Here’s what won’t change…my family has some property there in michoacan. Oh yes, the little house that saw us grow up into adolescence. But today our parents cannot do anything with it. Can’t sell it unless you give it away. The locals “those who remain” basically use scare tactics to get you to sell to the drug lords. One of my parents was tortured last time he went back to “arreglar papeles”. Now it’s becoming our land from inheritance, but how can I do anything? First off Americans can’t own land or not exactly. Second the torture thing, I like my testicles where they are. Third but most importantly is the representatives locally here at the Seattle place are the worst! It took a full year for me to get an approved power of attorney for some silly thing my dad wanted to do. How can that work? The only way is for us migrants to lose it all.

Raising awareness is critical. Just posting online helps. We’re already seeing a massive change in the narrative because more people are starting to wake up to the reality.

Many countries are starting to place arms embargoes and even sanctions on israel because their public opinion is shifting. The faster public opinion shifts the faster israel will be thrown aside as the pariah they are.

dubyakay,

Anecdotal, but I’ve spoken to Palestinians recently about how hopeless it feels. But they’ve responded that they’ve never seen so much awareness and support, not even in 2021. So this gives me some hope.

HurlingDurling, to technology in Chinese automaker BYD goes after Tesla’s throne with more than 300,000 electric cars sold in a month

This article doesn’t give any real context from where these numbers come from, what countries, or why are BYD cars more enticing over Tesla vehicles. Honestly, I’ve heard of the rising popularity of Chinese cars in developing countries due to their reduced cost, but the reason could be because the Chinese government has purchased them to boost sales numbers like shown in another article here.

sonori,
@sonori@beehaw.org avatar

But the government didn’t buy them to boost sales numbers in the other article here. If you actually read it it says that a bunch of ride sharing companies bought them, admittedly with some government subsidies, and then when several of thouse companies went out of business hundreds of their vehicles got stuck in a lot for a few years before they could be auctioned off. A wonder of capitalism that companies can be founded, grow, and then collapse so fast that they can’t even sell their hard assets sure, but hardly the government funding an entire industry.

throws_lemy,
@throws_lemy@lemmy.nz avatar

This article doesn’t give any real context from where these numbers come from

Probably from Bloomberg report

bloomberg.com/…/tesla-sales-drop-sees-byd-close-g…

Patch,

They started selling them in the UK this year, and I’ve already started to see them on the road. They claim to be on track for around 30,000 sales per year in the country, which would put them at about half of the number of Teslas sold (about 60,000).

Why are people buying them? Well, the same reason people buy any car. They’re sold with a relatively high trim for a relatively affordable price, and they’re reviewing well with the auto press. It’s not like there’s any magic to it. China’s a cheap manufacturing country, and they’re undoubtedly willing to throw profit margins to the wolves to boost market share.

iturnedintoanewt,
@iturnedintoanewt@lemm.ee avatar

Yeah specially watching serpentza’s video on BYD throwing literally fields of electric cars fully completed, with their license plates and under 30 miles on them, to just rot in there. So whenever hearing EV sales from Chinese car makers… Suspicious-fry.jpg

sonori,
@sonori@beehaw.org avatar

While there has been confirmed reports of smaller manufacturers faking the number of cars produced by claiming partly completed frames, why would BYD fully complete a car just to leave it in a field. No only is it leaving money on the table, but given the cost to build a car is far higher that the subsidy they’d be loosing money on every car.

I also sopose that serpentza confirmed that the cars were owned by BYD and completely unconnected to the fields of EVs left over when the Chinese ride share bobble collapsed and several EV ride share companies went bankrupt.

Carrolade, to world in Russia leaves thousands of planes without GPS in northern Europe

Imagine that kinda sucks for a pilot. A ship is at least moving fairly slowly, so you have time and plenty of space to do your charting the old fashioned way. Might even be kinda fun for the first few times, a chance to actually use that skill for once. A plane would have a tougher time of it, unless it has some inertial navigating system or something.

_edge,

unless it has some inertial navigating system or something.

Don’t all commercial planes have this?

