right around the time the primary season started which seems convenient for Trump.
People on here live in tiny bubbles thinking the better option is to primary Biden for some no-name person who has probably already conceded. As if the tiny American progressive vote can outnumber the incredible centrist bloc and mostly apathetic Americans who vote on surface-level politics and name recognition.
That’s not what that is. It’s 2 factors that combine into something very visible.
Children often follow in their parents footsteps career-wise. You can see it most obviously in politics and acting where names are important and they are highly visible. It carries on from age-old styles of hereditary work. You see parents do something as you grow up and if you try to do that you have built-in teaching and potentially a network to rely on. Bakers, scientists, actors, etc. It all works the same.
Name recognition. When you get the above, it becomes really easy to notice the same names. That can encourage followers to follow the name, assuming you’ll get similar things and quality. Look at Stephen King’s kid: while he’s good he gets attention simply because people think he will write as well as his dad. In politics you get that in spades where candidates live and die by their names and reputation. You see a Clinton, Kennedy, etc and remember the past and expect it. It takes a lot to break that expectation.
Giving people jobs they didn’t earn. Using people’s name recognition to suggest you might be good isn’t nepotism. Unless you think children should be disallowed from entering the same field or have to change their names? I think King’s kid tried that to distance himself and it didn’t work.
This reminds me of that bit in Asteroid City: selling tiny plots of dessert out of a vending machine that have no infrastructure.
Politis said more than 3,000 calls have come in from individuals and companies interested in the program. In addition to discounted land, buyers will also receive property tax relief.
The town has a settlement area of up to 1,500 eligible lots.
The goal is to have development companies build a majority amount of the housing needed to accommodate the town’s growth plans.
So for the low price of $15,000 a corporation can own a substantial part of a Canadian town. And the town wants a corporation to buy and develop housing. So they want to turn part of their town into rent-seeking corporate homes?
Also inaccurate. It’s Pokemon like creatures so only a few are humanoid. Most were animals or just weird. Also not sure what denomination of furry is weird alien like.
