People like Elon are part of why I refuse to bring anyone into this dumpster fire of a planet.

I really wanted to like ER. It’s fucking beautiful and seems to have a lot of depth, but the a appeal to difficulty doesn’t really hold any water, cuz the only thing that makes it difficult is unnecessarily clunky controls.

Maybe there’s a mod or something now that makes the combat more fluid… I should give it another visit.

Sterile_Technique,
@Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world avatar

It’s been a while, but I recall most attacks having an obnoxiously long animation, and that animation being set in stone once you trigger it. There is no aborting a sword-swing midway through to dodge or block. And if you make the mistake of pressing the attack button twice, apparently there’s a built-in ability queue that can’t be disabled, so you have to wait for the first animation to completely play through, then wait again for a second animation to play from start to finish.

It makes it extremely unresponsive. That unresponsiveness seems to be what most folks are talking about when they’re applauding the game’s “difficulty”… but you could make any game that flavor of difficult by obstructing the controls.

Sterile_Technique,
@Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world avatar

Which stats? I put over 100 hours into ER if that’s what you’re looking for. Like I said, I really wanted to like it, and ‘got gud’ (learned to time the control’s clunkiness) enough to progress a decent way through the game. But it never actually got fun, nor did it live up to the wildly positive feedback it was getting from the gaming community. ER is an okay game. 5/10. It’s not bad by any stretch, but it’s not the posterchild of a perfect game that it was/is lauded as.

I understand the reasoning behind it all, but those design decisions add up to it being clunky. Being intentional and with purpose doesn’t change that.

Sterile_Technique,
@Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world avatar

Making you commit to moves when you make them isn’t clunky.

What is it?

It’s cool if you don’t mind the clunk; apparently it’s a selling point… but that doesn’t mean it’s not there.

Sterile_Technique,
@Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world avatar

It’s standard practice.

In many cases, yes.

In fighting games, monster hunter, and a bunch of other games, really similar rules apply

…which makes those games clunky. I disliked monster hunter for the exact same reason.

Your take is uninformed and you obviously don’t play much of the genre

I don’t play much of the genre… because it’s clunky. I’m sorry that description offends you.

It works in the US, too. I’ve gotten great care at the VA (no, seriously… they have a bad reputation, and the infrastructure is ghetto as fuck, but the actual quality of care is great).

There’s also the USPHS, but honestly I’ve never actually met someone who joined or seen one of their facilities… I think they mostly do humanitarian stuff overseas?

Point being, we have the framework for it already. I could see the VA expanding it’s mission/coverage to spouses/families of vets, and use that as the baby step into coverage for everyone. Fun bonus: state law can suck a dick on federal facilities, so all the rednecks can write as much misogynistic legislation as they want locally, but Susie’s rights suddenly return the second she steps into federal property, even if it’s a hospital in the middle of Y’all Quaeda territory.

Sterile_Technique,

…why are you getting downvoted for looking up a word??

Sterile_Technique,
@Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world avatar

I have an extension recommendation if you’re using Firefox (and if not, I’m sure there are similar ones for other browsers):

addons.mozilla.org/en-US/…/dictionary-anyvhere/

Makes a little popup when you double click a word with its definition; and you can even double click a word in that for a followup definition when necessary.

I use it all the time - 10/10.

Depends on how they progress. Smart doesn’t necessarily mean good.

They all act like morons, but especially for the ones on top, it becomes a question of whether they came into power by being just the right type of stupid; or are they just good at behaving like an idiot because that’s an effective way to manipulate actual idiots?

We have a tendency to be dismissive of them as -just- being stupid, but every time we give them the village-idiot pass, we’re making their strategy that much more successful.

Look at the harm Trump has caused - he wouldn’t get away with a tenth of what he’s done if he acted competently.

…honestly it’s basically the Darth Jar Jar fan theory - you can get away with doing all kinds of evil if you just act like an idiot while you do it.

Sterile_Technique,
@Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not really worried about Trump specifically so much as the movement he’s unleashed. Cult 45 is going to lose their fucking minds when he finally dies… he could literally choke to death on Putin’s dick on live TV and it’d still be pitched as some kind of deep state hit job that merits retaliation. This shit doesn’t end with Trump.

Biden, Zelenskyy sign new 10-year security agreement (abcnews.go.com)

President Joe Biden touted on Thursday several new major U.S. commitments for Ukraine that were announced this week, including a https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/biden-zelenskyy-sign-us-ukraine-security-agreement-g7/story?id=111061390, sanctions to disrupt Russia’s war machine, and a sign-off from the G7 on a...

I can definitely understand the reasoning behind sending troops vs just supplies, and it’s kind of shit either way; but I’m with you, supporting them directly is ultimately the path to losing the least amount of human life.

Russia is running on fumes, but so is Ukraine. Even the threat of our involvement could end the war - continuing the attack on Ukraine would be suicide at that point.

Veteran here. Donald Trump fucking hates ‘the troops’. The number of active duty and prior service who still (or ever) support that anti-American shit stain blows my mind.

Here’s some light reading - this list is WAY outdated at this point, so feel free to contribute some more links in the comments. These are examples of things he’s done specifically to attack the US military / veterans:

Republicans are gonna have to square their “law and order” worldview with voting for a CONVICTED FELON.

That’s not how republicans work. The shit they do is always about the cruelty. The “law and order” shit was only ever to cheer on enforcement on people they don’t like (dark skinned people, women, non-christians, etc).

You’ll drive yourself nuts trying to do things like point out hypocrisy on their ‘law and order’ or any of their other paper-thin dogmas because they’re all made to be bullshit in the first place.

The cruelty is the point. Once you start considering their actions through that lens, they become much more consistent and predictable.

I’d recommend learning some of this guy’s and the LP’s highlights: you will NOT ever convince a trumpanzee to vote for anyone on the blue team, but they’re a lot more receptive to the libertarian pipe dream.

I’ve managed to direct a few votes away from Trump by singing the LP’s praises tactically to co-workers who were otherwise hopelessly right wing.

The spoiler effect is a best case scenario in that situation.

Sterile_Technique,
@Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world avatar

what are modern Republicans even about?

Cruelty. You can run circles around pretty much any issue pointing out examples of their hypocrisy and inconsistency, but they’re pretty reliable with harming their community.

Once you acknowledge that the cruelty is the point, their bullshit starts to make a lot more sense.

Sterile_Technique,
@Sterile_Technique@lemmy.world avatar

We need to stop giving Trump (and the other neonazis that have surfaced in his wake) the village-idiot or bat-shit-crazy pass and treat him as though his actions are lucid and calculated. We can assess the state of his brain during autopsy. Until then, he’s a traitor and domestic threat to the United States, and we should treat that threat as seriously as its consequences merit.