Carrolade,

I am not a pilot or aviation watcher, so I don’t know. Makes sense.

Inductor,

They do, but compounding errors are always a problem with inertial navigation.

Instead of GPS, they can use fixed radio beacons like VOR and TACAN (which I think are both just US systems, but there are similar systems around the world and at major airports). This is basically the system that was in use before GPS.

EDIT: grammar

spirinolas,

I understood everything in your comment! All those years playing FSX instead of going to school finally paid off!

maynarkh,

VOR is international, my local airport has one. TACAN is military only (though some can be used as a VOR by civilian aircraft), also international, and by the way originally British as per Wikipedia.

darvocet,

There are other ways to navigate and fly other than gps and it’s basically just as easy to do. It’s just not quite as accurate and relies on stations on the ground which have been decommissioned over the years as gps has become more prevalent. VOR to VOR flying airways and then using ILS type approaches as an example.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Would air traffic controllers be able to guide them via radar?

darvocet,

They could but you wouldn’t want to do that for all planes. Planes follow standard departure and approach paths so the controllers know where everyone is and should be going. Moving a few planes around no biggie but if you’re doing radar vectors for everyone that will slow things down dramatically.

FlyingSquid,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That makes sense. I was thinking more about emergencies because it says outages are almost daily, which means not consistent.

_edge,

VOR

Thinking about it: This can also be manipulated by an enemy on the ground…

darvocet,

Well they are all radio signals even the ILS and localizers. In the US our 5G network interferes with radio altimeters. A person at home can spoof airplane traffic that would show up in cockpits. Bad actors could cause havoc anywhere.

ForgotAboutDre,

Lots of lighthouses don’t operate anymore. Ships crashing into thing in the night was a big problem before GPS.

There are other navigation methods, radio towers etc. But GPS is a reliable works everywhere system, outside of malicious actors.

Carrolade,

That’s a good point, we have very few active lighthouses in the US anymore.

    Refined sugar is generally not good, and certainly whole food sources of carbs are much more beneficial than simple sugars - however, sugar is not nearly as much of a demon as popular health influencers make it out to be. Importantly, it also needs to be kept in mind that the “standard american diet” (sad) or standard western diet is one that’s high in animal products, fat (particularly saturated fat), refined carbs; while being low in whole fruits, vegetables, and fiber and phytonutrients in general.

    Walter Kempers rice diet is worth learning about. It was a terrible diet - patients could basically only eat white rice, sugar, and fruit. But despite being an absurdly high sugar and high carb diet, a lot of patients saw dramatic improvements in their health, particularly when it came to things like obesity and type 2 diabetes reversal.

    Lol. The funny thing is they are kind of technically right. All refined sugars have some harmful effects like blood sugar spikes and inflammation, but corn syrup only has a slightly higher ratio of fructose to glucose as table sugar does. In small, irregular doses it’s fine to consume. And for athletes it can even be beneficial since refined carbs can replenish glycogen stores rapidly.

Effectively killing all work being performed in person between the countries. Any company found buying or selling any products from Russia would receive punishment by the country they reside in, voted on by a majority approval of the NATO countries without care which countries they are. (Aka Russia, U.S., UK, etc don’t get a bigger deciding opinion on fairness). This will put a 100% cut off of Russian oil as well. The purchase through intermediate states/countries being tracked and punished as well. This would unfortunately punish the people of Russia harshly but it would cause an immediate demand of independence from any oil coming from there and force NATO countries to focus on punishing companies for allowing support to persist. End result is a seclusion/segregation of independence. Apple, Nike, and hundreds of other major brands would lobby against it because it would chop access to the labor markets in China and India, but would increase demand of labor on places like Mexico where money will get fed in, and if we address the underlying drug issues by legalizing weed and a few other drugs and tax them locally we strip the money from the cartels and suddenly the Mexican government and South American countries get more support via job creation and money flowing. The border crisis slows to a minimum as inflation decreased and safety in people’s home countries increases. We create decent immigration policy encouraging people to come through the “front door” (doesn’t exist) but also making sure we boost population paying taxes while creating a further alliance and reliance that brings all of each other up.
